why would going cg cause my hair to straighten?

I've been cg for several weeks now. using suave clarifying conditioner as my cowash, rinse out and
leave in. my scalp is a little itchy but not bad. my
hair has SIGNIFICANTLY less frizz but it just lays in
loose waves and the curl is basically gone. before it was wavy/curly but it had lots of frizz and undefined
curls(looked a mess)..so while cg has taken away the frizz, its also just left me with very loose waves on the bottom and straight hair from the ears up...not altogether a bad look, but just wondering what might be causing going cg to make me lose my curl. i thought cg was supp to help make a tighter curl with less frizz? anybody?
2c i'm guessing, though i can get it to look 3a...coarse,dense,low porosity hair thats never been colored or touched by any heat so it is pretty healthy.

Is it possible you need protein? I don't see any in that conditioner and my hair loses major curl if I don't use any protein at all. (But I have to use only certain proteins when I do use them). As always, ymmv.

Weighed down by too much conditioner, or too heavy of conditioners?

it might be i'm needing protein. i bought a sample packet of ion at sallys that has protein in it. i will give that a try.i really didn't have the problem before cg though.

it could be the conditioner..i only use suave naturals conditioner so i'm not sure how to go any "lighter".

Yeah. I think you should check of you need protein. Also, I noticed that with certain conditioners, like Suave, my hair feels kind of limp and straighter than it usually is.

Have you tried using something else as a LI? or tried no LI at all? I've seen pics of people after doing a PT and wow, the results are stunning so I hope you have lots of success with your treatment!

IAgal 09-26-2012 08:28 AM

i haven't tried anything else as a LI yet.might be best to try no LI first if i'm overconditioned.

i bought the protein pack...now....do i wet my hair, apply it and let it sit on my hair(for how long?)
then do i cowash? i always assumed since i had coarse thick hair that i didn't need protein so i'm not sure how to use it....or should i just cowash like usual and then apply the protein pack, let it sit for a while and then rinse out. i think the ion protein pack i picked up is pretty moisturizing too if i remember from the ingredients.

thanks!

i'm also thinking about trying a sulfate free shampoo instead of cowashing to see if that helps. i've been looking at jessicurl gentle lather shampoo..its about the only one i can find that has no oils, silicone or protein(which,if my hair likes protein i wouldn't necessarily need to watch out for)....anyone like that?

I used that pack a couple days ago and I also have coarse thick hair and stay away from protein. I used a clarifying shampoo (Suave Daily Clarifying, but I like your idea/choice of shampoo better) first and then put in the treatment, left it in several minutes and then did a 20 min. deep conditioning. I might have done it wrong though, but I went with the instructions to use it after a shampoo and the only reason I did the DT was because I was afraid of the protein drying my hair out. Sadly, the treatment did nothing for me but I do hope it works for you! Maybe my mistake was doing the dt or in the shampoo I chose, I don't know.

txwvy32,why did you use a clarifying shampoo before doing the protein treatment? i didn't know we need to clarify first so i'd better do that instead of cowash first. if i end up getting the jessicurl i won't wait for it first before i try the protein pack. i prob won't do a DT after the PT unless my hair feels dry...i think.... :)

I found the HCC to be a little too heavy. I like some lather, so the low poo is nice.

L'Oreal Ever - is sulfate free.

it could just be that that particular conditioner does not agree with your hair, or you might need to alternate. you won't find too many people here who do the same thing every day.

IAgal 09-27-2012 11:15 AM

well the protein treatment was a big fail! my hair feels like straw or as coarse as a horse's mane :(

Ml001 09-27-2012 11:24 AM

DT. Now.

From what I can tell, the only protein my hair can tolerate is AVG. I mix it with conditioner and apply it for half an hour (though I do think I need to adjust that timing a bit). It perked my hair right up and it's been great ever since. My daily products are all protein free. (Except the DCNoPoo and I use that sparingly and infrequently.)

For you, it could be that it was not protein after all, or it could be the one you used was not the right type for you, or it was just too much. Many people (me included) call this a hair 'journey' but many times it is more like a ride on a roller coaster!!!

IAgal 09-27-2012 07:18 PM

i don't really have anything laying around to use as a DT.i normally am quick to get overconditioned so i have just a light conditioner....any suggestions for a good DT I could pick up?
I did try some oil earlier when i got home...big mistake and i knew it....oil usually makes me looks greasy cuz it doesn't absorb in for me,but all it did was make my hair look/feel even dryer and more strawlike. seems like everything i've been doing to my hair lately has made it worse.
yes,i guess it could just have been too much protein or the wrong kind. you are so right mi001...its like a roller coaster.just when i think i have one thing figured out i then have to try to figure out more!

Ml001 09-28-2012 02:15 PM

I am not sure on a good DT. In the past I have used Suave but I know some have protein so you'd have to check ingredients. To get it done with what you have on hand you could rinse hair very well with very warm water for several minutes to open the cuticles, apply conditioner, place a shower cap over your hair and let warm water run over the cap for several minutes, then rinse in warm water and apply LI while still in shower. This is how I do my conditioner every day now but it is sort of a mini DT. Might help at least a little under the circumstances until you find a thicker DT conditioner.

You can also do all steps up to running water over the shower cap - instead of running water, apply a hot towel over the cap and cover with another cap or plastic bag. This helps seal in the warmth. Keep this on for half an hour or so then rinse with warm water.

Please be careful to not over-condition now as you figure out your protein-moisture balance. *sigh*

For a good DT you can try mixing conditioner, honey, and olive oil.
