I haven't tried to blowdry without a brush or to scrunch. I just flip my head upside down and blowdry with a paddle brush. It comes out mostly straight with a slight wave and a lot of volume. I use a flatiron afterwards on the parts that have a wave.

SoLastSunday: what happens if you let it dry without blowdrying at all?

petitfox: i called the BKT distributor a few months ago to find out if there were any salons offering it near me and they suggested going to my usual salon and talking to them about it. many salons don't know about it yet and might be interested if they knew. they also said that i might be able to convince them to use me as a guinea pig - and so might get it for free or at a reduced rate the first time. i haven't done this yet, but thought i'd mention it to you in case you wanted to.

Ladies, you might want to read the October issue of Allure (with Kiera Knightley on the cover). They analyzed the chemical used in Brazilian straightening and found that it has a high level of formaldehyde -- considerably higher than the level that OSHA considers safe.

I haven't read the article but I did here somewhere...maybe here...that you can get it with or without formaldehyde....it is a carcinogen and that is a big concern of mine.

oh no. Carcinogen. why? WHY????????

max: thanks, I tried doing that. er, it's harder than I thought to convince these german stylists! One of them tried to convice me that he was doing a BKT but he was doing a TR!! I know, because I had 2 TRs done in the past! Ugh.
The others were not interested. I want to go on trying but I'm not sure anymore since it's carcinogenous.

I read the article Suzen mentioned and I think it's INSANE for anyone to put that stuff on their head, one woman suffocated while taking a hot shower when the fumes were released into the air. Some price for beauty!

To those here that already did this, I highly recommend that you do a whole body cleanse/detox so you don't develop cancer a few years from now, NO joke!

I used to work for a firm that dealt solely with funeral homes and (as many of you may know) formaldehyde is used in the embalming process. To me, putting something on your hair that's used to preserve dead bodies just seems sick and wrong.

I am really interested in reading that article... would someone have a second to send it to me (scan?) I'm in Europe at the moment...
I was really considering having this done, but now, I am rather scared since I hear about these new facts.

Amandacurls- From your perspective, I can totally understand your opinion! Yes, it is quite an extreme mesure to go to achieve "beauty"... Actually from the perspective of health too.

Default Only 2% Formaldehyde

From what I understand its only 2% Formaldehyde. Some places that are not selling the authentic stuff like on Ebay has over 25% Formaldehyde in there products. You really have to ask how much is in there products. They say that 2% is not going to do any damage and its used to seal the keratin and thats all thats needed. On one site I read that formaldehyde is regulated in the cosmetics industry and on another site I read it isn't. So I don't know which one is true. I know that doesn't make the fact that its in there any better but they claim it doesn't damage the hair.

OSHA considers anything above 0.75 ppm to be hazardous. The Allure article measured various BK solutions as 3 to about 7 ppm. (I don't have the article in front of me, so that's my recollection).

Here's a description of the health hazards.

Formaldehyde is a sensitizing agent that can
cause an immune system response upon initial
exposure. It is also a suspected human
carcinogen that is linked to nasal cancer and lung
cancer. Acute exposure is highly irritating to the
eyes, nose, and throat and can make you cough
and wheeze. Subsequent exposure may cause
severe allergic reactions of the skin, eyes, and
respiratory tract. Ingestion of formaldehyde can
be fatal, and long-term exposure to low levels in
the air or on the skin can cause asthma-like
respiratory problems and skin irritation such as
dermatitis and itching. Concentrations of 100 ppm
are immediately dangerous to health or life.

Funny enough, I was reading the article when I found this thread. Here's the excerpt about the woman who died (I would've typed more but it's late and I'm tired):

Then, in March of this year, a 33-year-old housewife in Brazil died after using escova progressiva, which she applied herself and left on her hair for four days, the amount of time salons recommend. Anvisa, Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency, wasn't able to find a link, but it was a theory at one time that the treatment may have caused her death. "She was an otherwise healthy woman," says Vanessa Amaral, Anvisa's press secretary. "What we thought possibly happened was that after doing the treatment, she was in the bathroom taking a shower, and the heat caused the fumes to release. And she asphyxiated herself, and it led to a heart attack. She died in the shower.

The article didn't mention the percentage of formaldehyde in the formula that the woman used.

Have other people experienced anything similar to this reaction after having the treatment, like difficulty breathing in the shower? I'm curious as I can't tell if this is an extreme isolated incident or not, because I haven't been able to find that much information about anything other than the process itself, and the condition of the hair after it's done.

