Trying so hard!
posted on Jan 21, 2010 by True2Self
I am a college student in my fourth year of schooling. Since the start of college, I set out to "find myself." Like most young black women that have endured the trials of college and social interaction, I was bamboozled by the concept that my hair was "nappy" and "unruly." I was told that the only way that I would have "good hair" was if I got a perm. So I did. Then I was told that my hair looked so good and that it would look even better if I dyed it! So I did. After finally refusing to be a mannequin for the hair evils around me, I decided it was time for a chop. Though I don't have a picture of my hair prior to my big haircut, my first image is of my hair about a month after. The stylist said that my ends were damaged and asked me to pick out a style that I would like for my hair. I chose an A-Line. . .she made me look like Spanky from the Little Rascals (not to mention, she PERMED MY HAIR despite my subtle hints that I did NOT want a perm, such as, "yea, I'm done with perms. Nope. No perms for me" She didn't quite catch on.) Thus one side of my head had hair that was drastically shorter than the other, and the style did not fit my face. Another stylist had to fix the hair (and cut MORE) about two weeks later. He mentioned that the first stylist would not admit the fact that she was unable to complete the style I had chosen but instead just wanted her money. She stole my money. . .and my HAIR!![]() I was devastated. So I did everything I could from that moment to get my hair back to its length. I did weaves (as you can see) ![]() ![]() and braids (as you can also see) and finally, almost two years later, My hair can be put into a poof! (YAY!) ![]() Fortunately, despite the hair travesties my hair has had to endure, I have made a vow, in my senior year of school, to do myself and my hair better. I haven't even let the idea of getting a perm cross my mind! However, when it comes to this natural hair journey, I feel like I'm all alone at school. There are little to no hair companies for Black women in my area. I was able to find SOME of the products mentioned on this wonderful site (as well as curlynikki.com), but otherwise, I find myself struggling to get adjusted in my pursuit of natural hair products. Not to mention, on a college budget, some of these products get pretty expensive. All in all, I hope that as my knowledge of my hair grows, to find a hair guru or mentor that will carry me to folicular success. Women my age seem to be so fascinated with the make-believe life of "straight hair" or "good hair" that we forget how marvelous our own hair can be. I know I was brainwashed into believing that my hair wasn't beautiful, which gave me the inspiration for my username: True2Self. I can only be true to the reflection I see in the mirror. |

- Being a senior comes the ultimate amounts of collegiate stress. . .and hair breakage. College included hair experiments (hair dye *yikes!* and perms *ugh!*). But as I journey to graduation, I made a vow to treat myself, and my HAIR better.
