Maybe I shouldn't be natural?

Mature woman fair skin fairly short hair, it can be quite curly given the the right conditions. I would love to let it be natural but when in curls there just seems to be too much scalp showing. The only way to hide that is brush or comb to hide it! Coarse hair fairly grey. My routine is clarify, condition and rinse out, scrunch in a tiny amount of leave in, then Boots Curl Creme. Have recently tried Aubreys Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner, Rocking Ringlets and Confident Coils but they all seemed to make my hair harder and dry. I really would like soft curly hair please! Doing super soak gives defined curls but more scalp showing. Either sit under dryer or use diffuser. Any tips to retain curls but hide scalp, think what is needed is to fuzz the curls a bit to spread them out without looking too frizzy! I can't go much longer length as the weight pulls it down and exacerbates problem.

Hi! I just happened to see your post. I unfortunately have a LOT of hair....BUT...i do have a thin area toward the front.

I was just gonna ask if you have ever tried not using a gel? Maybe try conditioner only styling? I know when i go without gel my hair ends up drying and being gimongous!! Yes...gimongous lol! I imagine it may leave some volume in your hair...and you can fluff it once its completely dry.

Or try using an afro pick...and use it to lift your roots when your hair is dry...only lift at the roots.

Whats your curl pattern? I hope i could be of some sort of help to you!

Thank you! I don't use gel at all as that seems to make it worse. Maybe I just haven't found the right one. It's like I need it to spread the hair out a bit. I tried moving the diffuser to open the curl slightly which did help but it was shapeless and "meh"! When straight it does hide the scalp but I would love to let it do its own thing. I do have a wide tooth comb so could try that as my fingers don't help. I'm afraid I don't know my curl pattern I will look into that. Appreciate your suggestions!
Oh maybe by curl pattern do you mean category, I would say 2c/3c definitely high porosity. Just looking at it tonight I think I am going to try brushing the top half to hide scalp and letting it natural from ear down. It really is quite bad when I had a light on above it.

This won't solve the thin hair issues, but I've known people to rub powder on their scalp so it doesn't look so thin. Key is to get a powder that is similar to your hair color. This is one alternate way you could consider.
Thank you, that powder idea might help as my scalp is quite red!! Hair grey to dark grey. Wonder what I would use and where to get it. Do you think people on here do that? I do have baby powder, but maybe you mean the dry shampoo type? Certainly worth a go!

I hear castor oil is supposed to help with thinning hair.

Just discovering my hair likes protein!

On this occasion about 3 weeks. I have tried a couple of times these past couple of years. So probably since my mid 50's. Initially I coloured my hair and there were times then when it was lovely and shiny, although the scalp showing was an issue. In an effort to really allow my hair to be natural I allowed the grey to take over thinking it would help my hair plus the scalp may not be so noticeable against grey hair! I do miss the shine of coloured hair but couldn't go back now. No question my hair is the better of these kinder methods, I accept it needs to be fairly short as weight of curls make problem worse, but it would be nice to find a happy medium. I am in the UK and will try and find a dry shampoo that is curl kind as that might be worth a try. Thanks for your interest!

Ooh, you sound just like me (though still dyeing the grey here!). I leave my hair to dry for about an hour then diffuse until dry, once it's dry I put my hand up into my hair, against my scalp, and kind of gently ruffle the roots. This sort of "fuzzes the curls" underneath without messing the top layer up. As for the top of my head, I have no root curl and do a side part, so once it's dry I take a fine-tooth comb and just gently comb ( the top is where the thinning is worst) to cover the scalp as best I can. I use a leave-in, CJ's CIAB, then a mousse, this gives me enough hold to stop it getting too frizzy when I mess with it.
It's a pain - I get quite good clumps when I get out of the shower but then have to break them up to spread the curls out.
HTH some.

Thank you, it's nice to know I'm not the only one, it would be easy to get it pixie cut but I really want to make sure I have given it a chance.
Thank you for castor oil suggestion, I did do a coconut oil deep treatment yesterday. I am a little worried about using oil that is not completely clear as I have had staining in the past from Jojoba and ACV, did a little rinse with white vinegar which is fine.

Jamaican black castor oil and lavender oil applied daily would help.
