I'm having a straight hair hangover :(

Like Tree1Likes

Ugh ladies. Yes another post of a woman lamenting over her old pics of that long shiny hair.

Will I ever be as cute, sexy, admired, and attractive with my curly hair?

Of course right?

Just feeling blue about the whole never straightening again thing.

I'm in no way against straight hair, nor do I hate curly hair.

I fell in love with my "long" hair, you know how it is.

That same "long" hair will not be achieved for many, many moons with my curly hair.

I decided to stop straightening so I could stop the damage, but at what cost?

I was having these feelings too. I loved the way my hair looked when I had a fresh roller set and blow out/flat iron. The style became too much for my hair. The heat gave me a great deal of dry split ends. This led me to relaxing my hair all over again. I thought that my hair would be healthier instead of using heat almost every week. My hair was just as dry relaxed. I mostly wore my hair in braid outs/buns for the majority of 2011 to mask breakage and damage I was experiencing. I still love my hair straight but I like curly even more. I learned to suck it up and stop trying to make my hair do something it was never meant to do. I don't advise using heat while going natural. You'll be left with split ends for days from my experience. Now I'm starting all over with the transitioning process again. I have an inch of springy new growth that I'm gladly embracing! Stay strong. I change backgrounds on my phone every week, using pictures of natural/curly-haired women. This natural hair journey isn't easy! But stay strong and good luck!

OMG this is such a good idea. I also wanted to come back and update that I'm feeling MUCH better about my curls. I cut all the straight pieces off and it left me with a super short halo, but I realized that these curly bangs actually don't look bad at all and the short curly nape is totally hidden by the rest of my hair. I think putting my hair back in yarn braids every once in a while and when I start to feel down on my curls will help me also.

So indeed stay strong fellow transitioners!

Congrats! . I think we all go through a period during transitioning where we still long for a particular hairstyle because we grown accustomed to it. Trust me I use to be the queen of straight hair. I didn't fall in love with curls I became bored with my hair which led me to transitioning (my first time). My hair was never bone straight with a relaxer but I tried everything to make it "behave". I was hooked on roller sets, blow outs, and flat irons. In 2009, before I even knew what the heck a twist/braid out was, I did medium size braids all over my hair and used rollers at the ends of them. Then I took down the style in the morning and I fell in love since then. I didn't know I had an actual curl pattern until I decided to grow out some of the relaxer during the summer of 2010. I stopped transitoning because I wasn't educated enough on how to "go natural". Plus I was still stuck on wearing my hair straight or making it. This is actually funny because as a kid I never had a desire for straight hair. During HS I wanted to be one of those girls with long flowy relaxed hair. Since 2010, I fought back and forth between transitioning and relaxing. My last relaxer was in the beginning of Feb. 2012. Having my hair straight all the time became a burden for me and a hassle. My wash days use to take up my entire day. Now washing and styling my hair takes 30-45 minutes. Each time I tried to transition I learned something new about my natural hair growing in. My trials/errors have taught me a great deal of wisdom. I need to have PATIENCE when dealing with my natural hair. I also learned that all hair should feel beautiful and pampered.

^ went through a similar journey after coming from a "relaxer is the norm" family. my last relaxer was nov 2010. finding the natural world really helps u get over ur fear of discovering ur hair and helps u learn to appreciate all unique curls. u learn more every year wat ur hair needs. everyday I walk by that "back up-laxer" jus in case. but im getting used to my hair and paying less attention to it. ive never been more excited for the day my hair is bra strap or longer stretched w/o relaxer. those relaxed ends are really jus a nuissance now. however I cornrow my hair under a wig and I really like that extra inch or two...ill get ovr it one day

Textured hair is really a big change. I'm more use to it now because I was simply tired of wasting an entire day of going through the process of straightening my hair. I find that I have more options with styling my hair. Transitioning is really not a big deal to me anymore. I see it as a lifestyle change.

I miss my straight hair too! The hardest part is when I see my cousins with the thick, straightened hair I used to have. In our family, we all have thick, long hair, which is coveted and our crowning glory. I admit: I bit of my confidence lives in my hair, so you can imagine I struggle with transitioning. My last relaxer was in May 0f 2011, and I stopped adding heat to it in December (I think). In January I got Senagalese twists (which I LOVED) and now I have a full sew in, which Im struggling with also. I am very anxious, because I plan to cut off my relaxed ends in May at the 1year mark. But this sew in is tough! I mean I like the idea, but it is so itchy and I have bangs that are terribly hot and break my skin out occasionally. I'm trying to maintain and hold out... I think it won't last much longer than a month. (I'm trying to be strong because my friend did the sew in for free!)
Yea. I'm getting to the point where I think I may just have to realize that a perfect super structured regimen just doesn't work for me. I like to change my styles up and sometimes have no style. I'm now open to some carefully placed heat.

I will try rollersets with flat ironing the roots anywhere except for the bangs/edges areas as they get heat damaged quit easily. I haven't done one yet I'm actually considering investing in a pibbs knock off hooded dryer.

I also am interested in doing some color or highlights but my mind changes so often about which color I'm just going to leave it in for now. I actually think I look better with my natural dark hair after seeing some old photos yesterday of me with brassy hair lol.

I also want to perfect my wash and go. I had one the other day and it was so perfect. A side part with plenty volume at the roots and defined touchable curls. It was actually the best on the 2nd day. So I am experimenting with sitting under a hood dryer for 15-30 mins after a wash and see what that gets me. I did it yesterday and it came out nice, less frizzy and a bit more elongated I think.

I'm right with you! @TriMixDiva. I like to switch my style up too often. I did great so far using no heat for 2 months. I'm really itching for a rollerset and flat ironing my roots. I'm scared about coloring my hair. I probably won't try it until I'm fully natural. I really want auburn highlights. The most I've done was a rinse. I think going natural is the best of both worlds. I get my roots pretty straight with rollers. I just touch my roots up with the flat iron for a sleeker look. I'll probably wear my hair straight for the rest of this month. Granted that there's very little rain/humdity lol. I'm getting a little tired of using a lot of product on my hair. Anyway enough of my rambling, let me know how the results go!

@TriMixDiva I use a cheap Conair hooded dryer from Walmart it gets the job done though. I usually go under the dryer for 30 minutes then air dry the rest of my hair overnight. Or I air dry part of the day then go under the dryer. I try to minimize using a lot of heat. When everything is dry I flat iron my roots. The process is long but it's worth it. Don't flat iron the length of your hair. Wrapping should give you a sleeker look. The style lasts longer by wrapping in my opinion

Thank you. I have a cheapie conair too that only dries the top of my head. I really want to invest in a dryer that will get the whole head dry evenly and in 1 sitting. When I take the plunge I'll post my results for sure.

I know the dryer does the same for me too. Whatever doesn't dry I just use the blow dryer. My roots usually revert back after washing. I'm going to try roller sets for a month and see how it goes. Minzani has a humidity resistant spray I want to try

Yes! I don't plan on ever going back to relaxers. I'm 11 weeks post. I didn't think it would come out so straight but I guess a good deep conditioner helps. I probably won't straighten it again until after summer. I already miss my braid outs.

My roots are already reverting back so I'll just pin curl the blow out for the next 2 days. Then towards the end of the week I'll clarify to get the cones out. I felt like that was one of the few times I used less heat and had great results. I feel and look like everyone else though lol
