I just wanted to add that I saw PJsMom on another thread (what has work remove dandruff) mention a product called Optium Care Daily Flake Control.

Here are the ingredients: Acitive ingredient: Pyrithone zinc 0.1%. Inactive ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Carbomer, Tragrance, Sodium, Methyparaben, Triethanolamine, Polysorbate20, and others

I think it's meant to be used between shampoos but it looks curly girl to me and has pyrithone zinc in it.

I hope those work for you. I have co washing with a H&S conditioner which has been working for me.

Would you mind sharing which of these you use? I can't seem to find a non-'coney one.

That will be because they all have cones in them hun. Which means if you do the washing with it you will be Mod-CG.

As soon as the build up apears I wash with H&S no more than once a week though. I dont find that my curls are effected either. I still use all my CG products though.

Becci,

I have the exact same problem. I used to have this before even when I used Shampoo and I've been doing CG for a couple weeks now. I have a really itchy scalp and when I scratch white gunk is under my nails. I'm waiting to go home and low-poo with GTTT shampoo as well as the conditioner and see what happens. I'm hoping it will take care of this problem somewhat. I have the exact opposite of an oily scalp..I have a very dry scalp and no amount of scrubbing gets the stuff out. I will try the GTTT and let you know how it turns out.
We can help each other get through this!

For you ladies about to try GTTTT, if you use the conditioner for co-washing, it's thicker than a lot of conditioners and is hard to get out of those little flat bottles. I find that if I wet my hair real well and then manage to get out about a half dollar size dollop - about 1.5" across for you in the UK - start working it into the scalp, adding a little more water if needed, in a moment it gets pretty malleable so that I can give my scalp a good scrubbing with it. Let it sit on your scalp for a few minutes if you can, for best results.

It would be difficult to even get out the handsful often used of more common co-washing conditioners.

If you find you like it, it's worth seeking out the larger pump bottles of Giovanni. They're a lot easier to manage because those smaller flat ones make it hard to get the product out and the tops are near impossible to get off.

I've been reading this thread because I have this icky scalp problem too! I've always used H&S 1-3 times a week depending on my scalp. I find that getting away from my hard water does help so I'm going to look into filters. Anyway... here is a link to the Mayo Clinic that I think describes what most of us are experiencing. Hit the next button at the bottom of the paragraph to keep reading.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/seb...atitis/DS00984

If I find more information on a CG way to treat I'll be back!

Question New here

I'm sorry but I am new here and I just wanted to ask what is this CG everyone is talking about and what is CO-washing?

I found this sight as I've been having trouble with the yucky build up and itchy scalp.

Thanks for all your info.

Visit the Newbies forum in Curl Talk, and you'll see a sticky that explains the CG method as well as many other things you'll hear about here, including abbreviations.

Hi Becci, you poor thing!
I am new at this CG thing and I am tired of the itching and white buildup too! I have been using a mild low poo, and alternate with a co-wash. I thought the white stuff under my nails was buildup so I clarified with a bad poo yesterday, still itched and had the white gunk, so I did it again today......I'm still so itchy - my scalp is crawling! As you can see in my sig that I'm not using cones, so I'm ready to see a doctor about this. I also tried Giavonni Tea Tree Poo thinking that it would help my scalp, but I was still itchy!
Let me know if you ever find relief and I will do the same!

I am a new to this cg and have been trying out the co-wash. I for sure stuggle with the build-up on my scalp and try to wash with the tips of fingers, still have that problem. I also am struggling with conditoners weighing down my hair. I am using Suave Coconut was for CO wash and Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose for a deep treatment. I was wash my hair about 1-2 times per week. Trying to find a good regiment. I have thin curly hair (used to have thick but have lost a ton of hair twin sister too, not sure if it is because we have diabetes), this cg stuff is hard at first!!!
Any advise would be so appreciated. Even for hair growth.
thanks curlies

I don't do cowashes on my scalp anymore. It doesn't clean my skin enough and the conditioner builds up and irritates my skin. I do better to water wash and then apply conditioner about two inches from my roots to the ends of my hair. Use the wavy hair method of washing, every other, or two days, I wash my scalp with a loo poo or even Suave shampoo. My skin needs to be clean.

