Default Initiative to ban divorce in Calif. in 2010

From True/Slant:

Quote:
The backer of a proposed initiative that would ban California couples from getting divorces has been OK’d to start collecting signatures.

If 694,354 registered voters sign in favor of putting the constitutional amendment on the ballot by March 22, 2010, it will be up for a vote next November. The measure “Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the ability of married couples to get divorced in California” but maintains “the ability of married couples to seek an annulment.”
I really hope it makes it onto the ballot. It will really show all of those as*holes in California how it feels to have your own civil rights sacrificed to public opinion.

I have to sign up.

If I can't marry in my state for worries in ruining the sanctity of their marriages, I say no divorce! Make all the miserable couples stay miserable! It's what they wanted anyways when they married right?!

But in reality I'm against it. Damn Christians think what they believe goes and I'm not down with that.

It's a sarcastic a fortiori argument. They don't really want to ban divorce. They're saying that if people who are against gay marriage really want to protect the sanctity of (Christian) marriage, then those same people will vote in favor of this.

Ah, I see - thanks for explaining. Sorry, not used to seeing crazy political movements not be serious (though sometimes that in itself is kinda scary). Then I take back calling them crazies.

Wow. When I read the thread title I thought, "Jeez, these religious nutters won't stop trying to control other people, will they?!"

But since it's meant to drive home a point I kinda hope it passes.

Ha! That's great. Think of all the Hollywood marriages that last a couple weeks or months, too. I love the point they're making with this, although I am guessing that people that are against gay marriage will not find it quite so amusing.

Not all Christians are like that. I am all for gay marriage and I'm Christian. I'm all for reproductive rights and for the rights of a woman to choose and I'm Christian. I'm anti-death penalty and I'm Christian.

I'm a liberal Democrat and I'm Christian.

I understand your frustration because believe me when I tell you I feel it too, but not every single Christian is a crazy right winger.

I know PH. There are christians out there that wouldn't take my civil rights.

I'm just frustrated.

I think the idea behind this is fantastic, but I firmly believe that you should never underestimate just how stupid people are. There will be plenty of people who are in on the joke who will vote for this because of the symbolic gesture, because they'll believe that there's no way there will be enough votes for it anyway. But then there will be those who truly think banning divorce is a good idea and will vote to do just that. I think it's definitely possible for this thing to get enough votes, which would be hilarious for all sorts of reason, but, yeah, not a good thing.

Haha, my Californian boyfriend expressed the same concern. It's funny, most of my east coast friends reacted to this news with amusement, but he was just dismayed and kind of PO'd.

In theory, I think this is hysterical. In practice though? I think it's really stupid. Trying to get a point across in this way is just not worth it IMO. How many of the hypocrites are going to get it, anyway? It seems rather childish to me, like some kind of inside joke gone too far.
