Unhappy Help! Hair in distress!

Help!
Trying to gracefully grow out Matrix OptiSmooth Cold Smoothing process. I am currently battling the new growth bulk under the straighter curls/processed hair. I hate it so much that I have considered chopping it all off BUT I do not have the guts to do it. I have about two inches of new growth in my slightly above shoulder length hair. My natural curls are 3b with some slight 3c tedencies. I just need help with the transition. I am currently using DevaCurl and I'm not liking the results. My hair looks dull and dry. The curl definition is gone. It's not frizzy but my hair just looks like one big piece of hair. I have to redo my hair everyday. I never had to do that before (even pre-straightener). So any or all suggestions are welcome. I miss my curls and I was stupid for straightening them....I am now paying for it. Please help.

Hi Curly Sunshine,
I'm still transitioning as well and I have about the same amount of new growth as you do. Going natural w/ relaxed hair is definately a task but you can do it. Heck I am. Now it takes more time and working with but it can be done. Currently I use: Nextimage Curl & Wavy Curl Defining Conditioner & Detangler for Human & Synthetic Hair w/ Joba oil, Shea Butter and Vitimin E. I absolutely love this stuff and it can be bought at the TexasBeautySupply online store. I wash and condition my hair then I apply the NI and scrunch to death. Make sure you use a microfiber towel too, cuts down on frizzy hair and dries quicker too. It's about the only thing that works for me right now w/o breaking the wallet. If I want a more firm curl I use Herbal Essence Totally Twisted Gel too. I don't shampoo anymore either seems like the curls do better. Good luck.

Default Feelin' for you, Curly Sunshine...

Curly Sunshine -

Don't be discouraged and don't beat yourself up. I, too, am paying for damaging my hair with relaxers. (My last was Nov '07, so I have a few inches of new healthy growth.)

I've only been on this site for several weeks, and I've read about so many frustrated curlies, so please know YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

You may have to try different products before you find the right one for you. I would start with those specifically for damaged hair. There are some inexpensive ones out there (like Suave and Sunsilk), so you might not need to break your budget. Hopefully you'll find something that will avoid having to cut it all off!

Default Love your hair, Auburn!!!

Auburn Sunset -

I checked out your pix. Love your curls (and the color)! My hair is somewhere around a 3B-3C.

I might have to wait a few years (can't stand the wait!) after the relaxer is all gone, but if it ends up looking anything like yours, I'd be so haapppeeeee!

Thanks for sharing!

Default Thank you!

Thank you ladies for your encouraging words and suggestions. Auburn- Luvin the hair!

I think I need to come to terms with the fact that my Pre-straightner- wash and go routine is over. At least until all this fried-straightened mess is gone.

Today I dedicated more time to my hair and it looks decent. I also figured out which Devacurl product just doesn't work for me. I didn't use BeeLeave In and my hair looks much better. I even got a few compliments at work today.

Anyway, I wanted to share my thoughts on DevaCurl after trying it. Not all products work the same for everyone but my opinion may help, so here goes.....
No Poo- I like the way it makes my scalp tingle and I like that it leaves my hair soft.
One Conditioner- It's good. But I don't think that it's that much better than a Herbal Essences or Garnier Fructice.
BeeLeave In- Not for me. Made my hair feel rough, dry and killed my curl definition.
Set It free- Love it! Smells great and made my hair shiny and soft. BUT- I only discovered this by using it before the Angell gel and not after like it is recommended on the bottle. Go figure!
Angell Gel- It's ok. My hair needs a bit more weight and hold though. It gets me through one day. Next day I have to rewet, condition and use it again. Unlike with other products that I would get two or three days without rewetting or washing.
Overall I rate DevaCurl 3 out of 5 stars. Personally, I think I'm better off with less espensive products that work pretty much just the same or a bit better. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind spending the money if a products really works. I just don't feel I got my money's worth with DevaCurl. So, I'm running out of the Devacurl....what should I pick up next????

Default Hey Auburn.....

Where is your relaxed hair? I don't see it..... your ends curl and your hair looks great all over. Wish I had your problems. LOL
My ends curl but I have to try hard, very hard. Sometimes, some of my ends decide they just want to be straight and stick out. LOL I absolutly hate it...you gotta see it. Maybe I'll post some pictures of when it does that so you guys can have a laugh on me.

I have to say, misery loves company and sharing on this forum sure makes my hair nightmares easier to deal with. Thanks again ladies!

Prior to my BC, I would rinse my hair in the morning and scrunch with gel to get a curly look.

This is an old picture from my last transition.

Of course, my hair is alot shorter than yours but when I had longer hair I would dry with a diffuser to help tap the curls in.

Auburn Sunset your hair is gorgeous!!!

Hi Auburn sunset; your signature photos look great but I can't seem to access your kodak page and fotki is empty. I'm transitioning; 2 months in so far and excited but intimidated by the road ahead. Hoping to get some inspiration and support from a couple of these forums. I'm happy I've found you all!
