After a ridiculously through internet search I have finally found Malaika. I figured I would help make that process easier for anyone else by writing this review. I saw all these great reviews for her on this website but when I called Helmet Salon they said she has not worked there for years. Hello! Update these reviews so people aren't misdirected. Anyway, Malaika works at Adore Hair Studio in Inman Park. She told me has been there for the past 3 years. The salon is bright and airy and in the cutest neighborhood. All the reviews were spot on. I got the best haircut if my life. It's been a week and my hair still has lots of volume and a great shape. I am impressed. I will be going back very soon. She is officially my new hairstylist!
I have been seeing Erika for just over 5 years. I originally found her by reading all the reviews on this site and would follow her anywhere. I was sad but not deterred when Helmet called me this week to confirm my appt but also tell me that Erika was no longer there. I sought her out and found her!! She is renting space until she can get her own salon up and running. Schedule online: http://www.schedulicity.com/Scheduling/BusinessInfo.aspx?business=HC284Q
The other day I got a horrifying email. My girl Erika is no longer with Helmet! As all of us curly girls know, it isn't about the salon, it's about the stylist, and when we find "the one" it is the most important relationship in the world! Luckily I tracked her down online, and she is still doing hair, in fact she is opening her own place! Curly girls rejoice! Her email is ERIKA@HAWKINSANDCLOVER.COM. No need to panic!
Let me first start out by saying I love Malaika and I would never let anyone else touch my hair. I trust her whole heartedly! That being said, I called Helmet to make an appointment with Malaika last week and they told me she was no longer there. I almost passed out, I have been seeing her for three years! Of course I went into panic mode and asked where she was and they were kind enough to give me her phone number. I called and just like that had an appointment with her that week at her new, super cute, location in Virginia Highlands (at Shear Love). I wanted to let all you other devotees and prospective curly girls know how to find her. We all know once you find a good hairstylist you will follow them to the ends of the earth. If you have not seen Malaika and are looking for a knowledgeable, patient, understanding hairstylist, who is super nice and cute to boot, you MUST give Malaika a try. Tell her Jen sent you!
Not a bad haircut. Would I go back...probably. Background: I've been wearing my hair unstraightened for the past 3 years. This was my first curly cut. Pros: Nice salon. Convenient location. Somewhat trendy. Malaika is very sweet. She started the appointment by asking about my hair care regimen. We also discussed how my hair grows and I showed her a pic of a cut that I liked, but asked her suggestions on altering it for my hairtype. Cons: We stated that she would only be cutting approx 1" from my length after I told her that I wanted to retain length and shape it for long layers. Overall a decent experience, but some areas for improvement. As I mentioned before Malaika is very sweet and patient with new clients. If you have a looser wave pattern that doesn't require products that provide more moisture/definition/hold then this may be a great place for you.
There are a few very important people in a woman's life. An expert stylist in your corner- A VIP. As the other reviews state- Erika listens to your hair concerns, asks questions about your time/maintence committment and has only one goal in mind- to make you look your absolute best. Erika's pursuit of education is remarkable. She trains, studies and researches her craft. I tried lots of snazzy Bhead salons and did not find ounce of craft or personality in any of my $200+ cut/color. I found Erika on Yelp and she's my VIP. For the last two years, I have been amazed with her work. Some visits I'm looking for a great blowout- which she rocks. Recently I have been requesting she style my thin curly hair with bouncy, fun curls- complements galore! She has tweaked the color to adjust seasonally, carefully advised when it was time to make the "big" cut and consulted on my makeup. When I needed a Stylist for a photoshoot, she consulted, styled and perfected my look! I have crazy, mad respect for Erika as a stylist. Call Helmet, book with Erika; it's exactly what you and your curls need!
Malaika is awesome! She turned my coarse curly hair into beautiful classic Hollywood waves. She knows how to cut curly hair and she can also flat iron your hair to perfection for special occasions. She is my go-to girl for every special occasion and job interview preparation. She is the absolute best in Midtown. I cannot live without her.
