Default How to moisturize and seal in moisture? And protective styling

Hello, I have been transitioning since May and I'm still learning which products to use. Which products do I use to moisturize? And which products seal in the moisture? My current routine is to use coconut oil daily. But, I guess I'm doing something wrong since my hair is still dry. Please help!!!!

Also, are twist outs considered a protective style?

Thanks,
Ki

Hey there. Hope you are enjoying your journey so far.

Water is the only true moisturizer. You want to make sure that you're products you are using for moisture have water listed as the first ingredient. Oils and butters, like Shea, are sealants, they help to retain/seal the moisture. These should be applied to wet hair to help seal in the moisture. After you wash your hair, apply your leave in, add your oil.

great tips from SCarrin. I use Herbal Essences as a Leavin. I use Shea Moisture'sOrganic black soap purification masque as a deep conditioner. Hope this helps.

Also try to remember that a leavin is a moisturizer but a moisturizer is not necessarily a leavin. But any moisturizer you use should have water/aqua as the very first ingredient. Use that as a baseline when looking for moisturizing products.

Since you already have coconut oil, use that as your sealant.

For my leave in, I switch up between the cantu leave in or carol's daughter hair milk.

I purchased the Shea moisture masque and in going to try that as my deep conditioner. Honestly I haven't really been deep conditioning which is pretty bad, but im going to change that.

I've been transitioning for 10 months and never knew this... Thank you because you've helped me so much! I have trouble understanding how to take care of my own hair because I never really had to when I was getting relaxers... I also need some help with the terminology and abbreviations in the natural hair world.

@SCarrin Pretty much summed everything up ! In addition to, you should moisturize your hair and seal nightly or as often as you need to. This is very important when you're transitioning. This can make or break the progress you have accomplished so far. Dry hair will become brittle and break off where the two textures meet. Keep every inch of your hair hydrated and sealed with an oil of your choice.

Porosity is key when trying to find that perfect moisturizer. you make have low porosity which may be why your hair isn't able to retain moisture. I honestly suggest you experience with different moisturizers!

Thanks so much ladies! My new regimen is to use a leave in, then oil, then a shea butter mix. My hair has retained so much moisture now :-)
