Too scared to cut my hair

My hair was very badly damaged from relaxers at a young age, it was so short, wouldn't grow and was so dry and crusty lol.
I went natural about 4 years ago, and my hair has grown to my shoulder blades (when stretched) and shoulders when curly.

Now its stopped growing, it hasn't grown in about 6 months maybe longer. I know I badly need to cut it, I havnt had a proper trim or cut it for about 6 years lol. My hair grew to a length I'm kinda ok with, but I want it longer when its curly.
Do I really need to cut it?? Weren't you all scared when (if you did) you cut your hair??
I'm so happy because all my life my hair never grew, now I might need to cut it

Hello. I also received perms as a child. My hair was long but then my hair was severly damaged and ive been working these last 5 years to repair it. Ive been natural since november 2010 and at first it was easy. Now when i straighten my hair, my ends stick out horribly and have come to find out that it will only get worseif i dont get them cut. Its because your ends are the most damaged part of your hair. Your hair will never maintain a healthy look if you dont cut it
Do you think I will need to cut it all off at once? Or can I do a few inches every couple of months?

Thanks hennyrox, I think I'll do it that way
But is it true if you don't cut off all damaged hair it makes all your new growth end up damaged aswell??

Why are you attached to your hair when it's damaged? I think your hair would look really cute with a short fro, (look at the pic's in hair types.) You have the hair to manage the look! If I had this hair type I certainly would go for it. Why not give it a try?
Lol @ kimlee... when you put it like that lol. It's true I shouldn't be attached to ugly damage lol. I guess it would look a lot better with short healthy hair than medium damaged hair.
It took me so long to grow it to this, but now I know its possible at least.

Ahh.... cutting it is so scary though lol... I've never had a hair cut in my life and only had about 5 trims from my sister lol

Hi coconilla,

I totally get where you're coming from! I didn't want to cut my hair for ages, then realised if I didn't it would just keep breaking and get more damaged. A few years ago now I cut about five inches off it which meant shortish hair. After that it was so much better and it actually grew! Now my hair is longer than it ever has been. A few months ago I noticed I had some split ends and didn't want the whole problem to start again so I took an inch off it and again, it was better for it.

I'm planning to chop my hair off out of choice soon... and am once again a bit scared. BUT I keep telling myself it will grow back. I always thought my hair grew slowly until I cut it a few years ago. Actually it was just being slow because of damage. So if I go for short hair and then have second thoughts, it will only be a few months until it's back to a reasonable length.

Try and keep it in perspective... it's not a tattoo. Also, try taking extra vitamins and drinking lots of water to encourage hair growth once you've cut it.
You could cut in two stages, so you're not losing loads at once.

Sorry, I know I've gone on! Good luck on your journey to healthier hair.
I did my BC w/o giving it a second thought 16 months ago after transitioning for 6 months. I immediately had permanent color that was 4 shades lighter put in. BIG MISTAKE! Now I find my ends are ravaged and no matter how I baby them, the split ends abound. I have to cut off about an inch to get rid the remaining color and the split ends.

My hair in the back grows faster than the front. I decided to just get it cut into a hairstyle that achieves two goals: gets rid of the damaged ends and allows my hair to be the same length all over, which is what I have wanted for quite sometime.

I say do it. Your hair will thank you for it.

texture - medium/fine, porosity - low/normal, elasticity - normal
co-wash - NaturelleGrow Coconut Water or Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm Bark & Blue Malva Cleansing Conditioners
LI - KCKT mixed w/ SM C & H Curl & Style Milk
DC - NG Mango & Coconut H2O or Chamomile/Brdck Root
Gel - SM souffle (winter), KCCC (summer) or CR Naturals Aloe Whipped Butter Gel (year round)
Sealers - Virgin Coconut Oil, Avocado butter, Aloe butter
Ayurvedic treatments - Jamila Henna, Sukesh, Aloe Vera Powder, Hibiscus Powder
.

I think I just need to be brave and do it then, but not all at once. It's true its not like its a tattoo.
My hair is shorter at the front aswell and grows way slower than the back.
I rate all of you who did it or are going to... takes serious guts, even though you all think its no big deal lol.

Thanks for all the answers

Just remember it's for the long term good. As I said I'm apprehensive about having short hair (so it is a bit of a big deal) but am fairly confident I'll make it work.

It will be fine!
Thanks hennyrox, I think I'll do it that way
