I am newly transitioning to my naturally curly hair and have some permanent straightness from years of fried, dyed and laid to the side styling. So I'm still getting use to my new tresses. But a couple months ago I went to Leo after deciding to stop straightening my hair. I'm not sure what I wanted because I was just beginning, but I did know that I really needed the cut she gave me and there was no pressure from her for me to cut my hair at all. I had to just remind myself that my hair wasn't going to look like everyone else's because I was transitioning. I also appreciated that Leo listened to my questions and gave me some good advice about my hair. Since then my hair has grown out evenly as she said it would and she was able to cut off the straight ends on the back of my head. I'm still battling the front half, but it will take a while to grow that out. I liked the products Leo used for washing. She used Wen products and I loved the smell and how my hair felt after as I was curious about the product. After the cut my friends and family complimented even to date and now they want to visit Leo. I believe her price for the cut ($80) to be fair and I loved her technique. I am still transitioning and I will continue to make appointments with her in the future. Thanks, Leo.
I have been to Leo twice now. I was waiting to write a review based on more than one visit. My first visit was for a hair cut. I went with the intention of "embracing my curls" and to get a cut that complemented my curly hair. I had been wearing it straight mostly for the previous 2 years. I had a short cut about 1 & 1/2 year prior to and I was growing it back out. I was clear about wanting to continue to grow my hair length but also having a cut that worked for the definition of my curls. She dry cuts to the contour of your curls, then washes and styles. I was a little disappointed when I left the salon. I felt like my hair was shorter than I wanted. However, my curls were looking very happy and more defined that they had look in a long time. She also suggested a sulfate free shampoo, which I decided to purchase. My second visit was for a color. My previous stylist had really messed up a color and I was going to Leo to try and get what I actually wanted. I had her darken my base to a chocolate brown and highlight the front to a bronze/honey blonde. I left very satisfied this time. My color looked great with my curls and was also complementary to my skin tone. Yesterday was the first time I have straightened my hair since this spring when I first went to Leo. Let me say that: 1. My color is AWESOME and 2. My cut works even with my hair straight and has grown beautifully since the initial cut this spring. I will be going to Leo again however, I will try and be more obvious about what I want in terms of length when I am getting any cut done.
I personally don't have curly hair, but my mom does, and unfortunately she's never really had a great hairstyle from anyone who knows how to work specifically with curly hair. Based on reviews from this site, I decided to treat my mom to a haircut from Leo Freeman in hopes that it would be a great experience for her and leave her with a better style than she's ever had. The salon itself is very zen and fun, everyone was pleasant, lots of comfy places to sit while waiting, offers of drinks, magazines to read, fun decor (loved the guitars on the walls!) and music playing that just left you with a relaxed and happy vibe. Definitely gets an A+ from me. Leo did a great job finding what worked for my mom personally, since she doesn't have a lot of time to spend doing her hair, but definitely wanted a change from the same old hairstyle she's had for almost 30 years. My mom left feeling like she'd gotten what she wanted (even if she didn't know what it was when we went in!) and was very happy with the amount of change made to her curls. It made me a little jealous! I would definitely recommend The Loft Hair Studio, and Leo Freeman in particular, to anyone.
I'm pretty disappointed with the stylist and with the reviews in this site glorifying her. I went to her expecting to get a great cut not only because of how highly regarded she is on this website, but also because she charges $80 for a hair cut, which to me is higher than I would like to pay for a hair cut, but I'm happy to spend it if the outcome is truly great. I feel like I left there with my hair looking just like it was when I came in, just a little shorter. She didn't do much to change the shape of it. I told her I wanted more volume on the top, and my hair is still flat on the top. I told her I LOVE to wear my hair big and really teased up, and I left with semi-wet defined curls. I don't feel like she listened. Plus I didn't find her as nice as other people did. I've had way nicer stylists before and I'll be more likely to return to them next time. If you're going to charge $80 just to give a couple snips to a client's hair then at least earn your money in personality. Ugh. I'm definitely not returning to this salon. The only positive thing I have to say is that the wait time wasn't long and they had this awesome massage chair where I sat while I waited (great idea) other than that, I wouldn't recommend it.
