Fighting the urge to BC! ...but why?

Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and I suppose this is my first real post.

Anywho, I've been transitioning since the end of March '08 and in the beginning I decided to BC after a year of transitioning. At some point, I got it in my head that I should wait until August or so, maybe to give new growth a year and a half. I think I've changed my BC date depending on what others usually set as theirs and 12, 18, and 24 months seem to be most popular. Recently I've been itching to just go ahead and start chopping, but I don't want to do anything impulsive.

For those of you who transitioned for a set period of time, did you ever get the urge to chop before that date? If you gave into the urge, what was the deciding factor? Just sick of transitioning, sick of two different textures, ready for the "new you", or on impulse? Did you regret it (I usually don't read about too many who have...)? Or did you wish you had let your new hair grow out a little longer?

For those of you who transitioned (or are transitioning) for a set period of time, have gotten the urge to BC but didn't/haven't, what keeps you from doing it? Do you want a certain length before cutting, wanting to learn more about hair care first or you're nervous about BCing?

I'm not sure if I want to BC because its what I really want, or because I'm impatient (and I know this whole process does take patience!) or just because reading all the posts here makes me jealous I'm not 100% natural yet, lol! I just don't want to regret my decision. So how do you know what is right for you?

And I hope I didn't offend anyone with my reasoning, as I don't think one method is better than another. They are just the pros and cons of BCing or waiting that go through my own head.
Hello, Im new to this site as well. I let the perm in my hair grow out about 3-4 months then CHOP! Went from Hair a little longer than my shoulder to the short do! I was so afraid of my how my hair would react. BUT my stylist deep conditioned and my curls emerged! I love my natural curls I haven't seen them since I was 6. Good Luck hang in there.

I don't know if there is any set amount of time. I personally just made the decision and went with it but I did let me hair grow out about 4 mnths with no perm.
I'm sort of going through the same thing as you. My last relaxer was June 08, and I'm planning on transitioning until June 09, but I'm SO tempted to just do the BC now.

The thing that's keeping me from doing it is nervousness over what my natural hair will look like, as well as being nervous over having such short hair.
I transitioned for over a year but not on purpose. I got my last relaxer near the end of 2001 and started wearing microbraids, cornrows, weaves, etc because I was tired of sitting in the shop all day on Saturday for my new growth to barely get straight any way. In August of 2002 I decided that I wasn't going to get relaxers any more. I got trims and deep conditioned every 4 weeks from late 2001 to March or so of 2003 when I decided that I didn't care how long my hair was I was tired of the braids and all that.

My hair was just below my earlobes when I started to transtion and it was shoulder length when I got it blow dryed/flat ironed for the first time in August 2003. I never did a BC but at the time I thought my forehead and head was too big for short hair. If I could do it all over again I would have done the BC vs. wearing the braids because my scalp suffered.

I would say it depends on your comfort level with the length of your hair and knowing that you will have to baby your hair because of the two textures. Personally, the right time to do the BC is when you are tired of dealing with the two textures and/or when you are ready to see what your curls really look like.
Relaxer free since 12/2001...

Mostly 3c with 4a in the back.

Yup--except I broke. I was going to BC sometime early in 2009 (after transitioning 5+ months) but I broke and did it in 5 months exactly. I still have a few wispy bits left, but I'm going to finish BC in 09 and have those taken off as well.

I "just did it" because I'm RIDICULOUSLY impatient and I got really tired of dealing with two textures that needed two different kinds of care. I've never had short hair in my life but I'm always willing to try different looks, so it really wasn't that hard for me

I'm not nervous about BCing, I'm really looking forward to it because I just want to get it over with and I want to be free of my relaxed ends. Also, NC has tons of info and has helped me understand and appreciate all hair types.

Spring is just around the corner, by saying this over and over, keeps me in check!

my last realxer was 6/1/08. i at least want to make it through the winter before i bc...plus i signed up for the spring 09 chop off.

i'm so used to being able to manipulate my hair...and that's my main reason for a long term transition. i've never had my hair super short and i'm not sure how i'd react to it. my hair stops under my chin right now...and i'm hoping by the time i bc..my natural hair will be that length or just about.

either way...in the spring/summer....i'm done w/ this 2 texture ish....it's getting lame
Thanks for the replies! Wow, sometimes reading blogs or posts I feel as if people stick to their guns and make unwavering decisions about when they'll BC. I don't feel so alone.

Ok, I've decided I will at least wait until my edges fill in a little more (does anyone know how to fix this?) and I think I have a little of what everyone refers to as scab hair on the back right side, so I will wait until that grows out a bit. Then I will make a decision. I just want it to be healthy first, maybe that is best. The Spring 09 chop off sounds like something I may be interested in... Thanks! I'll check that out!

As far as being scared of short hair...I'm not sure how much it would bother me, personally. Most TWAs that I've seen look really good and I think most of you would probably look cute, too. I've never had short hair so maybe it would be a nice change. Not relying on long hair for beauty might be a good exercise in self-love anyway... sometimes I have to remind myself that hair isn't that serious. Buuut TWAs really are cute on most people...hmmm. I'll think about that...

If nothing else I think I am just being impatient. But yeah the two textures... so over it.
Well, I've been transitioning for well over 8 months now and it's getting annoying having these permed ends. I've been trimming regularly so now I'm half relaxed/half permed so it's harder to blend the two textures now because my relaxed hair is so bone straight that it doesn't curl at all, even in water and my natural hair is thicker (naturally and due to breakage). My poor hair can't really take much more and I hate how thin the ends look now.

