My gross hair fall pic: is this normal?

I have been CG for 25 days now.My hair is loving it, so is my DH. I decided to track my hair fall post CG and I started collecting the lost hair, just to see if it decreases over time. in 3 weeks i've had 6 hair washes and this is the pic of the hair fall. Please excuse me if this pic is grossing out. I've put a pen in the pic to give you a relative sense. It is too erratic for me to draw any conclusion, can someone please tell me if this is okay?

Well even before CG ive never been harsh to my hair- its still virgin- no colour, no heat, not even a hair dryer! Maybe it has something to do with my diet? Im a vegetarian. But again, i've always been a vegetarian throughout my life of 26 years, till i was 16 my hair was so dense I had to split it up into two ponytails as it wouldn't fit into one scrunchie. Now I need to twist the scrunchie 3 times to hold my hair. In ten years i've lost more than 50% of my hair I guess. For the last one year atleast there has been no stress in my work life! So I don't know why this is happening! Please help me lovely ladies!

Have you had your iron level checked? I've been losing a lot of hair (it seems like anyway) and was tired, so I went to the dr. I'm vegetarian, too, and discovered that I'm very low in iron (and my ferritin level--which is your store of iron in your system). This apparently is associated with hair loss. I take iron supplements and also biotin. It can take a while to see results, though.

Just for the record, I've been vegetarian my entire life and I don't shed much hair.

I really don't know what to tell you. 50% of your hair in 10 years is A LOT of hair. Have you tried speaking to a doctor, maybe a dermatologist? I mean it could be diet, but there might be some genetic factors in there are well. Do you have any family members with this issue? Well, best of luck to you. I'd definitely go talk to a professional though, even if it's just for a second opinion. For now, maybe just try to get a lot of fruits and veggies in your diet and do low manipulation hairstyles.

Is that too much? I seem to lose a handfull of hair with every hair wash. Yeah i guess it could be genetic, my mother is 48, and you can literally see portions of her scalp if she oils her hair. Let me rush to a dermatologist.

Tell me how it goes! Good luck :)

And yes, I'd say a handful of hair every wash is too much hair :\ unless your hair goes all the way down to your butt.

I know this is gross but it's worrying me, this is my fall out pic from the shower. Is that normal?

Mine looks like that too. The last four years have been torture with my hair. I have seen loss, thinness that is kililng me.

StellarCurls 08-16-2012 08:43 PM

When I went back on birth control after being off for a couple of years, I lost a TON of hair (vacuum kept clogging from my hair). Some of it has come back, but my hair is MUCH thinner than it was when I was in my early twenties (now 28 ). Have you had any hormonal changes?

DepressedCurls 08-20-2012 12:53 PM

I got depo July 23rd... :/
The fall out is crazy as well as my hair frizzes and gets matted so easy.

Hi NaturalRemedy, I just got my blood test results. My Fe level is 121, and Haemoglobin is 12.7. The doctor says this is completely normal, and has put me up on Vitamin A, B6 and Zinc supplements. Lets see!!

Just wanted to let you all know I was also loosing hair and I started juicing veggies daily and it has helped quite a bit. (hair loss runs in my family)
DepressedCurls - I was once on Depo shot a while ago and COULDNT stay on it for hair loss reasons, all my family is the same way with all BC. I actually cannot be on any birth control with hormones for that reason. Is your hair pic a loss from one day with no washing. I'd say mine looks similar to that but after 2-3 days no hair wash. Looks normal to me.

Have your thyroid levels checked, if you haven't already. Significant and unusual hair loss was the first sign of my having Graves disease.

You have to avoid well's water while taking bath. Hormonal problem or lack of testosterone may be the cause of hair fall, so look for this prospect as well.

how to treat hair problems

I don't consider myself to have thinning hair but my shower fall out looks like your 2 and 5 every time. I only wash it every 3 days. I think it's normal. When I straightened my hair it shed a lot through the day. If I wore fleece I'd always be able to pull lots of hairs off it at the end of the day. Now that I'm curly I don't shed around the house but only in the shower. I was worried at first but this has been happening for 1.5 years(since I went curly).

MKcurly 11-28-2012 08:06 PM

Oh, and I wanted to mention that in the curly girl book massy says that the average person losses 100 hairs a day. I feel now when I lose them they shed into the mass of curls and only come out when I detangle.

crimsonshedemon 11-30-2012 08:04 AM

If you only detangle/wash every few days, you'll notice more hair than if you detangle/wash daily.
Fish oil and evening primrose can help as can magnesium. Mag deficiency can cause hair loss. The only accurate way to test is rbc mag level which is not how drs test. Over 80% of the population is deficient. http://www.dannyroddy.com/2010/10/5/...oss-a-lot.html
