What is your transitioning hair routine/regimen?

Hey ladies,

I'm wondering how do you all take care of your transitioning hair in terms of prevent breakage, keeping it soft, moisturized, clean, and styled.

My routine is pretty simple: I wash my hair once a week and shampoo with a sulfate-free shampoo. Before I wash my hair I do a hot oil treatment. I deep condition with MoroccanIOil's hydrating hair mask for 15 minutes. Then I use Aussie's 3 minute miracle. Then I use either kinky curly knot today, Shea moisture coconut & hibiscus, or Karens body beautiful sweet ambrosia leave in and air dry with big twists or braids. I normally rock a twist/braid out and buns. I limit my heat styling to when it's necessary. Throughout the week i moisturize and seal my hair at night for twist/braid outs. For buns I moisturize my hair throughout the day when necessary. I also trim my ends every month or so to reduce shedding and tangles

this is a great question. not sure why there aren't any replies. i am currently trying to develop a routine.

i've been going natural for about 15 months now. i used to be able to just wash & go, but now i don't like the way it looks with the two different textures. i have been using the incredibly rich olive oil moisturizing to wash & go, which i like, but i'm thinking about switching products b/c I don't care for the shampoo, which i find too stripping. the conditioner is pretty good though.

more and more often, i am starting to twist or braid my hair to try to achieve a more uniform look. still looking for my magic formula...
I'm not very far post (10 weeks), and I'm a sahm with nowhere special to go most of the time.

I co-wash with Garnier Length and Strength daily, use the same as a leave in, and either wet bun or wear it curly using some KCCC.

I take keep it simple to the absolute extreme.

Thanks ladies for the replies so far. I'm also entering my 10th week of transitoning. Due to hurricane weather conditons I just have my hair in two french braids with extra virgin coconut oil on my hair. I'm taking a break from heat styling for awhile

Hippiedoll, you asked one of the BEST questions for beginner transitioners! I wish more people would respond because like you and many others, I just made the decision to go natural(no relaxer since August '11) and have NO idea how to start a regular routine.

So far I'm just using water, shea butter, and EVOO.

The pic below is my hair as of today.

It used to be so thick, long, tame n luscious when I was a kid, I look at pics n wanna cry, lol. My mom used to dress my hair a lot, then bought me my first flat iron n let me dye my hair when I was 12.

So yea.. I have sum work to do :/ lol.

My hair is about collar length natural, def a big dif since going natural. Some days tho I feel like I haven't gotten "into" it enough. I try not to wash n go everyday, except w/ a lil pantene, or ill spritz w/ water w/ cantu shea butter as a leave in. I *have* to detangle everyday or it gets so dry. But this way my hair gets kinda oily n it helps to keep my curls from tangling. I'm working on a transitioning style, right now bobbi pins are my bffl. I like bantu knots but my hair is jus too short for them right now, so I stick to practicing on my sister.. who has thick hair -_-
Loose curls w/ a few twists is my style right now

As far as DCing goes.. I could be a lil more adamant but I'm trying to ease into it cuz my hair acts pretty unpredictable. I'm trying henna very soon n I think this could be the answer to my prayers, lol

Thanks for posting. Loving the new growth. A little update on my hair's progress. I have about 2 inches of new growth. I've been using heat on my hair often which is coming to an end because I'm scared of heat damage. I will post a pic of my hair soon maybe when I get more length. I recently cut off an inch or two or relaxes hair. Buns and braid outs are my main styles with an occasional roller set and flat iron

I don't know how to do my own hair (sad I know) and I have to find someone that can braid my hair. I did however, pick up some Cantu Shea Butter LI conditioner and it made my relaxed hair feel like soft silk, while I could feel some curls underneath. I think I may enjoy using this stuff.

What did you guys do to protect it at night when it wasn't braided, bunned, or twisted up? What's your nightly routine? I figured I would just put in some "Coolio plaits" and tie it up with a satin cap for the time being.