Franklin excels at his profession. He truly hears my requests and exceeds expectations each visit. I trust his expertise!
Franklin R. excels at his profession. He truly hears my requests and exceeds my expectations each time I visit. I am so glad that he joined Helmet this year. I trust his expertise and highly recommend other curlies to visit him at the East Atlanta location. Yesterday, Franklin highlighted my curls and added red, which makes me feel super sexy. And since I had a date following my appointment, Franklin dried my hair (I usually choose to airdry) using the pixie method, which created bouncy, chunky curls. He's personable and professional and knows how to handle my 3a/b curls. I am so grateful that I found him!
The time was way past for me to face my fear of having two bad haircuts in a row. The last cut in Feb was the worst of the worst. I was devastated. I went to see Erika to, hopefully, help my long neglected, disasteroulsy cut mess. She was the perfect stylist to see! She looked at my hair in detail and listened very attentively to my hair goals. She gave me a great cut and suggested a glaze to even out the tone. She showed me how to diffuse my hair; a technique that I am happy to have as a tool and don't know that it's right for me to utilize regularly. It was a healing and inspiring experience for me and I plan to return.
I went here after seeing the reviews on this site. I have 3b hair type. I have played it safe for years and just had long layers in my hair so made an appointment to have the bulkiness taking out of my curly hair. I have lived in Atlanta for 6 years and had never looked for a curly hair stylist. This was it and it was everything I wanted. Malaika cut my hair and did a great job. When I looked at the floor I saw LOTS of hair on there. She took an inch off which was needed but left the length. I am very pleased with it. I can totally feel and see the difference. While I was there I asked her about the Keratin Smoothing Treatment. It sounded like a good treatment to try. 10 days after I did this treatment but did it at SalonRed in Atlanta as they had a 50% sale. .OMG I am soooo pleased with it. I now have soft, silky hair. It is more like 3a now and that is what I wanted. I am loving my hair now!!
I have struggled with the curly mess I call my hair since childhood. Being an Arab woman my hair texture is somewhat unique and many stylists are not up to the challenge and lack experience. When I discovered Helmet Salon in Midtown and the genius that resides there, Miss Erika Audrey my life changed forever. She herself having naturally wavy hair and her knowledge and expertise working with us curly haired people she was able to offer me something no one ever has. My first consultation with Erika Audrey was like love at first sight when it comes to hair. I was given the best haircut I have ever received. Allowing for my curls to have bounce and structure she also was able to give me a hairstyle I could wear straight. She deep conditioned my hair after putting elegant highlights that farmed my face. She continued by blowing my curls out straight, again the best I’ve ever had. My hair was soft and flowy and I felt like a movie star. This was all on my first visit. I have been a dedicated client to Miss Erika Audrey for years now. I often joke with Erika that if I ever move out of Atlanta I’m taking her with me. You will feel the same after just one visit with this hair master! Our next endeavor is adding some hair extensions in my hair for highlights! Never a dull moment with Erika. She keeps your hair relationship spicy! Go see her!
I'll start by saying both of these women are amazing. I never had a good haircut before going to Helmet so it's almost unbelievable that they have two stylists with so much talent for curly hair. I've been seeing Erika for over 2 years and LOVE what she does with my hair. She knows what will look good and what won't. She listens really well and gives a great scalp massage! She's so sweet and fun to talk to. However, the other day I tried to make an appointment with her and she was booked until I went on vacation. Instead of waiting, I made an appointment with Malaika. She did an awesome job too! I think from now on I'll alternate between the two just to keep things interesting.
