Do you HAVE to BC?

It took my almost 2 years to get my hair back close to regular length. Can I just cut the relaxer out bit by bit? [I assume that would take awhile]

^That was when I didn't have a relaxer for about a year and some months.

You don't have to. Some people do a little at a time and others cut if all off at once. You have to do what's most comfortable for you. Short hair can be a very emotional experience and not everyone likes how they look with it. You do need to find something so your straight hair will look healthy and moisturized while growing out.

Yes, you can gradually cut the relaxer out. I'm not going to BC. I'm 9 months into my transition and I'm not going to cut or trim anytime soon. As long as I detangle in the shower under running water with conditioner in my hair, I'm ok.
If your hair is healthy and not breaking off at the transition point and you keep new growth and relaxed bits well moisturized and conditioned you can cut it off in stages.

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.
I transitioned for 18 months. I thought I could go longer but I just couldn't stand it. I hadn't had short hair in over 15 years so it was difficult for me. But you know what? It's 5 years later and I have long hair again! So, try for as long as you can go to transition but don't suffer longer than you need to.

The big chop is a very big step. Just do what make you feel good and beautiful. I did mines all the way down and got it over with so I can start new. Good luck on your journey.

I cut mine after 10 months because I was so afraid of hindering the growth process. Plus I know how I am, I love long hair and I didn't want to fall in love with the length. My sister transitioned my 6 yr old niece (yes that young) and she had it cut gradually every 3 months for 2 yrs. She basically had the same length for 2 yrs because my sister only cut whatever the new growth was. Maybe that'll work for you.
