Default Where do you buy your shea butter?

Or any butters?
In the past I have ordered my shea butter from OilsByNature.com. I am very disappointed in the quality that I recieved and I would not like to purchase from them again. I was wondering where anyone else buys their shea butter or cocoa butter or any butters from.
I just placed an order from Garden State Naturals for their cupuacu and tucuma butter so I can't comment on their quality just yet- but I sure hope its good.

I buy my butters from Texas Natural Supply. I'm glad I decided not to order from oilsbynature. This is the second time I've heard about the bad quality of their products. I was discussing to someone one day that I wish I would've ordered from them cause they were cheaper. That person told me they're probably cheaper cause of the quality of the product. That's something I never thought about. So I'm glad I did pay more and ordered from Texas Naturals.

Thumbs up

I'm starting to get into this shea butter stuff and I started ordering from Hosiaonline, it's affordable but the quality is good. I buy the one that comes in the jars, because the butter is smooth and creamy, i think it's whipped that way, but I can vouch for it, I love it. It's easier for me to apply to my skin too. I'm not as savy as you guys, so I wouldn't know what to do with those chunks of shea butter. That's their site http://www.hosiaonline.com

You should probably get the natural shea butter balm next time. The butter is easier to work with but it's mostly water and emollients so you don't get all of shea butter's awesome benefits.

I mean all 100% natural, unrefined shea butter. I volunteer for a nonprofit that sells fair trade shea butter products. Ours is $20/can, because we pay the African women who produce it above market rate ($2/kilogram as opposed to $.10-$.20/kilogram) and because the quality is just that high. As soon as we're able to, we're going to be sending half the profits back to them, too. Watch this documentary for more info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4sbvY8BNT0

On nappturality I was reading a post by a lady that said she ordered shea butter from Oilsbynature and she had her sister test it, because she's a chemist. Her sister found that the shea butter was mixed with some petroleum or mineral oil. If I had read that before I bought my 5 pound bag I would never have ordered from OBN in the first place.

Not that I've seen. Body butters/lotions, sure, but not the 100% shea butter (no additives, fragrances, etc.).

I've purchased mine from Oils by nature as well, but have been happy with the quality. Which did you get, as they have the refined variety and then the two unrefined(from two different sources)? Maybe you got a bad batch?

Oh I see. Their shea butter is good, it's natural and unrefined with nothing added and I can tell because it has helped greatly with my keratosis. My friend who is from Ghana and freaking luv shea butter buys it from there and recommended it. Thanks for the video!

That should be brought to their attention. Why advertise as unrefined if that's not the case? maybe they don't know they are selling such shea butter. Maybe their vendor is shorting them. If I was you I would send them an email about it or ask for a refund. That's just wrong, you pay for one thing and you get another.

i love oilsbynature for their oils. i prefer to buy gallons of my fave oils rather than pay out the arse for 8oz/16oz bottles. i wasn't too happy with their shea butter (shea unrefined ivory) at first but now that i know how to work with it (melting, fast cooling) it is better. if i use this shea butter straight there are absolutely no problems. if i use this shea butter as part of my shealoe formulation, i have to melt, fast cool for best results. if i use this shea butter as an addition to my conditioner, i don't have problems.

i don't have to jump thru any hoops with this shea butter supplier http://agbangakarite.com/whole_bulksheabutter.php but they were out of stock when i went to replenish my stash.

i've been using oilsbynature for years and i never heard this. i read that post on nappturality too and i think it was several years old. who knows... maybe it was brought to her attention and fixed. OBN is a very reputable supplier.

I love the oils as well, and I only use the unrefined shea(biege) straight. Unless I whip it with sweet almond or virgin coconut.

I agree that if their supplier had/has been shorting them, the information (the chemist's results) should be forwarded to them. But maybe it has been brought to their attention, as you said that post was many years ago. They guarantee their products, so I'm sure they would have remedied the situation.

I've wanted to buy from http://agbangakarite.com/whole_bulksheabutter.php. That was my first choice, but when I wanted a lb sample, they were out, so I just went to Oils by Nature since I had purchased butters and oils from them in the past.

I've seen it at the beauty supply store but it's refined. The african shops on the corner also sell it but it costs more for a smaller container so I just pay for shipping and get a whole pound.
Online I get it from medina. (There is a 20 minimum order but they have natural soaps and stuff too. My whoe family uses it for our skin and hair every day so I ordered 4 lbs.) I have gotten some stuff from camdengrey too.

About that nappturality post, I read it recently but I guess I didn't pay attention to the date. Regardless, I didn't like the quality of the shea butter I got. I ordered unrefined ivory. I thought it was like the nilotica (sp?) but as I got more into the natural product scene I realized it really wasnt. I'm no expert on shea butter by any means, I would just prefer to purchase from somewhere else. Maybe I did get a bad batch.

Nitolica (Vitellaria nilotica)is a totally different type of butter than shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii). Not of the same genus, and is MUCH better quality than shea and offers more nutritive value and benefits. So if you're accustomed to that, then shea butter will definitely be a disappointment. LOL! And it's much more expensive.

Sorry you weren't happy with what you received, though. That always sucks.