I did not plan to comment on my experience at Helmet, but I have gotten multiple compliments from my co-workers today. I went to Malaika to get my (3c/4a) hair cut because the reviews that I read said she could cut hair in it's naturally curly state. My other stylist, while talented, always straightened (blow dry/flat iron) my hair before cutting and as a result they were not addressing the various types of curls/coils on my head. Some of my curls are very loose and others are very tight. When I sat in the chair I told Malaika my concerns and she did an excellent job. My curls now appear more uniform and the looser curls are blending in with the tighter curls/coils. My only concern was that she did not have products for tighter curls (3c/4a) to style my hair, so I left out of there looking a little crazy. I could tell the cut was good though, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me. She did tell me that I could bring my own products and she would apply them for me. Overall I had a decent experience at Helmet, but do wish they would accommodate all of their clients and have a broader range of products for various hair types. As a stylist Malaika was pleasant and accommodating. She listened to me and then delivered a cut that suited my face and my lifestyle.
Let me start off by saying I love her!I don't agree with the negative reviews at all. I went to Malaika because a good friend of mine had gone to see her based on the reviews on this website and her hair looks the best it's ever looked. Malaika took a lot of time in the beginning to find out about me, my routine, and my hair woes. After we talked she gave me a fabulous shampoo (she really gets in there and massages the scalp which I LOVE!) and did a quick 5 min mask to help put some moisture back into my frazzeled hair. She took her time with the haircut and explained everything she was doing. I ended up with the best haircut I have ever had. She trimmed the length (I'm trying to grow it out),took out all of the bulkiness and then she added shorter layers around the front which really helped open up my face. She was very approachable and pleasant to talk to. I felt like we had been friends for years. She wrote down everything she used on my hair and and gave it to me and she told me that she knows curly hair is different everyday(Amen to that!)and if I had any issues with the cut or problems styling it myself to never hesitate to call her. That made me feel like she really cared abut my happiness as a client and that means a lot to me. I had a great experience and I highly recommend her.
I saw Malaika and she was very nice, easy to talk to, and asked alot of detailed questions about my hair. She even introduced my to a fantastic shampoo for people with seborrhea that doesn't dry out hair. The problem was with the cut. I wanted a trim/touch-up to the length and layers I already had. Somehow, the length on my sides turned out 2 inches shorter than the length in the back. I'm not sure if this is a new curly hair cutting "technique" but it just looked odd on me. From the front, it looked like I had shoulder length hair and from the side it looked noticeably longer (my husband even noticed it). I ended up going back the next day so I could have someone even it out more. Malaika wasn't there, so I saw Jade. At first, Jade acted like he didn't see a problem with my hair and kept trying to fluff it in place to show nothing was wrong (eventhough no one's hair could naturally fall the way he was trying to place it). When washing my hair, he took "scalp-sensitive" to a whole new level by only washing the ends of my hair, not even touching my head with the water or shampoo/conditioner. After he made the adjustments I wanted to the length, he dried my hair for maybe 2 minutes with a diffuser, removed the smock I was wearing, then said "have a nice weekend," leaving my hair one step above soaking wet. At that point, I was so frustrated with the whole experience I just prefered to leave the salon instead of asking to have my hair dried more. I was hoping to have been "wow-ed" by my experience at Helmet like most of the other reviewers on this site, but I will definitely be returning to my old stylist.
Apparently Malaika is a hit or miss. I took recommendations from this site and went to her, but I will not be going back. She did ask me what I wanted, but she took only 20 minutes to do the cut, and it was terrible, nothing like what I had described, and she told me it was because of how my hair is, that there was nothing she could do about it. I came out looking like Bozo the Clown, my mom told me. I got the worst haircut I've ever had. I'm not usually one to go try to rectify bad cuts, as my hair grows quickly, but this was embarrassing. Emily did a little work to fix the mistake and she was very nice and seemed to know what she was doing despite the problems being almost impossible to fix.
