Letter from Lorraine

Lorraine Massey

Lorraine Massey, author and curl advocate

I wrote "Curly Girl" with much hesitation. I wondered, "who am I to write a book for the curlies of the world? I am just a crazy-for-curls hairdresser!!" I had one colleague ask me what I could possibly say about curls. One hundred and fifty pages later, the first printing of "Curly Girl" was published in January 2002 with 25,000 copies.

Five years and hundreds of thousands of copies later, it's a different world. The lives of countless curlies have been changed by "Curly Girl." The first book was a CURLformation for me and the rest of the world, taking on the needs of an unaddressed and misunderstood hair type. The curl-weary are learning to love their curls.

Many curlies find "Curly Girl." to be a valuable guide for caring for curly hair.

But it seemed like curlies wanted even more information to address the wants, fears, needs and desires surrounding their hair. That's why I decided to write "Curly Girl 2." The sequel will be as natural as your curls! It will be written by all of you, metorphoriCURLy speaking!

I am looking for three more curlies to add to my new book. That's why I've launched the Deva Curly Girl Challenge on NaturallyCurly.com. So get with the program, do the Deva Three-Step and put your best curl story forward. I'm looking for young and mature, men and women, wavy, curly and kinky. Share your curl truths. Perhaps enter someone who needs an interCURLvention. I hope you have fun and come to appreciate that your curls are a wonderful part of your life!!

Join the fun! Tell us why you deserve to win the Deva Curly Girl Challenge. First 50 people to enter receive a Deva Curly Girl t-shirt.

Do the 3-Step challenge to perfect curls and share your stories. Take as much or as little time as you need to try it out. This challenge is not about who does it fastest or longest. We encourage you to try the products and share your results. If you have already been using Deva products, you are also welcome to join this challenge.

Step 1: Cleanse

Wet hair thoroughly. Evenly distribute a palm-full of No-Poo cleanser between both hands and distribute to scalp using a circular massaging motion. Rinse. (Low Poo is an option if you prefer.)

Step 2: Hydrate

Evenly distribute a palm-full of One Condition between both hands. Gently glide product through the ends and work toward the scalp with fingers. Rinse.

Step 3: Scrunch & Style

With your head tilted forward, scrunch the excess water from the hair with a paper towel. Apply a generous amount of lightweight curl defining AnGell to the palms of your hands and apply to curls in an upward scrunching motion towards the scalp to encourage and cultivate the curls. Then, bring your head to an upright position and let the curls fall naturally.

Q & A with Deva

  • Question
  • How do I set my curls?
  • Answer
  • Remove excess water from hair by scrunching gently in an upward springing motion with a t-shirt or paper towel. Using stylers is a very important step as they provide additional moisture while defining the curls. Product usage is determined by hair thickness, length and your dehydration level. Evenly distribute a palm-full of your choice of stylers between both hands. Tilt head forward, scrunch hair, using an upward spring motion toward the scalp to cultivate curls. Allow curls to dry naturally or diffuse dry with the DevaFuser. We recommend using more (rather than less) product, as most hair requires the extra moisture and curl definition that specific stylers deliver.
