thinking about using rogaine, really desperate to grow new hair because extensions and flat iron KILLED my hair and now I'm seeing way too much scalp. but I'm only 20 and I don't know if I want to use rogaine for life.. does it really work? and how soon after using it do you start seeing results? what other options are out there for hair loss? Any help would be much appreciated!!
Honey, I use Rogaine but I'm 67! I started when I was in my early 60's and you do have to use it forever. I don't imagine you want to start so young.

I don't think you should use Rogaine for what you are describing. There must be some other way to regrow your hair after extensions and flat ironing. Won't it just grow back in time if you are gentle to your hair and scalp? Rogaine is more for hair loss due to illness or aging.

I'm awfully sorry to hear about your situation, but if you can possibly wait it out, even if you have to wear a wig, I think that would be better than putting a chemical like Rogaine for so many years. It takes several months to take effect anyway.

Please post back and let us know how you are doing.
2/c and some 3A. Modified CG.
Protein sensitive
Highly porous. Color over grey.
Best 1st day method: Super Soaker
Conditioners: Curl Junkie Beauticurls Strengthening Conditioner,
Deep condish: Curl Junkie Curl Rehab
Stylers: Experimenting with cones & sulfates while the dews are high.
Sometimes try roller sets - classic glamor but I prefer my curls.

I am 24 and i am using Minoxodil (same formula as rogaine but a bit cheap). Well, i am using it for 5 months now and i think some of hair are more thick now. But yes, you have to use it forever.

I've been using Rogaine since 30 or so. I have hair loss associated with autoimmune disease. It must be used daily or you lose the hair you regrew. It took a good 6 months so see a significant different in my hair.
I agree with CurlyPearl... I don't think you shoul use Rogaine for what you want. I would stick with good nutrition, biotin, fish oil, maybe msm, and treating your hair and scalp well.

Has anyone tried Viviscal?

Mixed a table spoon on your daily rutine and massage directly on your scalve three time @ week. You will not regret.

Soho, I'm so sorry. How awful that Rogaine grew hair on your face but not where you wanted it! I thought Rogaine only affected where it was applied.

There are good volumizing styling products out there. I hope you find some help along those lines.

I have tried EVERYTHING for diffuse thinning problem which for me has to do with age, genes, and I'd say bad luck. If I were to add up how much I've spend on every product/pill I've been trying since 2006, I would have a major heart attack!
I'm a big fan of Nioxin products. I've seen really good results and notice it thinning again whenever I stop using it.

Have you taken any particular vitamins like biotin or MSM? I'm planning on taking MSM soon, but biotin has seem to help whenever I was taking it regularly. I have early thinning in the top of my head which runs in the fam for women so I've been told.

I have been using Minoxodil for about 6 moths now. Unfortunately it has also given me some facial hair .

Lately I have been also using a Chinese hair tonic called 101G and my hair is (finally!) looking better. I don't know if this last has made any difference but I am hoping to be able to wean myself off the Minoxidil (very slowly). I should add my hair loss is due to traction, not thyroid or anemia.

I'm still using the "old" formula (before they added biotin and more of the marine protein complex; extra biotin beyond my multivitamin aggravates my skin). My hair has thickened a bit and seems stronger; I get less breakage. Also a huge reduction in shedding for me. I'm trying to grow it a few inches longer and this seems to be helping me. I will have to give the new formula a try to see what it does; hopefully just taking one per day won't cause havoc for my skin.

I've been Googling "marine protein complex" to see if I can find it in another/cheaper supplement but no luck yet. Years ago when I first joined NC.com, one member who had my dream hair mentioned about kelp supplements so I may look into that more if the new Viviscal flunks for me.

Gretchen, there is something to rogain, it does grow hair. But, it grows baby-fine hairs that never mature--at least for my experience. I recommend mega-tek. Bc if u cld see the hair I have now, it wd amaze u. It has protein, tho.

My hair has always been a little on the thin side because my strands are fine. doesnt help that I color it.
1)BIOTIN 5000 mg tabs/ MSM (3 tbspns daily in juice)
So I am going to get a bottle of 5000 mg biotin tabs from walmart and a kilo of msm powder to partake of daily.
Since I'm on a hair growth mission now... Im coloring my hair a LOT LESS
2) CAYANNE PEPPER & CASTOR OIL as pre shampoo hot oil treatment
I am sitting here now with castor oil with cayanne pepper and garlic powder (for sulfur content) in it on my hair under a conditioning cap. I will leave it in for another hour or so then shampoo and condition as normal.....
THEN air dry/ wrap... no heat.
3) MONISTAT 7 daily root stimulator
Later I will also pick up some monistat 7 from the drug store and squirt a tube in a bottle of a daily use leave in treatment... maybe coconut oil or maybe mane and tail conditioner with water in it for the base.... Maybe both! I think Infusium 23 would be the ideal daily spray in treatment for many people .... add a tube of monistat 7 to whatever you feel comfy putting on your hair everyday and use it in a spray bottle to get it all over your scalp everyday then massage.
This is my new regimine. I am doing all this for super hair growth really but I am sure it will thicken up a bit in the process... will update.
