IT SOUNDS LIKE A TOTAL RIP OFF. I DONT KNOW HOW LONG YOUR HAIR IS, BUT IT DEF SHOULDNT TAKE FIVE HOURS. MY HAIR IS LIKE THREE INCHES BELOW MY SHOULDERS AND IT WAS AN HOUR AND A HALF OR MAYBE A LITTLE LESS. YOU SHOULD DEF GO SOMEPLACE THAT GIVES YOU A SET PRICE. MAYBE WHERE YOU LIVE ITS NOT THAT POPULAR SO WHOEVER DOES IT IS GOING TO CHARGE A LOT BECAUSE THEY CAN. IT'S VERY POPULAR WHERE I AM SO DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU GO, YOUCAN DEFINETLY FIND A DEAL. NOW AFTER WASHING MY HAIR A FEW TIMES AND TRYING DIFFERENT WAYS OF DOING IT, I FOUND OUT THE BEST WAY AND I JUST LOVEEE IT. I WOULD DEFINETLY RECOMMEND GETTING IT BUT I WOULD DEFINETLY NOT SPEND ANYWHERE NEAR $300. I HOPE THAT HELPS.

Has anyone bought a bottle of this keratin treatment and tried it at home?

Hi, I'm new. I found this site while searching for info on the BKT, and I had this same question. Has anyone done it at home? With all the DIYers out there, it seems likely that someone has decided to save about $900 a year and purchased her own treatment. I'm about to talk myself into it.

I first tried the brazilain keratin treatment at home and it did not work and then I went to the Salon and had it done and there was a huge difference The one they use in the salon is a professional product the one they sell to the public is an imitation. So I dont recommend you spend money for an imitation product.

there was an article on this treatment in the sunday source section of the Washington Post this past weekend. it was speaking to how the formaldehyde in it is a carcinogen. so please do your research and be careful!

I also remember the article posted here some months ago about someone who died with a DIY kit. The formaldehyde amount was not well regulated.

I don't think that the benfits outweigh the risks on this for me.

I was just skimming through this thread and was happy to find this response to the BKT, esp. b/c it mentions that the hair goes back to its original state. Am I reading that right? It's exactly what I would want to happen and besides this post I haven't seen anything about the hair's state after the BKT wears off.

Any other BKT pioneers who can let us know how their hair is doing after their BKT romp?

Hi! I just had BKT done about 1.5 months ago. I LOVE IT! I have mid-back kerri russell curls but completely damaged. I had used a curling iron for years to loosen my 3c curls around my face. Eventually it all just broke off. I got the BKT done so I could grow out the front and then start properly taking care of my hair.

My hair feels completely different and LOOKS HEALTHY. It is shiny, less frizzy and loosened come of my curls. Contrary to why I got the treatment done, I have even straightened it a few times and for the first time in my life- have frizz free pin straight hair.

I highly recommend this treatment to anyone. I am concerned about the at home treatments though. (be careful!) I live in DC and paid about 500 dollars for the treatment, shampoo, conditioner, and deep treatment conditioner.

I will also be happy to answer any other questions or concerns. Good luck!

Hi - Where in DC did you get BKT done? I'm looking for salons that do it in the Washington DC area - including Maryland, DC and Virginia (I live in Maryland).
Thanks

I got mine done at the roche salon. It is at the waterfront in georgetown. I looked around and that was the only place that had it in DC.

It has been 3 months and I still love the treatment. I now have bangs and can wear my hair straight or curly. Even with the rain tonight- it looked great! The real test will be with the humidity this summer

best of luck!

i will try and get some pictures up

Hi - Thanks for the reply about salons in DC doing BKT. After lots of research I understand that the Coppola Keratin Treatment has less formaldehyde and less potent (actually has aldehyde which I think is basically same complex) that BKT. So after my initial excitment about BKT I am now not sure about health risks and am a bit worried - is it worth the risk?

My thing also is I have had a curl "softening" Thio based about a yr. ago because my curls are really crazy, however, it has been growing out and for about 2 mos. is looking strange so I need another treatment. BUT I very much want highlights which are incompatible with Thio, so I wondered if you could do highlights and then BKT or Coppola Keratin without damage?? I have some grey so occasionally do semi-permanent color which is OK with Thio. But I would love some highlights but if I can't do both I had to do relaxer - otherwise I use so much product to tame the mane it dries my hair. You know the DC humidity - its on its way!!!!!!

Default BKT

I am suppose to get this treatment done this Friday! I was really excited, but now I am scared about the Formaldehyde. I do really trust my hairdresser and he says it will look great on my color treated 3B curls and will make it less frizzy, shiny, and still curly but looser. I live in NJ and it's costing me $300 which includes the shampoo and conditioner. You can't use anything with sulfates when you have this done.

Any thoughts??

Default Formaldehyde-Free Coppola Hair Therapy by Coppola

OK, so I decided not to do the BKT b/c of the formaldehyde. It's just not worth the risk. But I have been researching some alternatives. This is what I found.

1. Formaldehyde-Free Coppola Hair Therapy by Coppola
2. Rusk Radical Anti-curl

Supposedly, these are formaldehyde free and as good as the BKT. Anyone hear of them, or had it done???

I had the Rusk Anti-Curl done at a salon years ago, by a very good stylist. It was utter crap for me: Gave me pin-straight hair for one day but the next day it rained slightly and I had huge, shapeless, frizzy pouf. It dried my hair like crazy, too.

But I always, always, always, have lousy results from any thio-based relaxer, so I've learned to stay away from them. YMMV but I was bitterly disappointed. Looking back, I realize it was the Curse of the Thio. For my hair, thio is a pure nightmare.

P.S. And there is nothing "radical" about the Rusk, anyway. No thio-based relaxers straighten "radically" (thermal reconditioning/Japanese straightening is the exception and I expect that's the process more than the product), you need lye or other so-called harsher chemicals to straighten "radically." (I say so-called harsher because nothing damaged my hair like thio does, not even strong lye-based relaxers.)
