Default How long after surgery

is an incision healed enough to sit in a hot tub? Hubby had abdominal surgery 17 days ago. Staples were removed 9 days ago and his butterfly bandages haven't fallen off yet.

Anyone know?

TIA!

I've always been super careful. I'd wait till the Steri-Strips come off by themselves. It really is worth it. Can't even tell where I was cut
btw...how big is the incision?
I'd wait 6 weeks.....

Ahh, ok. He was hoping he could go out there this weekend but that's probably not going to happen. His incision is about 8"-- about 1.5" above his belly button to about 6" below. It's pretty rugged where it goes around his belly button.

Lotsa fun in the hot tub later, right?

If it's your own hottub, I'd think 17 days was long enough. You know the cleanliness of your own water. If it's a public hottub, I'd wait a full 8 weeks.

when you are sure you are closed and the skin is strong enough you are fine to do anything.

It will tell you are not ready if you feel it burn along the healing. More time is needed since underneath is not ready for the heat..

Its not an activity where you would pull the scar open or stretch the scar. You just want to be careful the skin is strong enough to handle the soak.

I'd wait till Doc says its ok.
Sitting in the HT can made the incision become maserated. Ya know how your hands & feet look if you swim a long time all wrinkly & stuff. He can get it wet now in the shower but just lightly pat it dry with a towel do not rub or cause any friction.
Waiting 4-6 wks is the norm.

Okay, he will wait until Monday and call the doctor to see what he says. It is our own tub and we're meticulous about keeping the water clean but I'd hate for anything bad to happen.

Thanks, everyone!
