Giving CG a try!
I have shoulder length 3A hair and I need help! I recently (last week) got a fresh DevaCurl cut (have been going to the same girl for the past 3 cut's) so I'm starting fresh :).
I feel like I never know what my hair is going to look like because one day I could have really nice, soft, bouncy, curls and the next day it could be a mess ending with me just putting it in a bun on the top of my head. I've been using Prairie Naturals shampoo and conditioner, DevaCurl Set it Free (as like a leave in sort of.. I spray it in before I diffuse and it makes it somewhat less frizzy), and DevaCurl Angel (the light gel). Then I diffuse until it's 75% (ish) dry, put duck clips in, let it air dry 30 mins until I get ready, take clips out, and then shake upside down and scrunch gel out. More often than not, I end up playing with it so much that it ends up looking not so good,... AND I'm late to wherever I'm going. Not a good combo!
So... after looking into the baking soda and ACV method.. and then coming across the CG method.. I decided to go with the latter. I bought what I needed tonight and will be starting tomorrow.
Cowash - Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut
Rinse Out - Giovanni Smooth As Silk Cond
Leave In - Giovanni Direct Leave In
Style - will be trying DevaCurl Angel and AG recoil
Question: I read about additionally having to use a clarifying shampoo along with CG method... what would this be for?
Any tips or suggestions would be much appreciated!
You need to use a clarifying shampoo to remove any possible silicones (of which sulfates are the only thing that can remove the silicones). If you skip this step, you'll most likely end up with build-up. Basically it is giving you a "clean slate" to work with.
Ohh yes! I just forgot to include it in my list above because it was one I already had at home. Thx for the reminder!
Day 1 of CG
Washed my hair (for the last time) with Garnier Fructis sulphate shampoo -- ugh.. hair felt so gross and sticky after. Then I continued with products mentioned above for cowash, rinse out, and leave in.
With my head upside down, I raked through a dime size amount of AG Recoil, and then used a little more and scrunched it in. I fixed my part (carefully) and then squeezed out excess water with a tshirt.
I diffused using the pixie curl method starting upside down and then flipping over and doing the under sections, middle, and top.
When I was done I was surprised at how it looked - a lot less messy (i.e. more defined and clumpy) than normal yet still pretty full for still being damp and needing scrunching. The only thing I wasn't too sure on was it seemed a little too crunchy.. Maybe I used too much recoil? Even though I didn't have to go out today, I would have been able to wear it down (the front clipped back of course - I hate having it hanging in my face). So I guess ultimately day 1 was a success
Also, I know the pixie curl method for diffusing is supposed to create less frizz but would I get more volume if I just diffused normally? When you diffuse what do you usually do?
So I used a bottle of Garnier Fructis shampoo for my last shampoo and I just read the back and it has SLS (which I'm guessing is fine because it needs to be a sulphate based shampoo?)... But it also has dimethicone! Do I have to do my last wash again?? The only other poo I have is AG curl and it has dimethicone as well.
Didn't know that!!
Ok so I did some reading and clarifying shampoo can have sulphates..OR cocomidopropyl betain.. didn't know that! The Prairie Naturals I've been using all along is perfect then! So I guess today is officially day 1 :).
I used DevaCurl Angel this morning instead of the AG ReCoil and before diffusing I twirled a bunch of the top pieces... much better than yesterday! It's not 100% dry yet but it's looking good :).
I've noticed a lot of people using LA sports gel. I'm in Canada and haven't come across this anywhere. We have Dippity Do (think that's the name) which is similar in price but I'm scared to try it. As a side note, i also found the Suave coconut cond really hard to find (took me 3 drugstores!). Any other Canadians on here?? What gel do you prefer?
curlyj88 - I'm also a fellow canadian! I'm ashamed to say ive only ever used dippity do in my curly hair, lol. i think the LA sports gel is the American equivalent. The trick to using dippity do is to not clump a large amount into one spot, but use small amounts at once so it doesnt get clumpy and greasy. i put it in my hair wet and turn my head upside down and scrunch. It's really the only styling products that holds my curls lol.
