Default Help! Transitioning: Curly Perm to Natural

I have very long hair... about 22 inches. My natural hair had a mixture of curls from 2c to 3b. About 7 months ago I made a DUMB decision and got a perm thinking it would make my curls uniform, it did... but instead of uniform curls it came out in waves. I miss my curls!! My hair has now grown in around 3 inches, but I don't see my curls coming back. My question is is my long hair weighing down my natural curl pattern and if it is will I have to cut a lot off to get it back?

I'm no expert but I wouldn't think that your long hair is weighing down your natural pattern unless you have a ton of products on it; then that would be a different story. What is your typical week with your hair? How often do you wash your hair? And what products are you using?

The chemicals in the perm solutions have permanently broken the bonds in your hair and reformed them, your natural curl pattern is gone, you cannot get the curls back unfortunately. You either have to grow or cut out all of the hair that was permed, the three inches at the virgin roots are likely not showing the curls because they are being weighed down by the rest of your hair and/ or because there is not enough hair for full 360 degree curl.

Are you following the Curly Girl method? You might be able to get a little more than just waves out of the permed hair if you do.

Thank you ladies for taking the time to answer.

I can get some curls out of my perm, but don't last a long time and fall flat. I keep trying to find a product to keep them bouncy, but have yet to find one. It probably doesn't help my long hair is all one layer. I've been wanting to get some, but I'm scared. I don't know if I should go to someone who specializes in curly hair or will a regular stylist do?

I think I'm doing most of the curly girl method...

I don't shampoo often, 3 times a month tops. When I do I use DevaCurl No-poo or Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo.

I condition my hair every 2 to 3 days with either DevaCurl, Shea moisture or Wen Fig Cleansing Conditioner.

Once a week I do a deep conditioning treatment.

As for styling products I leave a little of whatever conditioner I'm using in my hair after that its whatever I choose. I have so many products I have trouble sticking with one.

Am I forgetting anything?
