Default You need to work on volume if you have scalp-showthrough...PICS

I did some experimenting this week with a product I hadn't tried before: AG Volumizing Foam. I normally use JoiWhip if I want to do the mousse thing (not my usual stuff, as it does give less pretty coiling, but does give more volume, sure).

Here are pics (taken in same spot on my sofa with same lightP of my scalp show-through at crown with my previous usual combo of curl product and gel with duckbill clips on crown versus the pic of my scalp show-through (hugely camouflaged thinning) with AG Volumizing Foam and a tad of Joigel at crown for lift (and using jaw clips while hair dries with diffuser to aid in lift):

That's an amazing difference! That volume looks great. My scalp show-through has become much more pronounced since going mod-CG a month ago. The defined curl pattern leaves more gaps than my old messy, frizzy poof. I'm getting better at creating more curl on top, and that's helping, but I'll definitely look for something more volumizing. Thanks!

Mousse seems to work the best, I find, but it doesn't make for the prettiest coils.

I really prefer the curls in pic a, but I shudder when I see my scalp patches. Ugh.

So, while the AG Foam one has good camouflage, the curls looks more messy and drier.

Ah, well.

I did impulsively buy that Joan Rivers scalp makeup (Good Hair Day), and I feel like an idiot that I did. Just goes to show that one feels so desperate to cover that up, huh?

What kind of jaw clips do you use?

Don't know if it's because I have scalp "show through," too, but I like your hair better in the first picture. It's looks healthier, has a lot more shine and clumps.

How much do you think the jaw clips vs duck tail had to do with the increase in volume?

Gosh, I never thought much of my scalp show through. I have longer hair ( w\layers) a part that falls naturally, so not sure how to avoid scalp all together. Then of course depending on how much curl I just figured that was natural. I prefer more curl\clumping though...

I find that for volume along length, rough diffusing (getting air IN there) works best. For volume on top (something with some hold and stiffening properties like a harder hold gel, good hold mousse, or paste/powder) in conjuction with the clips is essential (for me), unless I just want to lift with pik and hold until dry, then clip so that drying damp hair doesn't repull it down. Let the product SET and hair dry before removing.

I added more pics of how I'm clipping these days (four large octopus clips...very gentle on hair, no snagging, no funky crimping, and saves root curl). It's in my July Fotki.

Kathy: Yep. It's shinier and the clumps are prettier. But the overall effect (ie how it looked on the WHOLE me) is that the second was more flattering, not to mention I hate the scalp show-through. Yuck. Makes me not wanna lower my head. ; ) And I realize I had the camera flash "on" for the first and "off" for the second, so that probably accounts for 85% of the shine difference.

Steff: I still find the volume is more flattering than clumps for me, but if you find clumps more flattering for your face/body and suited to your aesthetics, then the clipping should still help. Rudeechick gets great clumps and she clips for root lift.

Here are two pics: How I clipped Saturday and the result...

I would be interested to try a clip or two. I just don't want anymore major steps. I thought you were twisting to clip? Plus my scalp is really super sensitive (no clue why this is), so I don't like any pulling. Those clips, literally look like they were just opened & shut on your roots, is that correct? I believe the duck bill clips are a different kind of clip, but I'm not sure (this is all so new to me). Also where did you purchase your clips? Is it possible to just use 1 or 2 for a slight lift? So many questions, but I do appreciate all your help!

Default one more thing

MirCurls-

What CJ products do you find work best for your hair? I'm going to start experimenting with CJ products. I just recently discovered CCCClite & as pf 2 days ago, I just figured out how to make this work with my hair-thank goodness because my hair is loving this product.

Next step-I'm on the search for another mousse and\or gel (I do find spray gels are easier for me, but I'm open to trying something else), instead of my HESMU. I'm starting to wonder if the SMU is working against all the clumpage I get from the CCCClite. Since my hair is fine, my #1 concern always is getting weighed down...

I would prefer something that is a nice hold, but I can SOTC. Thanks again for your advice!

Hon, it's YOUR hair. You can put as few or as many clips as ya want! heh

You are correct. I just open and clip and then a little bit of a "pull up" to settle the clip with lifted roots. That's all. And if I don't like the position--I open it, reposition, presto. No snagging.

They're available broadly. CVS, Walgreens, BBS, online at Sally or assorted places you buy hair products. Just look where hair accessories are sold in stores.

duckbills look like..duck bills. If you do a google search, you'll see pics. Usually metallic and long and slim and open like a ...duck bill. You press the back and the two bits open up. Quite common. If you saw i t, you'd recognize it. Some ladies use it to hold rollers in place or clip into hair to give a little wave formation to temple hair.

My HG gel will be released in a couple months, so i'm eagerly awaiting that (I tested in May/June and again last Saturday, and this baby is da bestest for my fine, dry hair.)

CJ products: I like so many, so I don't know how to tell you what I like best. Probably Rehab and Curlfix mixed for a deep condish or long precondish. And Beauti-Curls rinse out. And CCCC Lite followed by CIAB--a very good combo that softens, adds shine, and holds frizz at bay.

You're very welcome.

Here's three recent pics of my crown:

1 pic from last week to show that using the clips and lifting those roots does camouflage my thinning crown. Maybe the added protein and biotin is helping, not sure. I don't seem to have added thickness up there...not that I can tell when it's wet.

2. Close-up of yesterday after hair dried and I removed clips. You can clearly see there IS thinning, but the lift of the hair is definitely disguising it... and, ooh, my scalp hair is virgin and looks nice and soft, too. Grays are showing, but it's nice to see the health of that new growth that's never been blown-dried straight or flat-ironed (11/22/09 was the last time I straightened.)

3. Same time as previous, just a bit less close-up, showing hairline...

HTH...

This thread is right on time for me, as I am having the same problem. I like your hair in the second pic. That's what I'm going for. I've spent alot of time and money looking for products to fight frizz and trying to develop my curls but am getting stringy clumpy curls. Thought that was my goal (well, not stringy) but now see I definitely need some volume. And will trade volume for frizz.

I'm contemplating doing a clarifying or sulfate wash. Just feel like my fine hair has been over-conditioned, over-oiled, over-producted and lost all body, volume.

Will keep an eye out for any other suggestions!

For comparison this week, two pics:

1. I showed earlier from 9/12 where I did clip for lift
2. From 9/15 where I did NOT use octopus clips for lift

You can clearly see how different the scalp showthrough is with clipping versus no clipping.

In both cases I used the same drying/styling technique (diffusing a la SMasters Method), and in both cases I used Brocato Saturation Leave-in, a curl enhancer, and Brocato Hold On Gel.

For perspective,THIRD PIC: here's a "second day hair" with "loss of some lift" from August. A lot more scalp showthrough. I hope the extra protein, vitamins, and biotin I've been taking (and the irregular MSM and sage treatments) are actually helping.

How much biotin do you take daily...and do you use the MSM capsules? Also, did you try the GNC Ultra Nourishair Tabs?
