Question Regrowth after hair loss due to illness- what to do???

Due to severe pneumonia and a virus that attacked my immune system, and the intense antibiotics and other drugs I was on during a 2 month hospital stay, I lost about 80% of my 3b shoulder length hair. 6 months later and It has just started to grow back and the hair that did remain on my head is of a completely different texture. It is thinner and more brittle. I have had several people recommend I cut my hair short to allow the new growth to come in. Does anyone have any experience with this type of hair loss/regrowth and recommendations about a short cut and if it will help the regrowth?
