I just went for the whole enchilada the first time. I cut it myself in the bathroom while my hubby watched. You can see it in my photo albums if you look at "The Great Transition" and then the "BC". It was pretty long when I cut it all off. I was tired of the different textures too. Of course now, I am cutting a little at a time and trying to regain the beautiful curls that I was growing before I completely lost my mind last Summer. I won't cut it all off again, but I will be cutting back the overprocessed hair. Just don't want to look too crazy or like I have a curly mullet.
When I decided to go natural, I had a little over 2 feet of relaxed hair (it was about halfway down my back), so I didn't want to cut it off all at one time cause I was scared how I would look. Not to mention almost everyone I told I was going natural questioned me or told me I was dumb to cut off all my hair.
I've been transitioning for about a year and half (last relaxer jan 06) and I think I only have about maybe 3 inches of relaxed hair left. I'm going to get the rest of the straight ends cut next week, because I'm anxious to start wearing my hair natural. It's just above my shoulders in the back, and ear length in the front.
My last relaxer was 02/07 and my BC is scheduled for 07/14. So not that much time just 5 months. I am so tired of the relaxed ends. I dont know what i will look like with a twa, but whatever I look like I am ready to WORK IT!
I'm actually 11 months into my transition now. I am hoping to go a full 18 months before choppng off whatever is left of my relaxed ends. I contemplate chopping each day as I step outside into oppressively humid weather and my hair strands begin to curl in random places, thus causing it to depart from my head in different directions. (I'm still looking for solutions to that problem if anyone has suggestions). I'm not cutting now because I feel I need more length in the front (apparently it grows slower there than in the back of my head). I have been able to blend the relaxed and natural parts by doing roller sets twice per week. It was working well until the drought ended...
Hey Curly Dee, my crown goes soooo slow too there is no way I could BC it would be totally uneven and I wouldn't want to cut all the progress in the back just to match the front. I have already prepared myself for a long transition 3-4 years. I want the natural hair to be at either APL or Brastrap unstretched before I BC.

My front and crown grows pretty slowly too and I realized that my hair is soooooo uneven after I did the BC. My longest strands (which are in the back) are about 8 inches long. I can at least make a ponytail which I'm happy about.....and I've been trying different things to make it look even if I wear it curly. It's been fun experimenting.
I'm actually hoping that I can get the front to stretch to the back for some sort of a decent ponytail/puff at the 18 month mark. If I'm not satisfied with my progress, I may just wait longer. We'll see...
I've been transitioning for six months now. I'm planning on chopping the relaxed ends off in either late November or late December of this year, so my total transition time will be almost eleven months or almost one year. I don't know how long my hair will be then, but it will be long enough so that it's not supershort. Plus, I really want to start off 2008 with 100% natural hair.
6 months since last relaxer
new growth is either 3c or 4a, can't really tell
I think I transitioned all of five seconds. That's not true. I'd been unintentionally transitioning since February. When I decided that I wanted to wear my hair natural, I thought I'd continue to transition into it. I'm a short hair kind of girl, though. I ended up cutting off a lot of my relaxed ends one night. Then, I BC'd on June 29th.
This is month #7 and my natural hair and my relaxed ends are at war right now! My natural hair is like a vine growing at the speed of light LOL and its choking my relaxed ends. I don't think I'm going to be able to transition much longer because my hair is overwhelming me. Yesterday I washed it and put it in a bun. My hair is really thick and growing nicely. It takes so much not to grab some scissors and go nuts LOL
My goal is December and I'm trying to stick to it. I need to do a roller set because my thick hair gets knotted up too much when I air dry it in a bun.
Big Chop: 9/23/07 Relaxer free for almost 5 years!
I did the BC almost 2 weeks ago. I started cutting in March...I had hair past my shoulders and cut it into a bob that stopped at my ear.
I didnt feel like dealing with the two textures anymore and wanted to give it a chance to grow a bit before I go back to school in the fall, so I cut off the rest of the perm this month
I'm really exicted for my hair to grow back out. I transitioned for 11 months but I think all the flat ironing I did kinda stunted my growth. I probably should have used more transition friendly hairstyles
I have naturally long hair and i didnt get as much growth as I expected during the transition....but it might seem like that because I have so much shrinkage.
My hair kinda looks like Eva Pigford from top model when its curly with a little more length...but when its stretched out my longest layer is 4 inches and my shortest layer is 2 in.
