I wouldn't call it a relapse. I consider myself modified CG because I believe sulfates and silicones are like sweets- bad in excess, but harmless in small doses. CG is not about a hard and fast set of rules, but about learning to listen to what your hair likes.
When I first started, I found that co-washing alone didn't work, so like a good CGer, I bought a sulfate-free low-poo. And hated it. I found that most low-poos left my hair feeling stripped. So I decided to try a gentle sulfate shampoo. And it left my hair feeling much softer, so I rotate it in about once a week. Since I already know I'm using a sulfate shampoo, I will sometimes use a product with cones- not everyday, but once in a while.
I found that I need to use a very light conditioner for co-washing. I normally stick to formulas labeled clarifying and I make sure I'm using lots of agitation on scalp and roots. That helped with the gunky feeling. Frizz can take a little more work because there are a lot of possible causes. But don't be afraid to keep experimenting. If something isn't working for you then try something else. It doesn't matter if everyone else swears by it (example- I absolutely HATED Suave coconut). Finding what works for you can take time, but the results will be worth it.
