Did anyone consult with a hairdresser before BC?

I am thinking of having a consultation with a hairdresser before I do my BC. That will be maybe in my 12th mnth of tyransitioning. Did anyone do that and how did it go?

I apologize for my ignorance in this subject but what does BC stand for in this forum?

BC stands for Big Chop. Meaning cutting off the relaxed ends of your hair so you have 100% totally natural, unprocessed hair.

ok thanx for the info. I did have my BC done in mid March this year and it was one of my sadest hair moments. My hair felt so short I thought it was never going to grow again. I cried it for a few minutes but then forgot about it after visiting the mall hehehe. Unfortunately I do not have any pictures of the BC moment but can tell you now that after two months and a half the results are not so bad. My hair is finally just one texture and growing a lot more now than ever.

How long were you transitioning before you did the BC? I have 3 inches of new growth and want to cut but am weary. I just spoke to a hairdresser friend who does great hair. I may just just take the plunge.

Legette, I see we're neighbors! I love going to Salem and Nashua in the summer time.

I have been thinking about the big cut over and over again. In just a few weeks my hair has grown alot and its so thick. Really short hair doesn't suit me. I'm almost tempted to buy a wig and see how I feel in it

I had about 5-6 inches of new growth but my hair was 8-9 inches long at the time. Removing the relaxed ends made them curl even more so now my hair looks shorter than ever. I kind of agree with Maria, I hate the shorter lenghts however my hair is growing rapidly according to my hairdresser so for now I will leave it the way it is. In case I get tired I'll have my hairdresser blow dry it straght for a change. I prefer not to use the flat iron as it made short term damages to my hair recently hence why I chose to let my hair grow natural. Believe it or not my hair is currently below my shoulders when it is straight. I will take pictures later this week so you can see the difference

...funny how we all live near each other. I am closer to Legette than I am to Maria but the distance is still not too far away.

There is a great salon in Windham which is 15 mins from my house. The owner is dominican and is listed on this website. Soleil Salon and Spa. I am off exit 3 on 93 and exit 2 on route 3. I am originally from the island of Trinidad. As you already know by now there are a lot of Latinos here in NH. Not all white as people expect it to be.

I know, what a small world! I almost bought a house in Nashua this year, but decided against it because my husband works for the city of Boston so I moved to Beantown instead. I used to be 30 minutes from NH and now I'm about an hour. I like to go up there to take advantage of the tax free stuff. I go to Water Country and Canobie Lake Park every year

Oh and I know that the border has a large Latino population. I wanted to move up there to get away from the noise & pollution. Oh well, maybe one day. I know a few people from Trinidad & Tobago, I heard its beautiful there. One of my co-workers and very close friend was from there. She had long curly hair and would tell me that she never used shampoo. I would go "eww that's gross" but I'm the dummy and should've asked her because she had long gorgeous hair and I didn't LOL

I live way up in Goffstown (approx 30 min away from Windham). I've been trying to look for the nearest spanish salon as I got tired of driving so far to visit my hairdresser every weekend @ Lawrence, MA. I know there are a few others in the Manchester area but I'm still picky about changing. I guess everyone is too when its time to choose a new hairdresser. Anyhow, it is nice to know that there are some curly girls around that are as concerned as I am about caring for their hair.

OK Ladies. I made an appointment at a salon for next month to cut my hair. Let's see if I keep the appointment.

Legette68 its been a while since this chat... your hair is also looking fabulous. How do you keep your curls from looking so nice? Do you wet every morning like I do? I need to stop doing that.

Hi Jeannie_L,
Thanks. I have to wet my hair every day or it will look like a big notty matted mess.
I am looking forward to it getting much longer to see if I can achieve second and maybe third day hair. I keep my routine very basic. I will shampoo with Cream of Nature at least once a week and rinse or co wash the rest of the days. I add conditioner and oil to my wet hair and then rake in Gel. I love HE Set Me Up. I think it is the best. I realized that I cannot be a Curls Junkie mainly because I cannot afford to and many times the products do not work well in my hair. I like to stick with what works. I do not apply any heat to my hair. Haven't in months. And take supplements to help from the inside out. I want to keep my hair in its most natural state as possible.
I plan on getting a cut to shape up the hair sometime next Spring to help it grow out beter.
How are you doing with your hair journey?

well, I bought myself a flat iron about two months ago and before the first month I knew I had to stop using it so I went back to leaving my hair curly again. I get frustrated because I have to wet it every morning and I think it might be the reason why there is no growth improvements plus its not very pleasant to have a wet head on cold days. I don't shampoo much but do wet everyday and apply serum and oil based leave-in conditioners. I still think I'm not doing the right thing. I used to be able to grow my hair faster when it was relaxed and now it feels like its stuck. I was looking at some profiles in Fotki and noticed that some girls with very long curly hair just don't comb or wet their hair hence why their hairs are so healthy. Although I'm not too crazy about putting my hair in a bun, for the first time today I did (alleviating my daily hair dilemas) and I am planning to do that tomorrow as well then wash on Wednesday. I'll try that more often during working days to avoid rewetting and see how that goes. Crossing my fingers... hope it works.

Jeannine,

I noticed that your hair is very wavy on top and the bottom is very curly. I wonder if maybe the wavy part is your real hair texture and the bottom is how it came out when you stopped relaxing.

By the way, you have beautiful hair. Do you put it in protective styles at night? I am the rollosetting queen LOL Have you tried rollersetting to see what the length currently is? I alternate between ponytail and rollers. One week I leave it in a ponytail, only wet the ends and moisterize. Another week I rollerset on Sunday and wear my hair dry for 6 days until I wet it again. I do it mostly to give my hair a break and minimize heat usage. I would swear to God my hair wasn't growing, but then I do the rollerset and its easier for me to see how much its grown in a month. Plus it helps during the cold weather because I really don't want to walk around downtown Boston with wet hair.

Well I think the wavy part has to do with it always being in a pony tail. When I leave it down its usually after having my hair up for a bit so you are probably looking at the results of the pony tail. Anyhow, I bought the rollers today so wish me luck. This will be my new journey this week. I'm sure I'll never be an expert like you are. I know because I have some dominican relatives and they are awesome at roller-setting without a mirror. Its incredible and don't know how they do it but I will give it a try on Wednesday. I will post pictures of the results hehehe... and how long it took me (probably 10 hours the least) LMAO.

After a few tries I had it down pat. I've been doing my own rollers ever since. I'm 109 so that's a very long time rollersetting LOL (OK I FEEL 109 but that's another story).

Like everything else, practice makes perfect. Try it in front of a mirror until you get the hang of it. I can do it with my eyes closed, one hand tied behind my back.
