Perming relaxed hair

I have been relaxing my hair for about 15 years. I want to begin to wear it curly again, but the process of growing out my hair is tiresome. Some strands are curly, others straight, and most is frizzy. Has anyone tried to perm their hair or know what would happen if I got a perm or body wave? Would it bring back my curls or make it more unruly?
I've heard that if you have a relaxer, you can not get a perm because all your hair will basically fall out.
Yup you have to let the hair grow out before you switch processes...

It would be the same if you swithced from a perm to a relaxer as well...
relaxing already makes it bad, and a perm will make it way worse. grow it out.
And my hair still gets very curly. I think your hair might be overprossed. The thing is if you relax your hair and stop, it will break off. So you have two options...chop off your hair, or get hair profressionally relaxed (i use affirm) and you can still wear you hair "natural". I actually prefer it this way because my curls are much looser and easier to work with.

I am loving honey w/ ginsing miracle 8 as my treatment.
I have the same question. I'm hating my hair right now and want it curly again. I figured I'd be stuck with my hair like this for a while.

I didn't cut it or perm or anything, I just simply stopped relaxing it and I hardly wore it curly for about one year. I used to do a lot of roller sets and you couldn't tell the difference between the relaxed part and the curly part. It was a very difficult transition at first because the roots were so curly but the ends were straight & I hated the way it looked but I was patient and never did a big chop. I just trimmed every 6 weeks.

My hair NEVER EVER broke off and my hair is now COMPLETELY relaxer free and it is down to my bra strap when wet. It is in better condition than it's ever been. It's healthy, managable, shiney and long - plus I never get the split ends I used to get when I relaxed. I used to believe when people told me that if you stopped relaxing your hair would break off. That's why it took me so long to go natural b/c I was afraid of my long hair breaking off. It is so not true... you just need to condition it and take very extra special care of it during the transition.

I love my hair now, I wish I would have done it a long, long time ago.

By the way, I'm Dominican too (Dominican parents but I was born & raised in NY)
Naturally 3b, boticelli curls, fine hair, bra strap length
I am glad that you are happy with your hair and if I lived in NY i would probably not need a relaxed (my hair is so much better there). But the water and weather here is so different. I dont like the way my hair looks w/p relaxer, I tried and I like to pass the relaxer cause its easier for me to handle.

Also I have wayyy to much hair and I have a huge head!! It doesnt look like it I do. Maybe when I get order I will stop but I dont have the patience right now to deal with it on a daily.

You are probably a Cynthia right ? Im a Cynthia too and my nick name is Cyn everyone calls me that!

I permed after straightening...turned out wonderful. I got so tired of trying to deal with my curls so got this idea to straighten with a box of something I found at walmart. It turned out really nice, but after a few months I started to really miss my curly hair. I spent many hours online trying to find out if the curl would come back or if I would have to cut it off and grow it out again. The general consensus was that it would NOT come back without cutting the straightened part off. I figured that I was going to have to cut it really short anyway so why not see what would happen if I permed. My husband did it for me and I am sooooo happy now. It was kind of frizzy for a few days, but now it looks just as it did before I straightened!

The thing is if you relax your hair and stop, it will break off.

I think it depends on what the active ingredient in the straightener that you used was. I have heard that if you used a thio based straightener that you could use a thio based perm solution without damage. It's when you layer different active ingredients that you run into trouble. I would definitely not try to do it yourself though.
