Suave Naturals trials
I've been trying different conditioners and I thought my findings might interest someone. Suave Naturals Coconut and Suave Naturals Strawberry conditioners make my hair significantly straighter. So I tried several other conditioners and narrowed the problem ingredient to Distearyldimonium Chloride. I know now to avoid Distearyldimonium Chloride if I want my hair at its curliest!
FYI, here are the surfactants used in Suave conditioners:
Cetrimonium Chloride & Distearyldimonium Chloride:
Suave Naturals Aloe & Waterlily
Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut
Suave Naturals Pomegranate Splash
Suave Naturals Wild Cherry Blossom
Suave Naturals Fresh Mountain Strawberry
Centrimonium Chloride & Distearyldimonium Chloride:
Suave Naturals Juicy Green Apple
Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine:
Suave Naturals Ocean Breeze
Suave Naturals Refreshing Waterfall Mist
Suave Naturals Mango Mandarin
Suave Naturals Everlasting Sunshine
Suave Naturals Soothing Lavender Lilac
Suave Naturals Sweet Pea & Violet
So if your hair hasn't liked Suave, you may have better luck using a different "flavor".

Wow.
I was wondering why my curls were looser with the coconut suave than and the sweat pea or the ever lasting shine line.
Wow thank you for breaking it down.

So you think it's definitely the Distearyldimonium Chloride and not the Cetrimonium/Centrimonium Chloride that makes your hair straighter?

I switched conditioners for a week (was using Suave Naturals Coconut) and my curl pattern loosened. I returned to the Suave. :-)
*Garnier Pure Clean conditioner loosened my curl pattern. Suave tightened my curls back up. :-)

I too, noticed my hair had gotten straighter with Suave Sun-Ripened Strawberry, which has distearyldimonium chloride. So should I use the conditioners on the last list with the diethalamine (sp?)? Would that make my hair curlier or at least how it should be?

Green Apple
Earthnuts,
This is so interesting to me. I always knew the Juicy Green Apple left my hair the best and I knew the Coconut had protein, which I could use every once in a while.
I've tried to love some of the other flavors and just could not understand WHY I DIDN'T.
I was unable to breakdown the ingredients the way you did. You are a genius! Thank you so much for this post.

Dang. I didn't realize coconut had protein. I use it as a styler and that's probably why my hair has been dried a s straw like. Dang dang.
Now for a protein free one. Ugh.

Okay Im a little confused now. I searched my tropical coconut for protein based on Ingredients Commonly Found in Hair Care Products and do not see any protein.
I then searched for the Cetrimonium Chloride & Distearyldimonium Chloride and its not in my ingredient list. Am I missing something?????

Btw, the tropical coconut contains potassium chloride, and none of the others.

I tried other conditioners that had Cetrimonium/Centrimonium Chloride without the Distearyldimonium Chloride and they did not make my hair straighter. YMMV certainly, everyone's hair is different.

I noticed this too! Where I live, the newer bottles (formulations) don't have any chlorides but potassium chloride. Only the small (older?) bottles have the chlorides mentioned above....

I looked at online ingredient lists. I didn't include Potassium Chloride because it's not a conditioning agent like the other chlorides and ALL the Suave Naturals have it. But the big bottle formulation must contain some kind of conditioning agent! All the ingredient lists online indicate that Coconut contains all 3 chlorides. Either the online list or the label must be wrong.

I think the online lost includes a universal ingredients list. The bottles I find must be the variety in my region, that's the only solution I can think of, cuz ur right, the online lists, don't show the current formula I use?
