Barbie Syndrome

Its not so bad . . .

Here I am 4 months after my BigChop (BC).  Unlike many of my curly counterparts, I did not transition.  I waited the normal 6-8 weeks post a relaxer and decided "its got to GO!"

I have about 4 inches of new growth (longest curl when stretched).  My hair composite is a combination of 3C, 4A, and 4B in some places.

My mother has locs and has been growing them for 2 years.  My baby sister is completely natural at the age of 8.  My younger sister, 3 years my junior, is long and lovely and, YES still relaxed (her choice).  Love her to death and always will. . . but, I was tired of the chemical burns, tired of the $70/biweekly, tired of 4 hours lost each Saturday, and tired of not being true to myself.  I realized that when my hair was relaxed, throughout middle and highschool, even into college, I consistently wore spiral curls/rod sets (less maintenance) and the look appealed to me.  So, why not keep it that way--FOREVER!?

So, I did some research . . .I pulled all my baby pictures (pre-Sodium Hydroxide); checked out my mom's texture and washed my baby sister's hair a few times.  And, WAH-LA! 129 days later, I have 3C-4B curls that I'm loving and are easier to manage than I would have ever imagined.

I have received far more compliments than "hate-mail" from loved ones, family members, friends and even co-workers.  So, as the old saying goes, "I can do bad all by myself . . ." I'm really not doing that bad afterall.

P.S. Pictures to follow shortly . . .

  • At the age of 22 I've discovered the beauty that accompanies rockin' natural curls. My parents divorced when I was 4, my father won custody of my sister and I. Tired of two heads of curls, we soon met our match-sodium hydroxide. 7/15/09 I BC'ed.