I went and got my hair cut a couple of weeks ago and I'm extremly happy with my cut! Leo was so gentle with my hair and really took her time to get to know me and my hair! My appointment was at 11:00am and I went to sit in har chair at 11:04am...that was the first thing I was impressed about, I remember when I use to get my hair pressed years ago waiting so long to get my hair done because the stylist booked clients back to back every 30 minutes when they knew they would not be done before the next appointment time! Well not Leo she was very professional and spent a whole hour on my hair and I was just getting it cut not styled and her assistant was great as well! I'm glad I found my new hair stylist for my curly hair cuts! I was debating over Leo at The Loft or Shai at Chapella Salon, I just picked one and I'm so glad I picked Leo, by the end of my visit I felt like I had known her for years! She is a very down to earth type of person and I would reccommend any naturally curly woman like myself to see Leo.....She is Awesome!!!!! : ) Thanks Leo you did a great job! Warmly, Crystal
I got my hair cut by Leo this week...been meaning to go since forever...and WOW was it worth it! The woman is amazing. I went with my insanely long, drabby looking curly hair with no shape whatsoever and she turned me into a curl vixen. My curls now go up to the roots of my hair...no more flat crown. She first sat me down and talked to me about what I normally do with my hair and how I wear it and what I'd like to achieve with the cut.I explained I wanted volume but to not look like a lion and to still maintain some length. She achieved that and I'm super happy! It's incredible how she cuts hair while it's still dry. After the cut my hair was washed, then product was put on it while wet, then I was pinned up and put under a dryer for a little bit, then the hair was misted and diffused and finally hand styled. All that cost $80 (for anyone interested in knowing). She mainly uses DevaCare and WEN products... since I usually use DevaCare that's mainly what was put on my hair. It's been several days and the curls are excellent and it's easy to maintain. It looks fantastic! A haircut by someone who knows how to cut curly hair is key, and Leo did a fantastic job.
I had such a a great experience with Leo. I went to her for the first time this past Saturday for a cut, color and highlights. I was very nervous since I had never cut my curly hair but Leo definitely knew what she was doing. She cut my hair when it was dry to give me great bangs and layers. Finally my hair has shape! I am also very happy with the color and highlights. Leo is very knowledgeable about curly hair and told me about products I should use or stop using in order for my hair to be healthy. The shampoo and condition with Wen products left my hair very soft and shiny. I will definitely be returning and have already recommended her to my other curly friends.
I made an appointment with Leo after reading the amazing reviews on Naturallycurly.com. I will start by saying that I recognize that Leo is a talented hairdresser and she gave me a good haircut with a nice shape. However, that being said, she completely disregarded what I asked for. She took the time at the beginning to ask what I wanted and I very clearly stated that I wanted to keep the length. She said that she understood and she started cutting. She moved me away from the mirror so I didn't have the ability to see what (or how much) she was cutting. She must have cut off at least 3 inches of hair and made no reference to the fact that it wasn't what I wanted. When I pointed out that it is much shorter than we discussed, she said "I had to do that to even it out and it will grow back in no time." I understand that sometimes a certain desired hair length might not be the one that flatters the client best, but it is not the hairdressers decision to make, it is the clients! If Leo had suggested that I should go shorter, I might have agreed, but it was inappropriate of her to decide for me. The other piece that disappointed me was that I did not find her to be friendly at all. She would smile occasionally, but it never felt genuine. Although my haircut looks good, I will not be going back because I need to know that the person I'm paying to cut my hair is going to listen to me, even if she disagrees with what I want.
Leo Freeman is an angel sent from God :) She is an amazing person in and out and a true beautician. I drove to her hair studio located in Sherman Oaks from Orange County and plan on doing it frequently. Okay, let's get directly to my review. Call ahead for directions because it may be a bit tricky to find this hidden gem! Luckily I found a place right on the street where there are meters (which accept MasterCard, Visa and American Express as well as quarters! They also have a parking lot in the back.) As I walked upstairs and opened the door I felt at ease immediately. It is very zen inspired and earthly with brown, tope and green tones. I know most people would want to know my hair "type". I am multi cultured (mixed with black and European). My hair is mixed between a 3a-3c and it is down to the middle of my back. First things first - the famous Deva hair cut (I was charged $80). It took her about an hour in a half to cut my hair. Patience is virtue! I showed her a few pictures to let her know what I was going for and she nailed it! She did such a stunning job on my thick curls. I have never had such an amazing hair cut in ALL my years. She then washed my hair using Wen's Fig shampoo/conditioner (which I later purchased as well. She is NOT pushy about selling her products.) She has the DevaCurl Products as well and the Wen Products. She then styled and defused my hair leaving me in tears! (Good ones of course!) I just HAD to give her a hug. I am without a doubt a new loyal customer. If you are debating the drive, believe me when I say it is BEYOND worth it especially if you have curls that need to be healthy and tended to. Leo is so knowledgable with curly hair and just hair in general as far as healthiness, etc. She is also quite affordable for someone who was personally trained from the owner of DevaChon Salon in NY. Leo is inspirational about hair and is a true artist as far as I am concerned. Thank you Leo.
THE BIG CHOP! I was scared of what might happen, what it will look like, will I like it! Because of Leo's confidence my nerves were calming down. I am so happy that I found her because she REALLY knows what she is doing. I have Biracial ethnic hair and usually when I go to a salon who doesn't have much experience with my hair type the comments are usually "I don't get to work with this hair often" "So are we going straight?" "This will be fun". With Leo, "You have great texture, you should wear it natural, I know what I'm going to do and it's going to look cute." Boy did she deliver. When I first saw the finish product it was a bit of a shock because she had to cut a bit of hair and I wasn't used to myself with the hair style. But it started to grow on me FAST. And everyone loved it. So that was reassuring. She is very helpful in helping you understand your hair and what is best for you. SHe has her own room which was nice. And the salon itself is very nice and calm feeling and the staff are welcoming. GO TO LEO!!
I recently scheduled an appointment with Leo Freeman of the Loft Hair Studio for a haircut. I had received positive feedback from a naturallycurly.com friend who commented on her hair cutting and coloring skills. I also researched comments and feedback on this site as well as the salon's website. Everything I read indicated that she was an experienced and talented stylist. My entire experience was wonderful. When I got to the salon, I introduced myself to Leo and her assistant. I found her to be pleasant and professional. She questioned me on what I wanted to do with my hair in terms of a cut. I explained to her that I was looking to cut off dead ends, have face framing layers and to reduce the bulk in the bank of my hair. I also explained to her my hair history of transitioning from relaxer to natural, my discovery that I had curly hair, my current product use and frustration with not being able to find a stylist that could cut curly hair. I found Leo very meticiulous at cutting and styling hair. She patiently snipped away from almost an hour. She gives a dry cut. She gave me face framing layers in the front and layers in the back while decreased the bulk, so, I would no longer have helmet hair. I believe that she cut or trimmed every curl. Some curls, she split in half and trimmed half. The cut really flatters my face. Then, her assistant cleansed, conditioned and applied hair gel to my hair. I then sat under a dryer for about 20 minutes and Leo came from time to time to check my hair. I, then, sat back in her chair, and she snipped away again for about 15 minutes. She did cut quite a bit of length, but, I told her that she could get rid of the dead ends. I feel confident about being able to style my hair where I can wear it down and free. She really did a beautiful job and I have beautiful curls. And, my color (henna) is more evident now. I made an appointment in 2 months for a trim as I intend to keep going to her. The cost, I feel, is reasonable for the level of service that you receive. All in all, it was a positive experience and I am very pleased with the results.
I first met Leo because of the ad that popped up on this site. I'm so glad I clicked on it and made an appointment. At the time, I was transitioning from absolutely hating my hair and using a relaxer once or twice a year to becoming a Deva devotee. I had already stopped relaxing and was using Deva products, but my hair was still a mess! Leo was the first stylist I can remember who actually took the time to examine my hair rather thoroughly and talk to me about what I loved or hated about it. She was really interested in discovering what "look" would work best for me. She was trained by Lorraine Massey herself, back when she still ran the workshops herself. She does a dry cut and takes her time, granted this can be VERY time consuming, but ultimately it's so very worth it. Also, she uses Deva products almost exclusively and has trained her assistants (fab girls too!) how to do the Deva style wash and condition AND even more importantly, they use super absorbant towels and do the hand scrunch dry. No rubbing or turbans from these girls! It marked the first time in my entire life I ever felt truly happy with a cut that left my hair curly - usually I'd only be satisfied if they cut and then blow dried - Leo and I let it air dry to get a good look at how it was going to take shape. From the first visit to the last (Sadly, I can't afford her right now because of my budget constraints, but I'd go back in a heartbeat if I had more $) I can honestly say that I was supremely happy with the service she provided. As the quality of my hair continues to improve, I know that it all got started with Leo's magic!
Leo is phenomenal! She has curly hair, and certainly knows how to cut and care for curls. Today was my second visit, my last visit resulted in a great dry cut, (my haircut still rocks) and a color that matched my previous color.........today the gurl out did herself! I did want a little darker brown and color is so rich looking, I can't stop looking in the mirror, plus my cut is still really cute, my hair is about shoulder length, (between a 3b &3c hair type, I'm African American) and she cut it in long layers about two months ago.........I know I'm pushing it, but it still looks so good, I just didn't want to get it cut today........ok, back to Leo.... She is lovely, not too talkative, (that's cool with me, cause I'd rather have her concentrate on my hair :). I guess I would describe her as "Easy as Sunday Morning" no drama, dedicated to her trade. Her hair coloring, and cutting are both fantastic. She listens and recommends ways for you to take care of your hair. She is certified in the Deva cutting technique and she also worked with Chaz Dean, the creator of the Wen products. She uses both Deva and Wen products....... she does not force feed you with either product. All in all it's been a great experience each time I've gone to Leo, she is professional, doesn't keep you waiting, takes her time listening and gives you.... a better looking you............glorious curls o btw her hair is fabulous!
Leo is WONDERFUL! Not only is she kind and easy to talk to, but very, very knowledgeable in all things "curly." :) I love the fact that she is not concerned with hair classifications, but the importance of learning how to care for your own unique curls. I am a huge fan of Team Leo.
Appt: Wednesday August 26,2009 I first found Leo on this site. She had amazing reviews and I was in desperate need of someone who actually knew what they were doing with curly hair. She is in fact a godsend. She does dry cutting, which actually makes total sense when you realize you don't really know how it's going to look until it's dry. She was friendly and patient with me and listened to my ideas on what I wanted and gave me an amazing cut. Also her assistant Marjorie was the most awesome assistant ever! She gave me the best shampoo, and conditioning treatment. Very, very relaxing. I didn't leave with a curly style, because to me I'm at a salon and I don't blow my hair that often because it's usually so much work that I just wanted someone to do it for me. Marjorie was the best. She gave me a great style and when I decided to finally wash my hair out and style it curly, both my boyfriend and I were impressed. It looked great both ways! I received a deep conditioning treatment which was 35.00 and totally worth it as well as the actual cut from Leo which was 80.00 and I also bought some Deva Curl Products which I absolutely love. All in all the experience was great, the service was AWESOME, and the price wasn't that bad. I've been to stylist where I've paid much more and was not near as happy. My total review is that if you're looking for someone who knows what they're doing with curly hair Leo is the person to go to. She is awesome and very professional and I really hope to see Marjorie follow in her footsteps too, because she was pretty great herself! Anyway I hope this helps!
Wow! I've been seeing a woman familiar with curly/ethnic hair for about 10 years prior to meeting Leo, but it was nothing to compared to what I experienced with her! Everything people have written about her here is TRUE! First of all, she's adorable. Secondly, she is willing to do a consult free of charge. Third, she listens and gently examines your hair. She is Deva trained (by Lorraine Massey herself) and it shows. The cutting process may take a while since she does go thru piece by piece, but its definitely worth it! I'm usually there about an hour and that includes 10-15 minutes under the dryer. I've seen Leo now twice and after my second visit - well, now I've gone curly girl for about 2 years now, and I've never been happy with my hair curly ever - but after my most recent cut, I was actually happy and smiling. Something I'd never do unless my hair had been blown out. Even Leo, said Wow! You will too. Leo is not just a technician, but an artist as well. She's worth it and from now on, I'm a loyal disciple.
I absolutely love Leo's method of cutting curly, kinky hair. She cuts it dry without a comb/brush; she uses her fingers to feel through your hair. She's reasonably priced, $80 for a cut. She gives great advice on how to take care of your hair and what products to use. I've recommended her to friends and they love her too!
Two big thumbs up. After experimenting on my 2b hair with CO technique, went to Leo for cut, color and highlights. All great. The consistent comment I get is I look younger! It doesn't get better than that. It is a very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere and Leo really listens to your desires. I finally have a hair style I can recreate myself.
After reading all the great reviews here, I decided to go find Leo, and have her do her thing. Basically my sister in law has been in charge of my hair for the past 20 years. I'm all grown up now, so it was time to individuate and find a stylist who REALLY new curly hair. Yes, Leo is the one, she was a great listener. Very gentle, precise, and respectful. I walked away feeling very proud of my tresses..and happy with my cut. My hair is long, and she did a great job of keeping it that way..but giving it some dimension. I look forward to seeing her again!
I have tried over 10 hairstylists in the past 10-15 years to find the One who would understand my babyfine curly hair. Many were good the 1st time, but then the second visit would not listen, or would cut it weird or something...But now: I found Leo from this website and debated between trying her or Shai at Cappella who also got rave reviews here( and where Leo used to work)...I randomly decided on Leo and am so happy I did. (Altho I met Shai when I went to buy Devacurl products that Trilogy had run out of, and he was delightful and kind and only had wonderful things to say about Leo! I suspect he is probably equally as wonderful) SO anyway: Leo is patient, mellow, listens, takes time, has great ideas... and did I mention she is drop dead gorgeous, unpretentious, and very sweet. I have gone to her 3 times now and my hair has never looked better! Tho baby fine, it now looks full and thick! So many comments on how cute my hair is. I used to think...oh it has to be long at all costs... but long isnt always flattering. I am starting to find my own "look" and my own style with Leo's help, and I really feel prettier by enhancing who I am, do you know what I mean? I wake up, use my fingers and a pick, and my hair falls into place. Also, the Devacurl products are miraculous lifesavers! I just saw Leo today and went SHORT! Gasp! but I trusted Leo's eye and skills and the style is pretty sharp, and still with tously curls. Amazing. The salon Trilogy is cozy, down to earth funky with great music, coffee, tea, great products for sale including Aveda... Good luck!
Eureka... I've FINALLY struck gold! After reading several favorable reviews on her I decided to bite the bullet and try my luck with Devachan certified stylist, Leo Freeman. Upon arrival Leo listened carefully to my list of hair issues before providing her own suggestions and agreeing on a plan of action. She cut me dry, lock by lock, and then applied 3 separate shades of color, giving me an excellently well defined head of gorgeous high/low-lights. Next, a customized steam conditioning treatment quenched my thirsty frizz. Now was the time for the usually dreaded styling of my wet mop before sending me out the door. I thought, “Here we go"" ...no one has EVER gotten THIS right. But guess what? Leo DID! Before the appointment was over, I had learned a few new styling tricks and found two new favorite products. Bottom line - Leo's vast first-hand curl experience and UN-one-size-fits-all approach is as refreshing as it is effective. LEO KNOWS CURLS. Do yourself a favor... go see her!
Leo Freeman is a gifted hair professional. I love the way she does my hair and I would recommend her to every curly haired person I know. She cuts and maintains my hair so beautifully and has made it easy for me to care for my curls. I've been wearing my hair naturally curly for years but only since she's been cutting it have people starting commenting on it and I hear it all the time, people are always saying "I love your hair" and I believe them, because I love it too! She's beautiful and smart and I never want anybody else to ever cut my hair again.
I am a black woman who transitioned out of a relaxer for over a year. I wore braids and twists off and on during this time and after this last set of braids knew it was time for the BC. After reading all the great reviews on her and reaching out to several stylists by phone and email, Leo called me back on her day off and answered my questions. I went to see her today and she was fabulous. She was very patient, kind, knowledgeable (she's a Devachan certified stylist too), and has these big juicy curls that cascade down the side of her face. She answered my many questions and explained what she was doing every step of the way. After cutting and no-poo cleansing she gave me a deep condition treatment under a steamer. She then coiled my hair with Mixed Chicks leave-in and put me under the dryer. Some of the curls were frizzy at the ends so she didn't separate them to avoid more frizz. I don't love or hate the look, I just envisoned something different. I have a lot to learn about caring for and styling my hair in its natural state as I wore a relaxer for well over 20 years. Overall I'm pleased. If you've been thinking of seeing Leo - go for it. If you are a black woman in the Southern Cal/Los Angeles area ready for your BC and looking for someone who knows what they're doing and will take good care of your hair - see Leo. I traveled 90 minutes to see her and will go back when I'm ready for color. Email me if you have questions. Good luck!
I went to see Leo after the good reviews on this site. The salon was nice and everyone was friendly. Leo did a good job with my hair. She uses the Devacurl process and cut it dry. She spent a lot of time explaining things to me and gave me a hair mask as well. I would highly recommend her to others.
Leo is one of a kind! I've been trusting her with my curls for 3 years now and each visit is a joy. She also does incredible color. I'm an actress and had to dye my hair from my natural blonde to red for a film recently. Leo took such good care of my curls throughout the whole red-hair phase, slowly removing the red and highlighting me back to blonde when the film finished. And my hair is still super soft and shiny! Her vast knowledge on products and ingredients is a great help. It feels wonderful to be able to trust someone so completely with my haircuts and color. In addition to being a total hair pro and curl-expert, Leo is kind, warm and funny; in short, a lovely stylist who has become my friend. I'm with her for good!
I totally dig Leo! She always does such a stellar job on my cuts, and when I told her I wanted to let the gray come in, she was extremely supportive. She always spends a lot of time on my hair and gives me a great cut. Leo's hair is absolutely gorgeous as well. I highly recommend her!
Leo is the best! She uses Deva Curl products, and will do a half hour consultation with no obligation to go thru with an appointment. After talking to her on the phone, though, I already had enough confidence in her to just make the appointment for a cut. The day of my visit, she spent an hour and a half with me and did a fantastic job! Both she and the salon receptionist, Amber, were very patient and helpful on the phone and in person. Leo was a good listener, taking in my photos, and what I wanted and just running with it. She first cut my hair dry, then 'washed' it with a Deva Curl conditioning cleanser, then cut it more while wet. It was such a relief to have a stylist that knows already knows how to cut curly hair without me having to explain!! She is a curly girl herself and really has a great head of hair! She shaped my hair really well and gave me such a stylish do that I never thought I could have with curly hair. (I have a ton of 3a type curls). Since seeing her, I've gotten so many compliments! I will definately been seeing her again soon!

I visited Leo on 8-10-06 and i had the most wonderful experience. She truly understands curly hair and knows exactly what do with it. I absolutely love her work. My hair looked amazing after I left the salon. Thank you Leo
I had a great experience with Leo. She is very thorough and precise and spent a good deal of time discussing with me what I wanted - cut and color. My hair looks great and I highly recommend her!
Leo Freeman has moved to a new salon! Her cuts are as amazing as ever, my color is always perfect and I'm never disappointed. She's got the most gorgeous curly hair - and totally understands the proper care (and frustration!) with our crazy hair. You will enjoy every minute spent with her - and you can trust that she'll always take good care of you. If you have any questions...please contact me!