There are many chemicals that are used in products that people put on their skin that are carcinogenic. The biggest issue in the article, from my interpretation, seemed to be with the percentage in the formulas with the biggest risk being the inhalation of the fumes since it really shouldn't be touching the skin. The article noted that stylists were probably more at risk thank clients due to more potential exposure, but again it depends on the percentage of formaldehyde used in the solution. I'm sure that the chemicals in other relaxers can be just as dangerous if used in larger doses.

From my perspective, the problem is that the formulas are not being monitored by anyone or any back-up system and they are from a foreign country which may have more relaxed laws about these types of things or less severe penalties for companies that do break the law.

I briefly toyed with the idea of getting this done until I read the article. I am not one to typically believe every word I read and work in a field that causes me to not take anything I read (especially in a fashion/beauty magazine) with a grain of salt, but this article reminded me that this is a new treatment (new to the US anyway) and I don't want to be any test model on anything like that.

If anyone does decide to get this process, I would hope they would do their research and make sure that it is done in a well ventilated area and also ask questions of the stylist about the formula, where they got it, the percentage of formaldehyde, etc.

Default BKT

Actually, I just recently came back from vacation in Brazil. I hadn't seen my family in almost 6 years, and my cousin's wife does this treatment. Her hair looks amazing!!! She's done it on her 12-year old daughter, as well. And my little cousins have some VERY curly hair! One of them has 3c, and I saw pics of when she had it done. SO nice! I almost did the treatment while I was there, but had just started trying CG products. Now that I see it again....I may do it. Just because here in Houston it's getting to be winter, and I hate having to wear my hair curly outside.

ANYwho ~ this message was just for an FYI on this BKT treatment...that i have seen it firsthand, and it is amazing. And the hair is so shiny, too!

I RECENTLY HAD BKT DONE AND I WAS WONDERING IF MY RESULTS ARE HOW THEY'RE SUPPOSD TO BE OR IF THE LADY MESSED SOMETHING UP. I HAVE VERY CURLY/FRIZZY HAIR NATURALLY. AFTER THE TREATMENT, MY HAIR IS NOT STRAIGHT BUT NOT AS POOFY AS IT USED TO BE. ITS PRETTY MUCH PERFECT IN THE SENSE THAT ITS NOT FRIZZY ANYMORE BUT AS FAR AS CURLY, ITS STILL PRETTY CURLY BUT NOT AS MUCH. THE LADY SAID THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE WAVY THE FIRST TIME I GOT IT DONE AND THAT WOULD GRADUALLY GET STRAIGHTER EACH TIME BUT I REALLY WASNT EXPECTING IT TO BE AS WAVY AS IT IS. BESIDES THAT IM REALLY HAPPY I GOT IT DONE. I CAN NOW WASH MY HAIR AND LET IT DRY NATURALLY AND EVEN LEAVE IT JUST LIKE THAT IF IM IN A RUSH BC ITS NOT A TOTAL FRIZZY MESS. ITS ACTUALLY PRETTY FLAT (COMPARED TO WHAT IT USED TO BE). WHEN I DO IRON IT, ITSTEAD OF TAKING 45 MINS AND HAVING TO DO A LITTLE SECTION AT A TIME, IT TAKES NO MORE THAN 10 MINS TO GET IT STRAIGHT. THATS LETTING IT AIRDRY AND GOING OVER IT WITH THE IRON. ANYONE THAT IS INTERESTED IN GETTING IT DONE THAT HAS ANY QUESTIONS, FEEL FREE TO ASK. BUT IF ANYONE HAD THIS DONE AND HAD DIFFERENT RESULTS AND THINKS THAT MY LADY REALLY DID SOMETHING WRONG, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BC ITS NOT TOO LATE FOR ME TO GO BACK TO HER AND HAVE HER MAKE IT RIGHT. THANKS EVERYONE FOR LISTENING AND HOPEFULLY I CAN GET SOME ANSWERS FROM THIS FORUM.

Default Brazilian Treament in Florida

Hi everyone! I am so tired of researching the Brazilian Keratin treatment. I live in Sarasota, FL but am willing to travel anywhere in Florida. I know most salons offering the BKT are on the east coast, in the Boca area which is perfect since I have a friend in Pompano.
I would love the name of a salon, experiences, results, prices, anything and everything
(my personal email is tinap143@aol.com)
Thank you so so so much!

Hi! I'm new here! I've been lurking a bit. I saw this system featured on the Early Show last week.

[On one site I read that formaldehyde is regulated in the cosmetics industry and on another site I read it isn't. So I don't know which one is true. ]

The woman being interviewed was a doctor. Not all chemicals in beauty products are regulated. Guidelines are set forth and companies are encouraged to follow the guidelines but they are not regulated. The woman said that this system has over 100 times the level of formeldyhyde thought to be safe.
If you go to the "early show" website and search for hair treatment or dangerous hair treatment you'll be able to find the video of the interview.
