QOD Max BKT DIY journey fine 3c/4a~UPDATE 4th app w/rant

Hi all,

Ghost poster, I saw a reply on the last page of the Coppola thread. It is marked "warning, major hair loss". It includes links as well to three sites.

Terrapins
I am so so happy for you! Yes, the more you do it the better the results.
Yesterday I was caught on the rain on a walk from the park with my kids. It was so much fun being able to enjoy the rain as much as my kids do, instead of stressing about the outcome of my hair. My hair dried naturally on a shiny soft wave pattern.
I realized how much I missed before, because of my frizzy dry hair days.

The smell will go away also. remember your hair is coated with the treatment, so whenever you sweat you will smell it mildly for a little while. In a week or two the smell will be gone.

4 weeks after my 2nd application, my hair poofed again, so it's time to reapply. I had planned to do it anyway, but I'm a little disappointed that it only lasted 4 weeks. So, this past Monday, I performed the 3rd application.

Yesterday, Thursday--wash day...hair was super soft, with barely any curl...I would say it's now about a 2a/2b curl pattern. Very loose. I don't have a Fotki or anything, so I couldn't post the pics, but burgundy_locks can vouch...she's seen them.

Still not seeing any breakage, other than when my hair gets caught in something. It was incredibly straight, silky, bodiful, and shiny before I washed it...even in humidity.

I am also doing a home made Keratin Bom deep conditioner every 2-3 weeks. And I think this is helping prolong and refresh my treatment.

Here is a great LINK I always recommend. It has help me learn sooooooo much about the upkeep of my hair.

Thanks for the link, AD! Sure, I'll keep posting here with any new developments or generally interesting twists and turns. In my situation, since my hair starts out with looser and looser curl on each application, it gets straighter and "appears" to last longer. The only other factor that I think may also increase the retention time is that repeated flat-ironing may be damaging your hair enough that the keratin has more holes to grab onto. I only flat iron during the application and waiting period, then I wear it natural. But, I'll keep you posted. I'm noticing that in the 2nd week, the curl is still pretty relaxed and is softer than ever. I can tell the curl is slowly coming back, but veeeery slowly. I am so loving this. My hair as never been this low maintenance ever in my entire life. Not with the hair weave; not with braids. Never.

This is my first time posting . I used qod max on my hair last week. I purchased some off of ebay and did most of it myself. A friend was going to help but at the last minute I felt a bit guilty thinking that the fumes might be harmful and went ahead and started by myself. My friend came over as I was about finished and she did go over the back hair with the iron for another 10 minutes.

I have 2c type wavy hair. It normally looks great if I spend time on it, blowdrying, ironing, ect. But the ends were damaged, and I hated all the effort.
I recently got a humidifier to help with dry skin this winter. I love it, but it turned my hair into one big poofball.

My results with the qod keratin are amazing. I still have some wave left, but most of the frizz is gone and my hair feels so much lighter and softer.

I do think I could use a little more, is there a time frame I need to follow for touchups? I only used 2 ounces as I was worried it would come out stick straight. (my hair is about an inch below my collarbone)

Also, I'm not sure what shampoo/ conditioners are safe to use. I've heard Pureology but I'd prefer something less expensive.

No, there is no timeframe. It's not the amount you use that determines how straight it will be. It's not like a traditional relaxer. It's the condition/porosity of your hair and the tightness of the curl pattern that you start with that determines the degree of straightness. Use however much you need to coat the hair. If you're using so much that your're combing globs of it off the ends, it's simply wasteful--that's all. I just did my 4th application Sunday (4 weeks after my 3rd application) and washed today, and my hair is now barely a 2a. It has almost no curl in it--which was not my intention, but it'll come back.

Pureology is good, but it is unnecessarily expensive. All you really need to avoid are salts (sodium chloride specifically) and sulfates. I personally don't use shampoo, as you can see in my siggie, but I do have Pureology (purple one) (because my hair is highlighted) and Long Lovely Locks Green Tea Cleanse that I use occasionally if I feel that I need shampoo, but I'm happy with my cowash routine. I'm probably too paranoid, but I avoid anything that has the word "sodium" or sulfate and don't use anything with -xane cones because I can't wash them out.

