CG products to blow-dry straight
I'm a modified CG'er, who likes to blow dry my hair straight some of time. I've been in search of a CG blow-dry cream that will do a nice job, without unnecessary chemicals, using either low or medium heat on my dryer, and which I don't need to follow with a flat-iron (too much potential damage). By "CG" I mean that it will wash out easily with low poo.
So far, I've found three CG products that all work well for this purpose (at least in low to moderate dew points; blow drying hair straight in high humidity is something I rarely attempt). My hair is relatively easy to straighten (2B/3A, with medium texture), so keep that in mind if you have a different hair type.
1. Marie Dean Yogurt Smoothy Cream
I love MD products for enhancing waves/curls, but this particular one seems to elongate curls instead (at least on my hair), so I decided to try it as a straightening cream. Works great! Be careful not to use too much, because it's a heavy product and a little goes a long way. If you overdo it, hair will end up a little greasy. I've also used it successfully as a finishing product to smooth down my ends (or other flyways) on 2nd and 3rd day hair, after having blow dried with a lighter product. NOTE: MD products are heavily scented, so order lightly scented or unscented if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.
MD yogurt smoothy cream ingredients:
Herbal blend [distilled water infused with aloe vera and lemon verbena hydrosol], kokum butter, illipe butter, apricot kernel oil, raspberry seed oil, behentrimonium methosulfate and cetearyl alcohol (conditioning emulsifier), sodium lactate (natural humectant and moisturizer), mango butter, vitamin B5, C12-15 alkyl benzoate (emollient), organic soy lecithin (organic emollient and moisturizer), natural yogurt, coconut cream oil, organic jojoba oil, slippery elm extract, marshmallow root extract, natural oats, phenoxyethanol and caprylyl glycol (paraben-free preservative), peach kernel oil, fragrance, strawberry seed oil, vitamin E, plantago extract, nettle extract, white peony tea extract, xanthan gum (natural sugar derived thickener), rosemary oil extract
2. Curl Junkie Coffee Coco Curl Creme lite (a.k.a.. CJ CCCC lite)
This is more lightweight than the MD smoothy cream, so it takes a bit more elbow grease with the hair dryer, but finished hair is softer/lighter (doesn't look producty at all). CCCC lite is a very versatile product; I also use it on curly days with a medium- to hard-hold gel on top.
CJ CCCC lite ingredients: Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Camellia Sinesis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Panthenol, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, PVP/VA Copolymer, Glyceryl Stearate, Propylene Glycol, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Gardenia Tahitensis Extract, Mangifera indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, PEG-100 Stearate, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Silk Amino Acids, PPG-5 Ceteth-20, Cetrimonium Chloride, Butylene Glycol, Polyquaternium-7, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Algae Extract, Hydroethylcellulose, Polyquaternium-10, Lactobacillus/Wasabia Japonica Root Ferment Extract, PEG-8 Dimethicone*, PEG-8 Raspberriate, Agave Nectar Extract, (Vegetable) Glycerin, Sodium Chloride, Tocopheryl Acetate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Fragrance. *Water soluble-rinses clean!
3. Dr. Bronner's Style Cream, Peppermint
This is heavier than the CCCC lite, but lighter than the MD yogurt smoothy cream. I used 3 pumps for my (almost) BSL hair and it looked nice but the roots came out a bit greasy. Next time I'll use 2 pumps instead. The only drawback is the scent - when I first applied it to wet hair, I immediately smelled cigarette smoke (a scent that always makes me feel nauseous). Turned out the smell was coming from my hair! I looked at the ingredients and noticed hemp seed oil, and determined that this must be the cause. Luckily, once my hair was totally dry the smoky smell disappeared entirely. I probably won't re-purchase because of this issue, but the cream works well aside from that. I haven't tried the lavender-scented option, so not I'm sure if the lavender covers the hemp smell more than the peppermint does.
Dr. Bronner's style cream ingredients: Water, Peppermint Oil (organic), Ethanol (denatures with Organic Lavender Oil), Jojoba Oil (organic), Hemp Oil (organic), Quilaja Saponaria Bark Extract (organic), Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E)
Has anyone else used one of these products for this purpose? Any other favorite CG blow-dry-straight creams?
