Dryer and protectant

If I am sitting under a standing hood dryer, should i spritz heat protectant over my hair first? Or is that only if i am blow drying with a hand held dryer???

If you keep the heat on low I don't see the need for a protectant, though I don't see the need for one with a handheld dryer either (assuming it has a diffuser).
