Default straightening breakage

So I started straightening last November and fell in love with my hair straight. I feel more attractive and confident and (sad as it sounds) I get more attention from guys with it straight.

However, I've experienced breakage and I've probably lost at least an inch off my length. This is partly because the first few months I didn't know how to properly care for heat treated hair. I invested in a protein complex and deep conditioner I use every time I shower and have noticed my hair is recovering pretty well. My hair doesn't look good curly anymore (it didn't look great in my opinion to start with, but it was longer and therefore better,) so I almost always wear it straight.

Is there any other precaution I can take? I love my hair long, but I also love it straight. Is this an impossible combination? It's so frustrating being a curly sometimes!
