Big Chop #2

Well, I've done it again.  Just cut it off to start my natural journey anew.  I did the first BC early 2009.  I remained chemical-free but continued using the flat iron so frequently on high temps that my natural curl was dry and damaged.  So here I go again.  My second attempt to style my natural 3c/4a-ish hair sans the flat iron.

I've learned my lesson.  I'll just be stronger and take care better care of my curls.  My 2inch curls will be creatively styled and maintained.  Can't wait until it's much longer and back to good health.

sticking to my guns...

It's a challenge being a Puerto Rican woman with 3c type hair in a family with so many different hair types...mostly 'good'. So naturally the definitions of beauty vary greatly but always end up with the same notion that longer and straighter is better.  Now you can imagine how it went when I chopped it off and let my hair 'be'.

The reactions varied. The first were waves of concerned inquiries as they pointedly looked at my hair and asked 'Scilla' is everything OK...?'.  They actually treated me like I was depressed and borderline suicidal.  Then came the well-meant salon referrals.  Oh! of course, the callous remarks only annoying brothers can get away with, the 'You're really going out like that?, or 'Can't you do a doobie or something?'

Yeah it was and still is very interesting to see different reactions and that's just from family. I'll get into the reactions of friends, coworkers and even my man in another post.

In the midst of all this is the peace within that I've made the right choice for me.  I see my hair healthier and stronger and know that smelly and harmful chemicals are not the only avenues to being beautiful. I can enjoy a perfectly productive Saturday without wasting long hours in the beauty salon. Oh I can go on and on listing the personal benefits of my grow out but I'll leave it for another blog. :)

So there...I'm sticking to my guns and moving forward with my naturally curly self.  I'm learning to ignore the negative comments and enjoy the beautiful hair God has given me.

Thanks to all my fellow bloggers for sharing your experiences and support in this journey. It's encouraging to have an entire network of ladies making this brave and bold decision with me.

Still hanging in there...

Well, I chopped it off last year and did it again early February.  Still loving my curls.

The weather's warming up and I'm working out more so I'll soon be leaving my hair in it's curly state. Any suggestions to help keep the curl without build up would be great.  Later!

The Waiting Game...

  • Last year, I made the refreshing decision to chop off all my relaxed hair & start from scratch with chemical-free, naturally curly hair. My goal is to let it grow past my shoulders. Just trying to enjoy the short length for now. Must be patient.
