Default Water causing hair loss

Hello,
I'm a bit confused so maybe you all can offer some advice. Since I have been back to college, I have noticed my hair falling out in the shower quite a bit. During the rest of the day, it NEVER comes out, even when i try to pull on it a little.
The same exact thing happened last time I came to college. At home (in North Carolina), this never happens. I go to college in NYC and my hair dresser suggested that it is the water, because there are many chemicals in it here. In the shower, I do stand under the water with the back of my head facing the water so it hits that area the most, I did notice that the area my hair is thinning is where the water hits it directly.
Do any of you know anything about this?

It could be stress, lack of sleep and/or poor diet causing your thinning because I lost a lot of hair in college and blamed it on those things and sometimes on the hard water.

Now that I'm back to living at home (we have well water), I'm noticing the same thing about my hair that you're noticing with yours -- it's thinning where the water hits it directly. Like you, I face away from the showerhead. I was wondering if it could be hot water causing my thinning b/c I like hot showers in cool weather. I know heat is bad on hair when it comes to flat irons and blow dryers, so I wonder if it remains true for hot water...

It does not cause hair loss..... it doesnt help the dryness if you flat iron or blow dry your hair though. Using cold water does have more benefits though... such as making your hair shinier.

Oh my gosh! I'm from North Carolina, and since I've moved to New England, my hair has been falling out like crazy! I wonder if it has to do with living closer to the sea (lots of minerals in the water), but the chemicals may do it as well. I've always been on a well back home, so the city water here makes my life difficult (my toothbrush gets hard all the time, my dishes don't get clean--BAH!). I'm moving back to NC in May, and I'm hoping you're right--that's a pretty quick fix.

Have you tried buying a few gallons of distilled water for washing your hair? They're really cheap at any grocery store. If it's truly the water causing your hair to fall out, and every single time you shower you're losing a lot of hair -- then using distilled water to wet and rinse should lead to less per-shower hair loss and confirm for you (if you can repeat this experiment with the same results a number of times) that the water is having an effect on your scalp which is not good.

But there are so many reasons hair can fall out, as noted already. Skin problems are up top of the list also. Allergies, ezcema/seborrheic dermatitis/scalp itch, medication, stress (physical, mental, emotional), lack of sleep, poor or irregular diet, low fluid intake/dehydration. (Wow, that last part pretty much defines the life of a college student, doesn't it?)

Doing a little experiment like this can tell you with more certainty what your problem is or is not and that's a good bit of knowledge to have.

okay so i have been trying all different things to see what was causing my hair loss...i have been eating very well and taking vitamins, and the hair loss decreased significantly, but has not fully stopped. i know when i live in north carolina, hair loss is never an issue. i'm going to probably buy biotin supplements, hoping this will help a bit.

the gallons of water is a good idea, but i dont drive here so its hard to carry them from the grocery store. if the biotin supplements don't help much, i may try that though.
thanks !

Hard water just has a higher mineral content than "soft" water. When combined with soap, it creates a mineral "scum" that creates a caked-on coating on whichever surface it is on.
The only way it could accelerate hair loss is if the scum creates additional weight on each hair on your head, continually pulling on the follicle.
I don't really think it would make much of a difference, your hair will fall out as it wants to.

If you're worried about it though, you can buy water-softening salts from Home Depot. If they don't help with the hair loss, they will at least make cleaning your bathtub easier.

Thumbs up Hair fall solution!

Hey hair is the weakest when wet so that's the reason why your hair must be falling after a shower. So don't stand right under the shower. To regain the lost hair and to control hair fall use Parachute Advansed Therapie Hair Vitaliser. This hair solution has helped me and I hope it helps u too, you should try it out.

If the using the water makes your hair fall out, it must be the water. Never mind what it shouldn't do. If it does, it does. I would experiment to see if it is indeed the water. I would do as suggested and try some bottled water. Any bottled water to see if the same thing happens. If it doesn't, it's the water. If it does, the it's a coincidence that it happened at school, and you'll have to investigate what the issue is.
If it isn't the water is your hair very dry and breaking from the manipulation in the shower? or is your hair lacking protein and breaking as it's stretched from the manipulation in the shower.

If the water is the main reason then you can use mild shampoo to avoid excessive hair fall or try for oil massage regularly as dry hairs will cause damaged easily and always condition your hair after shampoo.
