Default Do you make your own hair products?

Hi all

Do any of you make your own hair care products? If so..
What ingredients do you use and why?
How effective is it in your hair?
Does it keep your curl?
Would you rather use synthetic products or natural ingredients in your hair?

Default natural hair

I am mixed and have 3b/3c half wavy/curly (check website to see) dry hair and have been trying to use more natural products on it. I have become a chemist at home with all the essential oils and carrier oils mixtures So far:

*I have added rosemary/sandelwood/lavender (oils for dry hair) to my V05 shampoo and conditoner( I use the V05 poo because it does not have sodium laul sulfate). It makes the poo/condi smells very woodsy/lavendery which I do not like but my hair is really liking it so I am getting over it.

*I made a hair growth potion with vit E/jojoba oil/rosemary/peppermint for apply at night (I wet my hair everyday and shampoo every other or so). If you use this make sure you shampoo at least 2 week because the oils will build up and then clog your hair follicule. This is a nice site I got lots of info from http://motowngirl.com and the recipe is here also

*My number one buy this week was Organic Root Stimulater Olive Oil hair moisturizing hair lotion 3.60 euros. Wow! I am very impressed and I am never impressed I have the dryest hair ever but I blowdry so tht is why. First of all the first ingred. is not petrolum or the second or third. If you are mixed like me most products I have tried all have that and mineral oil in it which I now know just coat your hair and do not let moisture in. The main ingred. in this are water/coconut oil, olive oil/peanut oil, castor oil and a few other but none that are bad(cones, mineral oil, petrolum). I wrote what oils are in it but do not confuse it with just being oil it is combined to make it a lotion. It has this warm smell to it also that I really like. I keep smelling it in my hair. I think it is the coconut oil. If you try this out make sure it is the lotion the creme seemed heavy. I put this on after I condition in combo with spray leave-in (both protect against heat) then I blowdry to almost dry and add curl activator then a little spritz and I am done (I useGlobal choice for other hair products)

Just some info on my experiments. There are not so many reviews on black hair care products here so I thought I would write in. I am overseas in Holland now and am seaching for the Nature Therapy line. I have read good things about it so I hope I can track it down lol. Please leave some info on other products that work for you

Hello/Hoi
Your recipe sounds rather nice, my hair is 4a/b and is growing out past my ears and shoulders into a big, fluffy afro since using natural oils, butters and water.

I have read and tried some of the recipes on Motown Girl and they are also rather good.

Here's one of my favourites:
Shea Hair Smoothie
-----------------------
~ Equal parts shea butter and cocoa butter
~ Equal parts avocado oil and coconut oil
~ Essential oils(EO) or Fragrance oils(FO) of choice (I used Lavendar EO)
I use it when my hair is dry, a little goes a long way. I also use a spritz to lock in the moisture.

Here's another one of my favorites:
Herbal Hair Spritz
---------------------
Equal parts of each dried herb..
chamomile flowers
rosemary
nettles
sage
basil
peppermint
lavender
and 1 vanilla pod (cut down the middle and open)

Essential Oil of choice ~ I use Peppermint EO - about 5 drops - I like the tingle of it but don't use too much or else it will tingle a tad toooooo much/not good!

Method:
Boil 2 cups of spring/bottled water and pour over the herbs, let it sit for up to an hour & strain. (for a stronger tea, let set a bit longer or
even overnight) strain well, and refrigerate. I spray my hair in the morning before work and at night before bed and message in my scalp.

I will have some more recipes later but I have to go to the dentist now for a filling

See you later/Groetjes
Anita

Keep the recipes coming! They are great I hear that vegetable glycerin is a great product to add to homemade conditioner.
