I Did It!

Today I decided to color my hair! I picked a red color. If I can find a picture of the box I'll post it. It didn't turn out this red or very red at all. It's looks more like a rinse so my hair glistens red in the sunlight. :o)

I colored... then washed with a Suave shampoo with sulfate because I started the Curly Girl Method today like I wanted to! Super excited about that! It was kinda tough finding CG approved products at CVS though... I think next time I'll hit up Target or Walmart.

I did a hot oil treatment and added some honey and baggied that for 20 mins. Then I co-washed with V05 Tea Therapy in Vanilla Mint (smells soooo good!) and lastly rinsed with Burts Bees Grapefruit and Beets Conditioner. Then Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Milk in Pomegranate Guava as my leave in! I sealed with shea butter... my hair is super soft and feels like a cotton ball now so I'm glad that the color hasn't caused too much damage yet!

Hopefully this will not deter my hair growth. I don't plan on letting it. I'm planing on attempting to use more protective styles for the winter. I just feel like it's so difficult because my hair is so short! I don't know how to cornrow soo.. Maybe I'll try flat twists. We'll see. Check out my fotki for more pictures of my hair and the October folder for more pics of the coloring process!

Going Curly Girl!

So I've been doing a lot of research the past few weeks about the Curly Girl method. It's something I discovered here on naturallycurly.com and it's basically not using any sulfates or silicones in your hair. For more about the method check out this thread.

My hair has been growing pretty well but I definitely think using less harsh chemicals can only be better for my growth and progress! I've been taking advantage of natural hair forums, blogs and YouTube and I think that I'm well prepared to start this new chapter of my natural hair journey.

I found this amazing list of Curly Girl approved products at Girl With Curl's blog so I'm gonna go shopping tomorrow. I tend to go overboard with products so it's going to take a lot of will power to not be fooled by fancy bottles promising silky, amazing curls lololol! Here are some recent pictures from the past couple of weeks so you can see my length and how I've been doing since my big chop.

Wish me luck with Curly Girl! I'm uber excited!!

July 17, 2009

On July 17, 2009 I did something I never thought I would do in a million years!!!! I chopped off all my chemically treated hair and decided to go natural! It was friggin awesome! I have never been so happy with a hair decision ever. No more relaxers! It's great to not have to worry about getting my hair wet or having to get a touch up every month! Take a look at what my hair's been up to over the past few months!

This was my hair a few years ago relaxed. It was shoulder length and pretty healthy. I dyed it often though and in this picture it was dyed jet black.

This picture was taken at a concert in May 2009. I had cut my hair short and was rocking a pixie-ish cut. I liked this because it was very simple to maintain but I wanted change so I started researching curly hair.

This is the day of my big chop! I was so excited! I took my mom and roommate to dinner that night and wore my TWA with confidence!

Check back for updates on my growth! I'll post some more recent pictures that show my length now. I am excited to see how much my hair can grow in the next few months!

  • My name is Nadia and I'm a 25 year old college student living in Massachusetts. I'm studying communication and will make my career in sports media. I recently decided to go natural after doing research and realizing that I don't need a relaxer to be beautiful. I'm learning to love myself and take better care of myself overall. I've even recently started working out and eating better and have lost 10 lbs! My blogs will be about my natural journey and the ups and downs that come with it. I'm learning about my texture, what products work for me and how to make help my hair be its healthiest!