I had my highlights redone on Jan. 5, then BKT 4th application on Sunday. Sigh...dammit. Breakage...from the highlights. I noticed that my hair was different when I first washed it 3 days after the highlights. It felt rougher than usual. It's my fault because I know that fine hair cannot take any lightening of the color, but *I* allowed her to do it. I asked for more gray coverage, and she wanted to accomplish this using the lighter caramel and honey colors she used last time--just more of it. Do not assume that a stylist knows anything about chemistry or the anatomy of hair. I have been shocked over and over at how little stylists know about hair anatomy/structure. The lighter colors are easier to blend with gray. I love the color; it looks nice, but the breakage is ridiculous. My hair is breaking at the slightest touch. The BKT does nothing to protect from this.

1st wash day today. My 4a/3c hair is now barely a 2a. Barely any curl at all. Really, I was just trying to relax the roots because 4a roots with 2b ends looks funky. It's actually still damp as I type this; I haven't put in the KCCC and diffused yet, so I'll get a little more curl, and the curl will progressively come back.

I'm just really pissed off at myself for allowing this color damage AGAIN as if I didn't know better. Color has always resulted in damage for me, but I was also relaxing and using irons every day, so I thought it might be different this time. I have spent so much time and money growing my hair out over the last 3 years, just to have it all fall into ruin over some color.

Dark, fine-haired curlies...stay away from the light hair colors. They'll tell you it's not damaging, but our hair is too fragile for this process. The color--the melanin--is one of the constituents that gives our hair strands what little strength they have. If you remove any of it, the hair will become even more fragile. Plain and simple. Don't buy the "semi-permanent" hype. Doesn't matter if it's done in a salon; doesn't matter if it's done as highlights only. I have a full head of honey, caramel, and auburn highlights now and a bathroom sink full of broken hairs, and all I've done is gently comb my hair with a huge finger comb and put products in with my fingers.

I'm going to have to find another way to camouflage the gray. I'm not even excited about my BKT right now because I'm so deflated over the color damage after all I've been through to grow my damaged hair back out.

I think I may have taken the frequent BKTing too far. There is almost no curl left in my hair. I have heard that the more damaged your hair is, the better the BKT "takes." With the damage from the new highlights, maybe that's what happened.

Sadly, I loved the curl that my hair had before I did this last BKT...I just needed to get the roots caught up, and I guess I overlapped too much. I'm going to let my hair rest for a couple of months...roots and all.

I washed again today and, with the help of KCCC, scrunched in some beautiful 2b/3a waves and curls. I don't notice much breakage either. Maybe it was temporary or a warning. Either way, I will be more careful in the future with the color and the overlapping of the BKT applications.

The take home message: Must not overlap onto hair that has been BKT'd more than twice (unless you want zero curl.) And don't flat iron that hair, either. Just BKT/flat iron the new growth and the next most recent new growth.

Back to hair bliss!

Thanks for all the info. It really is life changing, not to mess with my hair every morning.

I've been using L'oreal's Everpure and it seems like the treatment is already diminishing somewhat. I think I'll pick up Burt's Bees the next time I'm shopping. And I shouldn't use any styling products with cones because I won't be able to wash the buildup out of my hair, correct?

I may have messed it up by not using a hot enough iron, also. I may borrow a friend's instead of using my Sedu next time. I wasn't worried about it the first time just because I was so afraid i'd end up with stick straight hair, esp bc my hair isn't that curly to begin with. Thanks to everyone that posted their experiences on here. When I saw Aphrodiva's before and afters I made up my mind to try this.
I'm glad it's all working out!

I'm a guy with 3c hair
length: down to bottom of eyes

I've got a few questions if that's ok:
1) I take it your hair is poker straight for first 3 days as you cannot get it wet
2) after initial wash is it still really straight? (I don't want it mega staight!)
3) how long could it last with only one application? (my hair was chemically straightened 3 months ago)
4) will it alter hair color
5) are GHD hair irons hot enough?
6) how long does it take to get some of the curl back?
7) I wash my hair everyday, will this reduce the lifespan of the treatment?

Sorry for All the questions, I'm only looking to loosen the curl/kinks not go mental straight

cheers!

Yes, poker straight.
2) after initial wash is it still really straight? (I don't want it mega staight!)
It depends upon the amount of curl you had when you applied the BKT. With 3c curls--no. My natural 4a/3c curls were very tight initially, so there was very little curl relaxation--but it was definitely noticeable and my hair was soooo soft. Each successive application resulted in a progressively looser curl pattern because I *started* with a looser curl pattern each time.
3) how long could it last with only one application? (my hair was chemically straightened 3 months ago)
The rumor is that the more damaged your hair is, the longer and better the result. I'm still not quite sure if I believe this or not. The "lasting" time seems to get progressively longer with each application. My first application only lasted 3 weeks to the day, then I noticed that the curl was starting to return. But, the more you relax the curl patter, the less frequently you have to redo it.--that has been my experience, anyway.
4) will it alter hair color
At first I thought it did, but I don't think so now. My hair is now heavily highlighted, and it doesn't affect the highlights, either.
5) are GHD hair irons hot enough?
Not familiar with GHD. Each iron will be different. Would have to check manual or with manufacturer for specifications.
6) how long does it take to get some of the curl back?
It varies. If the results are too straight, you could simply wash with a "regular" shampoo that contains sodium chloride; this will break down the keratin treatment and supposedly return hair to its natural state. I don't know because I don't care if I ever see my natural curl pattern ever again, so I haven't tried to reverse the treatment.
7) I wash my hair everyday, will this reduce the lifespan of the treatment? I can't answer this because I wash my hair every other day. It probably also depends upon what you use to wash your hair.

Sorry for All the questions, I'm only looking to loosen the curl/kinks not go mental straight

I have to warn you that the curls are not predictable. You may have some 3a mixed with 3b. You may even still see a 3c curl here or there or even a 2b. You could do another treatment a week later to relax that down even further. It's not like a calcium or sodium hydroxide relaxer--you don't have to worry about damage. The only fear I would have about damage with respect to your hair is the fact that you chemically relaxed it recently, and a 450˚ iron on relaxed hair will be damaging. It depends upon what condition your hair is in. But the keratin itself will not damage your hair. I have the finest of fine hair. It breaks at the slightest touch in its natural state, but I BKT my hair every 2 - 4 weeks--and I have lightened it as well.

In fact, I just completed my 5th application--roots only this time--and washed it for the first time today. No breakage, no problems...just relaxed roots. My overall average curl pattern is holding steady at about a 2b/3a in some spots. Scrunching in some KCCC and diffusing really helps bring out the curl. But, if I want to wear my hair straight, I don't even have to flat iron it--just my blow dryer, my hand, and my InStyler.

I hope this has been helpful!

The first time I applied, it only lasted for 3 weeks, then the curl started to tighten up again, so I did it again immediately. Now that it's down to a 2b or so, I don't have to do it so often--except the roots. 4a roots don't work well with 2b hair, so I have to keep on top of the roots every 2-3 weeks.

Nope, it's only stick straight if you want it to be or if you keep doing it over and over before your natural curl pattern comes back. It has been such a lifesaver for me. I need to buy another bottle so that I can keep this going for at least another 18 months, then maybe my hair will be long enough to wear naturally.

Just wanted to check in and update...curl pattern still holding steady at 3a. I haven't reapplied the BKT to my entire head for about 10 weeks. I only do my roots now every 3 weeks. Works out great.

I've given up on the KCCC/KCKT because it makes my hair feel spongy and gummy--my hair is too porous and fine. I have switched to Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee for now; then, when that is gone, will go back to LA Looks. I can get 3b curls with the KCCC, but it's not worth the sponginess later. My routine is otherwise the same.

So, I'm about to do my 6th application--roots only--in the next few days, then it's time to make the decision of whether to have highlights redone or try something new in the battle of the grays. Regardless, the highlights I had done on 1/5/10 have not changed as a result of my frequent BKTing.

So, 4a/3c curly still enjoying low-maintenance, frizz-free 2b/3a hair for over 4 months.

Mods/admins--can we get this thread moved?

Hi,

I just wanted to ask, do you keep just using from the same bottle? I mean, does it store well after the bottle has been opened or do you have to buy a new batch of product every time that you do your roots? I'm from Scotland and nobody in the UK seems to sell QOD max, the shipping could get expensive if I had to buy new stuff every time, as if the product isn't already expensive enough!
