i totally understand!!!! my hair is a mix of 3a and 3b and it's REALLY thick and has a lot of volume...TOO MUCH VOLUME!!!! i also rarley wear my hair all the way down due to the excessive "poofiness". Something that helped A LOT with managing volume was to ask my stylist to thin out my hair a lot when i got a hair cut. most of the time it didn't really do much but when this one specific hair stylist did it it was really good! my hair felt a lot lighter and it was definetly less poofy. Sometimes though the poofiness can be caused by frizz and the curls not clumping together and splitting up instead. Both of these things can be improved with the CG method and a good leave in condish if that's the case.
hope this helps!

I used to think I could not wear my hair down, but now I wear it down pretty much every day. For me it was just figuring out a routine that works, and gaining some hair length so that it hangs a bit better.
Also, I think a lot of my hair hang-ups were in my head. I NEVER wore my hair down when it was curly, then one day, I forced myself to do it, and I got a ton of compliments. Now I am used to my curly hair, so I don't think twice about wearing it down.

I use to never make it a full day wearing my hair down.
Then after finding this NC site and reading and reading all the wealth of info that is here I found the routine that works for me.
1. Moisture is very important
2. Combing in shower w/wide toothed comb only w/condish drenched hair
3. No touching hair till dry
4. Finding products suited for my type hair
These got me started to feeling better about my hair and it looking better. The list goes onn and on.
I like my hair alot now and wear it down all day almost everyday.
The main product that worked for my frizz was Curl Keeper I love it and never go without it!!!

I can totally relate...I never EVER wore my hair down before I started the cg method. It was always in a pony tail or pinned back. Now that I'm a few months into cg, I wear my hair down just about every day. It took a while, but eventually it tamed the poof and extra volume that I always hated.

I used to have to wear my hair up June thru mid-Sept, due to its sheer volume/mass and weather related frizz/expansion.
Then I went CG and all that changed.

i probably shouldnt wear my hair down... since it rarely looks good. lol. but i dont really care. my hair looks good JUST the 1st day i wear it curly. i just have way too much hair for it to look good all the time! even after being CG.
my hair is extremely healthy, so i'm ok with it. i set up unrealistic goals with my hair. so instead of trying so hard to make it look a certain way, i've learned to just be happy that my hair is healthier. and while i was anti poof most of my life, i kinda like the poofness

+1 Moisture is the most important thing as it will provide some weight to your hair to tame it down. I used to do this on purpose to weigh my hair down and now that I'm so used to it, I actually like it to be a bit bigger and have more volume. Like others have said, some of it is in your own head. You'll get there - have faith

Growing out your hair can make it easier to wear down. I couldn't wear it out two years ago, but now that I've gained a few inches, it hangs better. Currently, it's about 3-4 inches past my shoulders.
I totally relate to the "poof" problem... I live near the beach, and dryness is an issue. However, a loose partial updo can work wonders.
1. Take two strands (about an inch wide) from the front of your hair, one from the left side of your head, one from the right side.
2. Tie them back with a very thin scrunchie, one that doesn't have a metal bit built into it (not the ruffly 80s variety, but the kind that fades into your hair.) Tie the hair into a bun-like loop that hangs loosey--- and hangs low. The loop will hide the ends, which tend to frizz easiest (they often lack moisture.)
3. Important: Your "looped" hair should hang loosely, because if you tighten it with several loops, your hair will poof and frizz. The loop should hang down, not stand up.
I touch mine up with a spritz of water here and there, mostly on the ends. Partial updos can look a bit goody-goody, so you can either contrast them with snarky message t's and bold jewelry (I like chandelier earrings and chunky bracelets), or play the "goody-ness" up with heart necklaces, sundresses, v-neck sweaters over lacy tanktops, etc.
What it should look like:
