Please help! Before my hair swallows me whole

Hello, I'm a fourteen year old mixed girl. My mother is white and has large curls and my dad is black and native american and has thick, densely packed hair. That left me with a mess. I'm not sure what type I am, but I'm pretty sure it's a mix of two or three. It's tightly curled and springy in most spots, but in others it's curls more like my moms; loose and large. Then, in other spots it's just a tangle of frizz. But it all starts the same way, on the top of my head it's these tiny waves. When it's not wet, it shrinks up to about 1inch above my shoulders. When it is wet, it's resting right on my shoulders. But when I pull out a curl all the way, it goes about 2 inches below my shoulder blades. When I was a young my mom treated my hair as if it was her own, brushing it alot and using barely any product. But, when I would go to my dads house, he would comb it and put a butt load of grease in it. ( I hated both ) eventually, my mom realized my hair wasn't that easily managed and started to do research, but I'll admit; she's still just as clueless as I am. I can't get it cut at a hair dresser because alot of them locally think they're only taking off a half an inch, But in reality the took off 2. After that, I've just had my mom trim it. I'd like to continue growing out my hair because that helps weigh it down an i like the longer look, but it's more to manage. I don't know what to do with it, what to use and what not to use. I wanna maintain my curls without damaging my hair in the long term. Please help!

Hi, I´m 14 too and I used to have your problems (some I still do!). First of all, just want to say I totally get the whole-wavy and super curly and loose curls in one- my hairs like that too! It´s mostly 3c but I have some random wavy/straight pieces that bug me.

Anyways, Here are some tips:

-Don't wash your hair every day! It´s good to let the natural oils from your scalp release and keep your hair soft and healthy. I was my hair once a week, people with thinner and less curly hair may do it every other day. Just see how long your hair goes without getting greasy or itchy.

-Stop shampooing! Most shampoos have sulfates and bad stuff that dry ur hair out (im sure ur hair is plenty dry lol) so you should use a sulfate free shampoo, some conditioner, a cleanser,etc. Here´s a link for all u need to know about stop shampooing: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/no-poo-cleansing/all-about-the-no-poo-routine-2#nc-gallery-header

-Condition! Use lots of conditioner in the shower too condition and don't wash all of it out! I use Suave Coconut Conditioner cause its super cheap (2.50) and really good!

-Deep condition! Once a week I deep condition with olive oil (or coconut oil, jojoba oil, coconut milk, etc..) Look up DIY deep conditioners or buy some, this will make your hair softer and healthier.

-Dry your hair with a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel (it creates frizz).

-Use some creamy, natural hair product! The ones that CrlyKT mentioned are good. I like anything from the Shea Natural line or the Cantu Shea Butter leave in conditioning repair cream.(u can get it at any drugstore) its only 5 buck for 16 oz. which is really good!

-Seal with a little bit of styling oil for shine. Focus it on the ends. I use this Suave Moroccan argan oil.

-Let air dry or diffuse. I always let it air dry but its up to you.

-No heat! No straightening! You have to make a commitment to your hair and wear it curly and keep it healthy.

Hope this helps, sorry if its too much to read! I hope you fall in love with ur hair like I did! (:

I use a small amount of these two mixed together.  I bought it from Sally’s but I’ve seen it at Walmart, too!  It might be trial and error to see how much you need for your hair.  My hair gets pretty dry!  When my hair is wet, first I put a  small amount of leave-in conditioner (or I spray it with water if it is a day I don’t wash my hair), then some argan oil hair treatment, and then the combination of the two things I sent you the link to.  I read an article about the “LOC” method for curly hair, “L”eave-in conditioner, “O”il, and “C”ream, I’ve been doing this and it helps a lot with the frizz!

There are also a lot of gorgeous girls on YouTube who are mixed and ROCK their curls.  Here are a few of their channels;

You could also search "Mixed Girl Tag" on YouTube and find girls with hair that is most like yours, and see what they do!   Sorry it's so much info (hopefully not too much), good luck!!
