Confessions of a Tired Transitioner
posted on Dec 1, 2009 by atx_eve
![]() Don't get me wrong. New protective styles are fun. I love not having to style my hair every 3 days. I appreciate the protection from Austin's crazy winter/rain season. But why do I already miss my hair after only 1 week of having these twists in?!?!?!? *heavy sigh* In earlier videos/posts, I said I have been transitioning since late november. That was just a rough guess, hahaha. I'm not sure whether it's been 11 or 12 months. *gasp* A FULL YEAR ALREADY?!?!? Who woulda thunk it? But yeah, this is my last two months on the FENCE. In 8 weeks, when i take these bad boys out....PRESTO: the big chop! I cannot wait. As odd as it sounds, i wasn't exactly having a good hair day today. Well not MY hair exactly, but, just....you know what i'm trying to say, right? Sometimes you just wish you had cut it already. This week on the Grow Out Challenge is my complain week! YAY! Here are a list of the cons MY long transition. 1. MY SCALP ITCHES ALL THE TIME! I guess since more of my scalp is exposed to the air, i dunno. I tried oils, sprays, "grease"....I just end up dousing my head with water and shampoo. 2. THINNING EDGES! You "extra textured" ladies know that the edges of the temples have the finest and most sensitive hair. Braids and other tight protective styles can cause hair loss. Mine are so weird: left side is fine, but right side....could use some work. CAN YOU SAY ASYMMETRICAL?!? 3. WASHING CONFUSION. After a year of transitioning, i still don't know how to maintain braids or kinky twists. This goes along with my itchy scalp problem: how often do i wash it? with what? using which techniques? Uggghhhh. This has caused many a "lemme just cut it all off" moments (see previous blog posts) 4. NO PJs ALLOWED. I can't use the same products on these twists as i could with my own hair. Product Junky DENIED. hahaha. Heavy creams, deep conditioners, etc could cause product buildup at the anchor of the twists (where my hair meets the extensions). 5. I JUST MISS MY HAIR, OKAY?!?! Sheesh. Playing in it. Washing it whenever i want to. Sticking random flowers in it. Making fro-hawks. All of it. When i pay for convenience, I miss out on the variety. REMEMBER TO WATCH THIS WEEK'S GROW OUT CHALLENGE VIDEO! Located on the sidebar of the Challenge's homepage :) Thanks, and happy growing -evelyn |
KINKY TWISTS! YESSS!
posted on Nov 24, 2009 by atx_eve
Check out the NEW TRANSITION STYLE:![]() I love these kinky twists! Like i said in my previous post, i'll keep these in for 8 weeks then BIG CHOP, ya digggg! I'm definitely gonna do a better job of taking care of them. The last time was.....a mini disaster, frankly. Below is a video of the whole process. *winces* I'm not quite sure how to prevent product from building up UNDERNEATH the knot/anchor where my real hair is attached to the extensions. I'll let ya know as soon as i figure out what to do. Which means as soon as i search NaturallyCurly.com (or Youtube) for awesome advice. But yeah, that's pretty much it. I just get to chill with this for 2 months and hopefully gain an inch (hopefully two) of growth. THAT.WOULD.BE.AWESOME. Cuz then it would actually be 6 inches in a year. YAY! Here's my NEWEST vlog about my friend Benedicta's big chop. It's always nice to hear others talk about their natural journey, right? Enjoy :) Have a blessed Thanksgiving! .....Unlucky for me, my last round of tests BEFORE finals is AFTER thanksgiving. Which means i have to study DURING the break. BUT NO ONE CAN COME BETWEEN ME AND MY TURKEY! AND UT PLAYS A&M THAT DAY. YEAH BUDDY! HOOK 'EM! happy growing, Evelyn |
BIG CHOP CLOSE CALL among other things.