I'm really just trying to prevent breakage because I want a long term transition. Or as long as possible.

ive been transitionin for about 5 mths now. i dont hav a set routine, i try to wash my hair at least once a week tho id like to step that up. Before transitioning, i did an aphogee protein treatment bc my relaxed hair was fallin out (about the time i realised i needed a change) which actually made an intense difference for my hair. now, i wash my hair with shea moisture moisture retention shampoo, i tried co washing a couple times but found that i ended up spending even more time on my hair when i did that and still got my clothes wet (guess i need to work on that), i alternate conditioning bet giovanni deep conditioner, sheamoisture balance conditioner (which i highlllly recommend), curls coconut conditioner and alwaysss add KCKT to detangle (my fave product), at this point, i only do this when i know i have time to do braid outs bc i havent mastered the styling part of WNG n bc im in lots of humidity my hair tends to swellll immediately, so i do about ten braids out and leave them in overnight, and somtimes jus for days, i cover the braids with a scarf/hat/whatever. i dont hav a nightime routine, but somtimes ill jus rebraid my hair before bed, and spritz with water and some oil (still experimentin with products)
I chopped off my relaxed ends in April, but I thought I'd chime in with my regimen during my transition. I'll skip over the first 6 months since I went about my normal wash, condition, flat iron routine on a weekly basis. Really not the best way to transition because of the heat damage.

By the time I discovered this site and youtube, I started cowashing once or twice a week (usually letting the conditioner sit on my hair for the ten or so minutes that it took me to finish showering etc), threw in about 12-15 twists or bantu knots, and then took them down for a twistout or bantu knotout in the morning. I shampooed once a month, deep conditioned every other week, and clipped about an inch or two of hair off every month.

For those of you transitioning in some of the colder states, try to learn as much about moisturization as possible during the coming months. I had the worst time with my hair from November - February; I am glad that I was able to handle this learning curve while only incurring damage on my relaxed ends.

I agree learning about your hair and developing a steady regimen makes transitioning so much easier. Right now I wash with sulfate free shampoo once a week and co wash once a week. I alternate between curly pony puffs, flexi rod sets (no heat), braid outs, and buns. Heat styling is reserved now for special occasions or when I need a break from curly styles. I use natural hair care products that work well with my hair

I have been transitioning for 11 months so my routine is pretty much set at this time. My routine is different both days I wash. On Wednesdays I pre-poo my hair with Neelibhringadi oil. I wash using Bobeam's soap bars or when hair is really gunky Keracare/ As I Am cleansing cream. Then I detangle with CJAO.
On sundays I still pre-poo with the same oil but that's also my deep condition day. I either use (a) henna, (b) bhringraj, bhrami, hibiscus mix or (c) AOHSR with honey and EVCO. Then I wash with my bar. Deep condition with CJCR.
The last part of the routine is the same on both days. I use DB transitioning cream as a leave in. I seal with QB OHHC then let air dry. Later I'll either put it in a bun or braid or lately I've been doing Bantu knots to take down the next day.

Hope this helps someone.
Hair: 3a, normal porosity and elasticity
My hair loves: Vatika and Bhringraj oils, adores henna.
My HGs: Bobeam's shampoo bars, CJAO, CJRM, Original Moxie's Hair Bling, Terressentials,

Let's hear it for beautiful curls!!!
I'm a CG newbie as well, stopped using sulfates shampoos about 6 weeks ago. Then I learned about botanical conditioners and homemade recipes for moisturizing hair. My curls as starting to shape up although I still have about an inch of straightened hair. I can't wait to get rid of that! But my hair is short, just about to my collar when dry. I can do a pineapple with my hair but it's a small little guy with lots of curls not long enough at my neck. I sleep on a satin pillow case which has helped to prevent breakage.

I have to wet my hair in the AM otherwise after pineappling at night I look like sideshow Bob from the Simpsons! My routine is co-washing every 3 days or so. I deep condition weekly with olive oil, avocado and whatever other household products I have. I just purchased aloe vera and jojoba oil to try this weekend.

I'll post a picture this weekend. But my hair is corkicelli underneath and a tad looser on top layer. I am planning on getting my straightened ends cut in about 3 weeks...I'm nervous but at the same time I am excited to see what my hair will look like after those nasty, damaged ends are gone...

Thanks for all of the information you ladies post. It really helps a curlygirl who is transitioning and no other CGs around...
I got my last relaxer on June 6th of 2011. Sooo I'm five month post almost six soon. I've been all over the place with a regimen. But currently I co-wash once a week and deep condition once a week. I shampoo when my hair tells me it needs to be shampooed. I usually air dry, then I moisturize my hair with my whipped Shea butter mix and seal it. I then oil my scalp with Jamaican black castor oil mixed with Vatica coconut oil

Thanks for posting everyone. I was struggling with my hair last week and today but I'm still on the natural hair journey. My hair has become so healthy in 3 months time without a relaxer. I'm learning that my hair needs lots of MOISTURE!!! Braid outs and buns hide my two textures so well. I get lots of shrinkage now between the line of demarcation
