After washing, I braid my hair to let airdry. Then normally the next day, I use a ceramic iron to straighten(I have pics in both of my albums showing how straight I can get my hair w/ the most recent in my yahoo folder).

I have straight pics in my album too. My stylist does it - I prefer not to. She pulls wet hair straight with a comb and brush, then blow-dries, then hotcombs, and I touch it up either with a hot comb or a flat iron.

I know you're directing this question to Amneris, but I wanted to add my 2 cents. :)

My mother pressed my hair from around ages 8-13. She used one of the old school hot combs that have a slight curve to it, so that you can get the roots nice and smooth. :) I didn't have any bad experiences when she did this, but when she would get to the back of my neck and around my ears, I had to make sure that I was completely still so that she wouldn't burn me. I can probably count on one hand the times I was slightly burnt. Luckily I never had to walk around with those burn marks that people would get on the ears. As soon as you see it, you know that someone burnt them with a hot comb.

I either braid my hair or band it. The hot comb brings back memories! I remember when my dad used to press my hair and my hands would get really sweaty because I could feel the heat around my ears and the back of my neck. Afterwards, we would go out to Lime Ricky's. That was my favorite place to eat back then. :P

yes, my mama started pressing me when I was about 8 (like shyygirl) and she had the same one. I got burnt if I didn't sit still, so I learned not to move! I have had only good experiences since I was older - I think my straight hair looks nice but you can be the judge of that. I have the Gold pressing comb and the pictures on the box etc. have a lot of 3b/c and c hair - I didn't know we weren't "supposed" to press - all my type 3 friends and family do, and my salon uses it on me and others with my hair type. Hot combs have different settings (but I actually need the highest one due to the density, coarseness and resistance of my hair.) It hasn't dried or ruined my hair yet - I only have it done professionally once a month or so.

msjoker, what is banding?

as for Amneris, it's not that type 3 hair shouldn't use hot combs, I just never knew they did. I just assume blowdryer/brush + flatiron ....

LOL @ burn marks ... that brings back memories ... :)

msjoker 07-06-2005 05:20 PM

When I band my hair, I do it after washing and I use ouchless ponytail elastics. I section my hair and use about 4 ouchless elastics on the length of my hair. This stretches my hair and in the morning my hair is straighter.

Flat irons don't get my hair straight enough initially, that's why I can't use one. I can touch up with one, though. I associate that technique more with 3a or b hair, funnily enough!