HEY Y'ALL! It's been a while since i've posted a blog on here: i've been sick and tired. Literally. And the LAST thing i want to do when i can't breathe out of my nose or sleep peacefully is spend the time doing my hair (check out the video where i show my usual routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGXhPtNwExE). Needless to say, i've had several big chop close calls. In a fit of rage, exhaustion or...just plain boredom I've been thiiiiiis close to cutting my hair once and for all. It usually involved a mass text message to my closest friends threatening to "JUST DO IT!" But literally after 15 seconds, the hysteria calms down and put the scissors back in the drawer of my desk. I wouldn't want to regret anything i did, now would i? I want my big chop to be as glorious as i hear i should be. I gotta admit, my hair routine would be so much more simpler if i had 100% natural hair. I have yet to experience the simple pleasure that is the WASH N' GO. My chemically processed hair (if you can even CALL it hair) is started to break off. And i mean OFF. Never in my life have i experienced knotting and hair breakage like i am now. And it kinda sucks. Okay....it REALLY sucks. The thing is, there's no remedy for my situation. I seriously doubt i can salvage the ends of my hair....and why would i want to? Those ends are just begging to be chopped off. But i'll wait till the time is right. Which i announced to be JANUARY 1, 2010. ....yeah, about that. There may be a slight change of plans. Since i'm getting tired of taking care of this hair, especially in the fluctuating Texas weather (dry and cold one day, hot and humid the next, then cold and HUMID?!? ughhh), I decided to get Kinky Twists! My favorite transitional style to date. Here's a picture of me rockin' some twists: ![]() ![]() ![]() I need a protective style for these dry (sometimes wet, but whatever) winter months. I've been spritzing my hair with my concoction of Humectant conditioner, Tea Tree Oil, and water, and while my hair is getting softer, I don't want the ends of my NATURAL hair to suffer to the point of no return. I want maximum GROWTH, ya digggg! So like i said, I'm getting my very talented friend to braid my hair. I'm thinking shorter twists this time, and a lot bigger in size, for added volume. Kinda like this: ![]() (i snatched this from a fotki......just sayin') So i hafta keep these in for 8 weeks at LEAST, or else i won't feel like i got my money's worth. Can you say broke college kid? But anyway, that means when i take them out, it will be around JANUARY 14. It's still before i come back to Austin for the spring semester, but it's not exactly ringing in the new year with new hair. Hope y'all understand....lol. Yup, that's pretty much what's been going on with me! I'm getting the twists done this week, probably Thursday, so the video on the Miss Jessie's Grow Out Challenge home page will be the LAST VLOG with my natural hair out. But it's all good. New hair means new topics to discuss with all you lovelies! Happy growing, Evelyn |
So THIS is what soft hair feels like. THANKS MISS JESSIE'S!

For the first time in my natural (curly) born life, i think i've found the perfect combo for soft hair, even in this unpredictable Texas weather (it was definitely like 40 degrees over the weekend, and now it's 80, what gives?). MISS JESSIE'S CURLY MERINGUE AND ORGANIC UNREFINED SHEA BUTTER! This duo is ridiculous, y'all! Watch the video below for my go-to style: THE BANTU KNOT OUT! As many of you know, the second day of a style is often the best. But interestingly enough, when i first take down my bantu knots, the results are.....LUSCIOUS! You can, of course substitute Curly Meringue for any curl defining creme that you love. Be sure to apply the recommended amount - too much could end up flaking in your hair (that definitely happened to me the first time). LOVE IT! And i know it'll be even better when i finally do the big chop on January 1st! NEXT WEEK: my friend Benedicta's big chop from two weeks ago. She looks FIERCE. You won't wanna miss it! Happy growing, Evelyn. |

Watch my vlog for a quick UPDATE! And here are some pics i took JUST NOW in the NaturallyCurly.com office! ![]() ![]() ![]() Style: bantu knot out (3 days old) pulled back with with black headband. Please excuse the broke college kid attire.....i literally didn't have time to dress properly today. Y'all understand, right? Hahahaha. NEXT VIDEO: co-washing and/or redoing my bantu knots. And then taking them out the next day. Gonna get my hands on some Miss Jessie's products so i can start testing them out and reviewing them for you guys! happy growing, Evelyn |
