I decided to wash out that sticky, filmy product mess and try my hair curly today. I should've known better...yes, the curl is relaxed down to a 3b for the most part, but because my damn hair is so fine and weightless and because the stylist cut about 3 inches off against my wishes last week, it is still too short to wear curly. I just can't pull it off. I look so much older and dumpier with my hair this short and curly. My BSL-length hair shrinks up to my shoulders when curly, and this is simply not a good look for my facial features. I even tried Teri LaFlesh's routine with my Denman and my leave-in HEHH conditioner...still didn't give any weight to my poufy curls. I added in some KCCC to try to weight them down, and that helped a little.

Of note: When I applied the BKT, we did the back of my head first, then I did the top, left side, then right side--then I let it all sit for an additional 20 mins, per the instructions--for a total application time of about an hour. What I'm noticing today is that the section of hair that spent the least amount of time with the BKT solution has the most curl.

For those who think they need experience or training to DIY this procedure: I enlisted my very masculine, man's-man bf to help apply the BKT to the back of my head and then flat iron the back of my head. He has never touched a flat iron in his life! Neither of us has any experience or training in hair styling. It's not really about training or education. Follow the directions...that's it! The instructional DVD that came with my product showed everything you need to know. Beyond that, basic comprehension, motor skills, and common sense is all that is needed.

Again, I think my only disappointment is coming from the fact that my hair is:

1) Too fine
2) Too short

I still think that the BKT in and of itself is a success.

Sorry, BL...I'm not feeling pics today--just Maybe tomorrow. I'm going to wash out the conditioner and straighten it tomorrow. Supposed to rain tomorrow...good test of the BKT's anti-frizz property.

Is that sticky feeling happened in your 4 days of waiting after the treatment? If so, it should go away after your first wash.
I have been learning a lot on how to take care of my hair after treatment, and how to make it last and always having looking fresh..

OK, what I do is very simple. I am using Hask Placenta Leave In after I wash and then let it air dry.
Then I use FX Silk drops before I flat Iron. I switch products once in a while for Heat and sweat protection.

Her is my list of protection products I use:
1. FX Silk Drops (walgreens, Sallly's) only $4.99
2. Ojon daily Intensive Shine Serum at Sephora
3. Liquid Keratin Sealing Serum at Ulta

Also, to avoid that limp look that comes in sometimes after flat ironing, I add body waves with my flat iron.

Ghost Poster, have fun with your hair!!!!!!
AphroDiva, you're so helpful and encouraging...thank you so much. I have a very difficult hair type. My hair is like the hair on a newborn baby's head. It's very limp and fine and fragile. The only other "non-baby" people I've seen with hair like mine are elderly people. It's impossible to have fun with my hair because it is soooo difficult and it really doesn't fit my features and it's very fragile. Now, add to that mix 3c/4a curls = disaster.

I can't keep throwing money away on products that don't work for me. I can't find a style that works for me. In fact, this morning, I washed yesterday's product mess out of my hair and then just kind of blow dried it upside down without a brush or anything, but I kind of pulled the curls out with my hands. When I stood upright, my hair looked a frizzy mess, but the volume was exactly what my face needed. So, while my hair is a frizzy mass, its volume suits my face! I'm tempted to leave it frizzy, but the hair itself looks terrible like this. U.G.H.!!!! I'm so frustrated!!!!!!

To answer your question: After washing my hair today, I have confirmed that the sticky feeling AFTER the initial 3 days was from the hair thickening products I was using. Today I reached waaaaaay back under my bathroom sink and found something I bought a million years ago and never used...and I love the way it smells and there doesn't seem to be any sticky film...but, of course, it has been discontinued!!!! Of COURSE!!!!

AphroDiva, I think I've finally made peace with my hair. I located a supply of the hair thickener product on eBay that I have come to like. Also, I have figured out how to style my hair so that it isn't so flat and limp...well, it's still somewhat limp because that's just the nature of fine hair, but it has much more life and volume than before. I'm afraid to do too much flat ironing and curling at the same time...I'm afraid it will damage my ends and they'll start breaking off again, so I either use the curling iron on each section or the flat iron, but never both.

I know you redo your treatment once a month...when you redo, do you use the clarifying shampoo each time before applying the keratin? I feel like I want to do it again already because my hair is so curly and resistant. I'm not sure if it's wearing off already or if I'm just being paranoid.

The secret is in the shampoo, skip it once in a while and do conditioning wash! If I apply heat, use heat protection with silk (or any protein). I avoid the pool as much as I can but If I go to the pool, I wet my hair first and soak it on conditioner.
I also use a leave in conditioner that has been amazing to my hair, specially since I sweat every day, I notice it has been protecting my hair a lot from it.

Feel free to PM me if I can be of help.

O.M.G.!!!! I cannot believe how much better it came out this time. I had heard about the cumulative effect, but with as resistive as my hair is, I was skepitcal. I did my 2nd application on Tuesday, and when I was finished, I immediately noticed that my hair was very straight, smooth, silky--even more so than the first time. I thought maybe it was because the humidity has been down below 40% all week. Last night, humidity was 70%, and my hair was still silky straight--almost too much so because it was getting oily and heavy.

Today I washed. I noticed immediately in the shower that my hair remained stick straight in the shower--which never happens. When I got out, there was a faint wave visible, but it was straighter than it has ever been in my life. I put my usual products in and let it air dry while I did my makeup. Then, I diffused a bit. My hair is currently a loose 3a curl pattern! I could probably get a loose 3b if I used some KCCC or other gel and scrunched, but I am just in shock right now. I was not expecting this!!!

I am ecstatic. If my hair retains this curl pattern, I can wear my hair curly. I now have the coveted wash-and-wear hair I have always, always wanted. My roots are straight, which is even more amazing. My hair has a weird chemical smell, so I hope there is not some permanent chemical process that is going on that is changing my curl pattern permanently and damaging my hair. But for right now, I'm going to enjoy this turn of events!

I forgot to talk about what I did differently this time during the application.

I printed out the instruction for the Coppola treatment and followed those.

The only changes to my original application method were:

1. Shampooed only once with clarifying shampoo.

2. Order of application sections. Last time I started in the back, then did my left side, right side, then top. This yielded uneven results. My right side was significantly curlier than my right side. This time, I started with the right side, then did the left side, then did the top, then the back last.

3. After applying keratin to my entire head, I put a plastic cap over my hair and let it all sit for 30 mins instead of the recommended 20 mins. I really think this may have been key. The plastic cap keeps the hair moist.

I may actually be a 2c now instead of a 3a.

Ghostposter,

Did you do the Coppola at home or use a BKT treatment? I know there are many different types of BKT and home keratins which has got me confused.

Thanks,

Terrapins
Has anyone experienced hair loss or shedding after DIY or salon BKT? I have not done it yet but read another thread that indicated many people with fine hair in particular have had major loss and breakage. DHT is the cause. Not sure of details.

I can't remember what DHT is, but I don't think I'm having an issue with this.

Fine--truly fine--hair is fragile and problematic no matter what you do or don't do to it. People with coarser hair can bleach and iron and curl every day, and still their hair grows. It may look damaged, but it still doesn't break at the rate ours does.

Fine hair is an absolute curse; fine tightly curly hair...I don't even have a word for what *that* is. It lays funny. Thin. Won't hold a curl or style. Fragile. But, the BKT has been an absolute gawdsend for me, so I'm going to keep using it.

Where did you read about DHT and post-BKT breakage?
