Keep your hair very moisturized and make sure to cut off damaged ends, such as split ends and single strand knots. Those both exacerbate any tangles and can even form matted hair when not removed properly. Also make sure to thoroughly detangle the hair when wet and full of conditioner in order to remove shed hair that gets caught. If you aren't wearing a wash and go, you might want to braid your hair or something in order to protect it from bouncing around and hitting against things, especially at night while sleeping.

Have you tried using a leave-in conditioner? That works for a lot of people. Also, sleep on a satin pillowcase... this can reduce night-time tangles.
