Best way to grow out after the big chop?

For the last couple of years, I've been playing with the idea of going natural. I finally did it. I cut all the perm off and now I'm stuck with a short fro (still don't know how I feel about that). I think I'm a 4a and when my hair is stretched I've got about 3". Other than braids (because the Africans are killing my edges) what's the best way to grow my hair out? I was thinking maybe I could alternate between a wig and braids, just to let my hair rest. Any advice?

Yes, leave the braid alone if they are too tight because growing back your edges is a very slow process. A wig, maybe. Last week, I was in a beauty suppy store and discovered these nice half wigs which seems to be very popular in my area. Just go try a few on and let me know what you think.
