I actually don't even want to straighten my hair, but this one girl at school keeps BEGGING me to.. soo my question: if I flat iron my (already damaged and dry) hair ONE time, will it kill my curls? How long will it take to revive them? Thanks
3b/c coarse, porous (I think), and THICK! Mod CG since: 10/11/08
Avoiding humectants and protein!
I don' think it will kill your curls if you use a good sealant/protector first and a good blow dryer. And then use the flat iron to touch up the ends. Since your hair is somewhat damaged be careful not to over use the flat iron....that is how I got some heat damage in the front, from a previous stylist.
I have never straightened my hair on my own...I don't have the patience or energy. But my stylist puts a good leave-in condish and heat styling protector on my hair 1st and then I sit under the hooded dry to get most of the moisture out. The she uses a brush and the blow dryer and it gets nearly bone straight. She will use the flat iron to bend it under.
It can take a few washes for my hair to curl back up the way I like it....but use a good deep conditioner afterward.
Do you already own a flat iron?

Chi Straight Guard Smoothing Styling Cream and Chi Silk Infusion are great.
When I still had a relaxer and would need to flat iron my roots between touch-ups I would use Thermasilk shampoo and conditioner to wash my hair. I think Sunsilk brought that line and the same products now would be the Sunsilk ThermaShine products. You should get those too....Thermasilk was my HG when I had a relaxer. If you can't find that a good conditioner and then the chi products should do the trick to protect your hair from the heat.
I noticed in your signature that you are modified CG...it you want to use something with no 'cones try Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother and Aveda Brilliant Damage Control. They are a little pricey (even the Chi products are) but my last stylist used them and I loved my hair afterward. You can use the style-prep smoother everyday while your hair is straight.