I have/had this same thing, the dermatologist told me it was "seborrheic dermatitis".... there are rx shampoos that they gave me to use and they didn't work at all!! I'm now trying the no poo regimen and am really hopeful it will help!

I've been CG after a long process of growing out my Japanese relaxer, and I am so happy that I learned to love my natural hair and get compliments all the time.

However.... this is the one problem that I really need to solve. I have always had scalp problems and used various H&S or medicated shampoos depending on my mood... but have never really been satisfied especially in the winter.

The other day I was shopping for a new conditioner to get me through my last month abroad before returning back to the US where the products available for CG are endless... and found Palmer's Hair Food Formula (Anti-Dandruff) Hair and Scalp Conditioner.

I know that often these conditions are over-diagnosed, mislabeled as dandruff when it is actually dry scalp.. etc etc but is it possible that oils need to be occasionally ADDED to the scalp rather than build up being all the time scrubbed and stripped off? I tried using this product and it was a huge relief but I didn't wash it out properly and my hair was very oily. If this continues to work and I can find a way to wash it out that is still curly girl.... then I'm going to give this a shot for a while. Has anybody tried these adding oil to the scalp relief treatments? This is a problem I want to find the solution too, since it seems common for us curly girls to have dry scalp and build up!

The ingredients are:
Minarel Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), Paraffin, Lanolin,Coconut Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D), Cocoyl Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Propylparaben, Fragrance(Parfum), D&CYellow #11.

I see there are proteins in this.... I don't really remember what the protein issue was exactly.. my head is fried from trying to be a curly hair scientist!!!

I'm curious did u ever solve the gunky issue?
My scalp gets that way mainly in the summer.
It's sebum to my knowledge but if it gets too crazy
I use nature's gate jojoba because of jojoba's acidity it
gets the oil off. But it does have sulfates. For a good non
sulfate one Beauy with Cruelty Rosemary Mint works well.
I can go about 6 days without the gunk and 4 days without the itch.
I would REALLY suggest a shower filter. I have one and it has
made a big difference in the sore scalp. It may also be a yeast
overgrowth on the scalp or seborrheic dermatitis.
As someone else suggested chagrin valley helped me I always
keep the rosemary mint shampoo bar on hand and dc or acv afterward.
Hope something in there helped.

Default me too

I have this exact problem and it's chronic. I don't get itchies, but I 'll wash my hair/ cowash today but usually low poo or water wash and put in my stylers and after its' dry , if I get a little itch , white flakes come up. And just like someone else mentioned, it's mainly in my crown area, the sides don't do that. I almost always have this and it worries me that I"ll be suffocating my new baby hairs and go bald from this. Also, I shed a lot and I wonder if it's from this. I don't know what else to do. I would love to hear from the person who said they've cut out on a lot o f products. I would like to know what they use and how they manage and define their curls, going without a lot of products. thanks

Ive had this problem forever. I get the white stuff under my nails, ive even had the blood and scabs on my scalp. I actually dont co wash because it causes my face to break out. I use kc come clean with pretty good results. My fix for the itchy gunk has been jojoba oil. Ive read that its the closest thing to the natural sebum we produce naturally. I dont know how or why it works, but when i do nightly scalp massages with it, the itch and gunk dissappear. Sometimes i forget but even doing it 2-3 times between washes helps A LOT. Obviously when its been a week since i washed or if ive been sweating a lot the itch is unbearable but the jojoba has helped tremendously. Just a few drops and a quick massage does wonders for my scalp. Hth!

At least I don't feel alone. Thanks for sharing. ANd you don't find you have hair loss because of this? I will try the jojoba oil. It's hard for me to oil the scalp, because my hair is coarse, and it's hard to get movement through to all parts of my scalp. Any tips for that? Also, do you do that before shampooing, or after???
