Month 3

This is my 3rd month and things are going smoothly still.  My favorite transition is the flat two strand twist for simplicity and rod set for low manipulation.  I am trying my first bantu knots for next week.  Now that my new growth is longer, I can feel the different textures in my hair.  I will be tweaking my routine by changing my current shampoo to a silcone-free shampoo.  For my 2 week Christmas break from work I'll be leaving in two strand twist during that time.  I am now taking biotin every other day.  Now that my hair styling and routine is down, I want to focus more on eating healthier and finding peace.

My roots

My new growth is steadily growing strong.  I love to feel the waves of my roots.  My staple transition styles currently are perm rods and flat twist.  I like these because it hides the two textures for me.

Today I deep conditioned with my essential oils.  I think during the winter months I will need to dc twice a month.  I bought biotin and will be taking it every other day beginning today to see if it will give me healthier hair and skin.  I am rod setting my hair again.

For Thanksgiving I rocked a curl-hawk for the first time.

No Dandruff

To my surprise I have not had any dandruff in the last 2 months of transitioning.  I've had folliculitis and recurrent dandruff for over 10 years.  I previously used a prescribed antibiotic topical solution for my folliculitis. The itching, burning, and miminal hair loss between the two appears to be over.  What I believe has helped me is washing my hair weekly and not using products with mineral oil and petroleum.  I always thought the creamy crack reduced the follicle problem as it became more irritating the longer I went until my next perm.  I tried several products to help with dandruff including, medicated products, castor oil, and light/heavy grease.  I wished I would have thought of this before.

Deep conditioning

Today I shampooed, conditioned, and trimmed my split ends.  I trimmed about 1 inch of my hair.  I deep conditioned my hair with a warm oil treatment and it is so super soft.  For my oil deep conditioner I used:
3 tbsp coconut oil,
1 tbsp avocado oil,
about 10 drops rosemary oil, and
about less than 1/4 cup water.

I left it on after saturating my scalp to ends for 1 hour with a cap on.  The oil was heated/steeped in a double boiler for about 30 minutes.  This is a definite treatment that I will do on a monthly basis.  I braided my hair and will be rocking a braid out this week.  If anyone has any other deep conditioner treatments please share.

My thoughts

As my new growth continues to come in I'm evaluating what I like most and least about the transition.  My hair is currently slightly past my shoulders and I have only about 1 inch of new growth.  So far what I enjoy about growing my hair out is styling it.  I previously wore my hair straight out of a wrap to make myself look older for my professional appearance.  I'm still in a professional setting, but now at 25 I'm not worried about how young/older I may or may not look.  Depending on the style I wake and don't have to spend anytime on my hair.  I also enjoy exploring different natural products.  In addition, I like focusing my mind on something else.  I treat this journey like a hobby.  Everyday I may either read up on natural hair, update my journal, or watch a YouTube video.

On the other 2 things that I like least about transitioning is the cost of natural products and worrying about breakage.  I prefer natural to eliminate excess build up in my scalp of pertroleum and mineral oils.  The upside is that many of the essential and carrier oils will last a long time depending on use.  The other least liked part of transitioning for me is worrying about breakage between the 2 textures.  I'm sure the least manipulation between protective styles will retain my length and growth.  Still excited about the journey!