Just like you I've had so many urges to BC and I was actually planning to this Thanksgiving but my mom absolutely refused for me to do it. And then I second guessed myself and decided I'd try and hold out until my anniversary in 3-4 months. Then for sure I'm BCing, whether my mom wants me to or not. I've never had short hair (in fact it's the shortest it has been, right now!) and that's my main reason for not BCing behind being apprehensive about my hair texture. My parents are nervous but my friends and boyfriend especially are right behind me and reminding me that it's just hair and it'll grow back, and they'll love me no matter how I look when I'm done
Hey everyone!~ I've BCed! Yay! (13 month transition)
Last Perm: March 23, 2008
BC: April 24, 2009

Goals: To learn how to style my hair and continue to grow it healthy and happy!
Hair type: 4b near the temples, 3c in the back/nape and 4a everywhere! Mostly coily-curly with medium-fine strands and medium thickness.

I'm into my 11th month now and while my hair was loose the temptation was so great... up until a couple of weeks ago when I got some kinky twists. So far, the best thing I've done during this whole transition. It keeps me from messing with my hair, from wasting products on it (pj anyone?), shorter showers, and I don't have to worry about styling it every day.
I'm scared when I have to take them out I'm gonna see all this growth and to the relaxed ends be like, "You! Off!"
I'm holding out until April to chop though. Definitely. I've gotten this far, I can get through a couple more months.

i am 8+ months into my transition and i don't ever want to BC. i am going to transition for at least 20 months..but most likely more. whenever i hit past BSL stretched (natural), i will actively begin to trim the remaining relaxed ends off little by little. it sounds shallow but i just can't do short hair (MY HEAD IS TOO BIG LOL). my natural hair is growing pretty quick so we'll see what happens. but when i am 100% natural, i want my hair to be LONG as well.

I think I'm in the same boat as you, nettabelle. I'm anxious to cut my hair, but i'm not sure what length I would be working with. I've only been transitioning for 3 months, so I know that i would have a very very TWA.

IMO(learnt this on this site) it's what you can handle. I can't remember ever having short hair, and if i did, my mother would have been the one doing it. That's one reason i havent done a BC - i want my hair to be a length that I can twist or plait.

At the moment, I have corn row braids, but i'm going to unplait them on Saturday and do some corkscrews. I want to alternate between cornrows, kinky twists and corkscrews. I will cut off the straightened hair bit by bit.

I'm hoping to last until August 2009, but I'm impatient. I like to look at fotkis to get an idea of how much hair i might have. I even went back to my baby pictures to get an idea of my texture too.

I live in Barbados and there are lots of naturals here, and more and more people are growing locks. Many people have chosen to embrace and love their natural hair and work with it. And from what I see, natural hair is so versatile and the styling possibilities are endless.

This site is fabulous and the advice is always positive and educational. Through my reading, I have never seen a negative or condescending approach given to anyone. It is definitely a great support system.

I've seen them at that long and it was fine. I guess I'm more concerned about what it will be like on ME. Everyone else is cute though, haha.

I do this, too...but it also might not be a good idea. For the baby pictures, I think my hair is different. I had fatter and looser curls and when I cut off tiny sections just to preview (do you do this too? lol) It doesn't look the same. But my biggest problem is the fotki...because I will see 3 girls with hair texture that I recognize as my own but when I look at them all together, they're super different from each other! Looking is still fun but I'm scared to get attached to the idea of a particular texture only to be annoyed that my hair doesn't end up the same. Be careful...make sure you love your own first. If that makes sense...

Also, I am more than likely moving to Antigua in August... I know its not the same island but are the products you use readily available in the Caribbean or do you do a lot of ordering online? I hope Antigua is like Barbados in that there are a lot of people embracing their natural hair! August might be my BC month too if I don't do it with the spring '09 chop off (considering...) because its my birthday month, I'll graduate, and I'm moving...nice fresh start.
I'm not sure what Antigua's hair scene is like, but it seems as there is a more "easy going" attitude toward natural hair through out the Caribbean than in previous years. People in "high places" are embracing the natural thing like crazy, so it's not really a big deal anymore. However, you will still have naysayers going off.

We have a couple health food stores and beauty stores that carry loads of natural products and I'm thinking that Antigua should be the same. If you can get your friends to send you stuff tho, that would be advisable because shipping WILL break your pocket - i tried to order an 8 oz jar of a very popular product that cost $22US and the shipping quoted was $70 US!!!

I always loved my hair but it was ridiculously thick and I wanted a change. I thought that relaxed hair would have been a bit easier to manage. Well I got a big rock when I relaxed my hair and realised that i couldnt go to the beach and let my hair soak up the salt water.

So I'm looking forward to my thick, poofy, healthy, natural hair.

I've never transitioned before, I lack patience (FACT). When I graduated from high school, I went on a cruise and two weeks after I came back I had my hairdresser shave it all off (I actually cut a huge chunk out of the front so that she couldn't refuse me). Since then I've been letting it grow back and then getting it chopped every summer (because I kept forgetting that relaxers are BAD). Everytime I've done a BC it was spontaneous and for me that worked because it gives me a chance to learn my hair's likes and dislikes, different styles, etc. before it's too big to train so to speak. Good luck with the wait though. How long is it now?

someone may have said this. i didn't read it all. i have a friend who has been regularly trimming her hair as her hair grows out so that she doesn't have to wait 12 months to cut off her relaxed ends. she's doing it gradually which makes more sense to me and is more subtle.
