Help!! Losing hair @ age 15!!

Hey! I'm 15 years old and my hair is getting really really thin. I used to straighten my hair almost every day in middle school. Freshman year, I stopped straightening it as much and started taking better care of it but I still don't know know what works for my hair and what doesn't. As much as I'd like using high end products, I don't think it'd be fair to ask my mother to pay a ton of money to repair the damage that I've created, especially after she's been telling me and telling me to quit straightening it. So I'm looking for products that aren't too expensive and really work because losing hair at age 15 really sucks. Also, I was wondering if there were any natural recipes I can do to repair my damage?

I have 3b-ish and 3a-ish hair that is about 5 inches past my shoulders. Also, I'm in the swim team so my hair is a bit more prone to getting even more damaged.
Here's a picture of my hairline. It is the most affected area and I've lost a lot of hair in that area, it's still continuing to get thinner. I have also lost a lot of hair around my crown area.

I just hope it's not too late...

Have you been to a doctor? If it is actually hair shedding (hair falling out from the roots) instead of breakage (hair breaking off due to damage) this could be a sign of a health problem.

Agree there is a difference between mid shaft breakage due to damage and shedding at the roots which could easily mean an undiagnosed health problem. See your family doctor or a dermatologist.

Alway use oil and a swim cap when in the pool. Splits and breaks due to severe heat damage likely need to be cut out unfortunately, hair is dead so no product can repair it.

Do not pull your hair back into tight styles, that can cause traction alopecia ( hair loss due to ripping hairs out at the roots). Loose up dos only, massage your scalp regularly to encourage regrowth.

Be sure you are eating a nutrient dense, balanced and varied wholefood diet, consider your activity level means you need more of everything. Lots of oily fish, veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds etc.

I have seen a doctor, she ran some tests to see if it was a thyroid issue, and it isn't.

I have always had really thin individual hairs, I wonder if it got really damaged because of that?
Also, the hairs would get really thin, then get shorter due to the breakage, and eventually fall off.

Thyroid is only one issue, there are many hormone imbalances or nutrient deficiences that can contribute to thinning hair, IMO go back to your doctors especially if you have not been wearing the tight up dos I mentioned.

Yes fine hair is at higher risk of damage and breakage, but that does not explain why you have shedding from the roots.

I eventually got a blood test and was found to be anaemic. Unfortunately by the time I got the blood test I was sleeping a lot and couldn't do anything.

I suggest you go back to your doctor and ask them to test your:
1. Haemoglobin levels
2. Ferritin levels

Most doctors will happily test your haemoglobin levels but few will also test your ferritin. Ferritin checks your iron stores and if they are low you will have the symptoms of iron deficiency as well.

As someone who is doing a lot of exercise your body has a higher requirement for iron than someone who is sedentary, in addition iron deficiency is one of the commonest nutrient deficiencies in young women.

If you are not anaemic then your doctor needs to do comprehensive nutrient and blood cell tests. Some medical practitioners do this as standard as there are other nutrient deficiencies that have similar initial symptoms to iron deficiency.

If anything is found or any of your tests are near the lower of their range make sure you tell your coaches as it will be effecting your training and recovery.

I remember when I was about 14-15 I was loosing hair by the handful in the shower (okay maybe not by the handful but I was loosing a lot). I never went to the doctor, but I determined it was likely from stress since school was very stressful for me. I also lived on junk food and probably wasn't getting enough nutrition. Once out of school and eating better, it stopped falling out.

Hey, just want to add that that you are a swimmer, so you are swimming in a chemically treated pool on a regular basis. This could be very damaging to especially already thin hair. I would definitely try coating the hair with conditioner to protect it whenever going for a swim, and wear a swim cap. Once done with your swim, always wash, to remove any chemicals from your hair and scalp. Lastly moisturize, moisturize, to replace any lost moisture from shampooing, or try using a sulphate free shampoo. Apply a leave in conditioner to protect the ends of your hair. Because you are in the pool more than the average curly, more care is needed, hope this helps 😊
