Default (Rant)Mom asked why my hair looked lie an afro...

So thursday I cut my relaxed ends of that were hanging to my shoulders so now my hair it to my earlobes. I did not tell my mother I put in spiral curls and its time to do them again. She sees my hair today and ask why it looked like an afro. Sigh...... I did not even tell her that I cut it off. I did tell her later on that it would be a year since I got a relaxer did not get much of a response from her. I am trying not to get defensive and upset that she still isn't on board by now and realize I am not going to put a relaxer in it but d@#!! My sister is going natural too but she has been doing sew-ins and braids and has not really shown her hair since she started.

Afro's are BEAUTIFUL! So, while she may have meant it in a not so great way, just take it as a compliment. With you & your sister both going natural, I am sure she will come around sooner or later. Good luck....

Default Your mom

Perhaps your mother doesn't realize the beauty of natural curls.

I'm sure in your research online have visited many internet sites with pics of beautiful people sporting their natural curls. You could let your mom into what you've seen and learned.

Get a screen saver with a beautiful natural head.

Go to meetings with natural heads take pics and show her or just invite her.

Check out youtube.

Send different blog links to your Mom's email.

Etc etc etc Be creative

I think it's most important to be open with her.

I agree afro's are lovely. I remember when I was newly natural my mum was dead against it always asking me when am I going to get a relaxer. I think she started supporting my hair decision more when she saw that I was serious about remaining natural and now compliments me and my bush regularly

I would be a little confused. Natural hair is supposed to look like an afro. Not always a piked out fro but a fro nonethe less. Why does she think that's a problem?

My mom is well my mom. The generation gap. I said in another post that when I look at my mom's pics from back in the day her hair was straight or curly and she never did the fro when they were extremely popular. However my dad is all for it!!! He had a an afro back in the day and everything. I am just going to give her time to adjust. My sister came over today and cut some more of my relaxed ends off and the way we were bickering she should know now that I cut something!!!!

I don't have any family support in my decision to go natural so I understand how you feel. The key for me is my own personal acceptance. I KNOW I am F-I-E-R-C-E with my TWA and while my confidence has not won my family over to the side of natural beauty, it definitely stopped alot of the comments (at least to my face anyway, lol). Hang in there, it'll get better once the novelty has worn off.