I have naturally curly and decided last summer to stop relaxing my hair. I have been wearing a ponytail for the past 4 months, because I have not been able to find anyone to do my hair. After reading about Malaika on this site, I decided to give her a try. She is wonderful! She talks to you to find out how you like to wear your hair. She takes her time and you don't feel rushed. I did not have to wait one minute past my appointment time. She wrote down everything that I should do to my hair. And the products that she used, I simply loved them and was able to purchase them right there at the salon. Need a curly expert? Give Malaika a try. I drove 1.5 hours from Warner Robins and it was definitely worth the trip!!
I moved to Atlanta 3 years ago and searched high and low for someone to cut my 3B/3C hair as well as my previous salon, Ouidad in NYC. I was thrilled to finally find Malaika this year! She is SO talented and has given me 2 cuts that are as good if not better than the high priced NYC salons.I get compliments from total strangers after she cuts my hair. Malaika is the BEST Atlanta has to offer!!!
Malaika gave a great cut for my 3a hair. She asked what I wanted, listened, and delivered. She kept the curls alive. She is on time and easy to work with. She is also professional, she gave good product recommendations, and she is knowledgeable about hair.
I've seen Erika a couple of times. I have no complaints about the cut. However, I can't believe how bad her shampoo technique is, if you can call it that. Every single time she finishes shampooing me, I still have shampoo in my hair and have to ask her to rinse it some more. Even then she only rinses it for 10 seconds. The first time it happened, I wrote it off, but clearly that's the way she is. It's really annoying, and for $50, it seems like a halfway decent shampoo isn't too much to ask. I think I'll try my luck elsewhere.
Based on comments posted here, I tried Malaika and I am so glad I did! I love how she cut and styled my hair. She is very pleasant and professional. She truly listened to what I wanted. I have tried many other stylists in the area (with some drastic and unpleasant results) and know I have one that I will go to on a regular basis. If you have curly hair, go see Malaika. Tell her Lisa sent you.
Thanks to everyone who suggested Erika at Helmet. Erika took the time to cut and style my hair. I have long naturally curly hair, and she gave me the best haircut ever. I appreciate her taking the time to style it and use a diffuser. I have been telling all my curly haired friends about Helmet and Erika.
I love my hair again after seeing Erika. My hair was in horrible shape. I explained my history with my hair and that I wanted something that complimented my face shape. I got the cut I had admired on a couple of other women on TV. Erika listened and she made some suggestions for styling which make my life much easier. I was overloading my hair with styling products trying to tame my hair. Now that I have the right cut, I can embrace my curls and wear them proud. Thanks Erika! I will see her in a couple of months!
I'd been to Helmet once before and had gotten a good curly cut with Erica but she wasn't available so went off the great reviews for Malaika and so happy I did. Malaika really listened to me, suggested a wonderful moisturizing conditioner that worked like a charm on my dry ends and more importantly she listened to what I thought worked best with my hair. What I got was a really great haircut with lots of layers around my face and kept the length in the back. My hair looks healthy, curly, great fit to my face shape and super easy to care for. I'm staying with Malaika!
FANTASTIC! Erika did an awesome job with my hair. The cut is the best I have had for as long as I can remember. I wear my hair down more often and love it! She was very patient with all my thick hair and didn't make me feel like she really didn't have time to dry it(which I have encountered before) I have been to several salons in Atlanta since I moved here and I have finally found the one I will stick with. Thanks Erika!
I have to agree with the not-positive comments about Erika....I saw her twice, based on reviews on this website, after ten years (my blow-drying-straight days) with the same stylist who I didn't think knew how to cut curly hair. Erika didn't give me a bad haircut, really, but she did cut it when it was wet and combed completely straight, which I thought was a curly no-no. She also had some negative things to say about people who didn't use shampoo regularly - I only use shampoo once a week, because of how drying it is. I liked my cut well enough, so I went back about two months later. After she shampoo'd me, she asked if we could try blowing my hair out and going straight. Nuh-uh....the whole reason I went to her was because I'm learning how to cope with my curls!! This second cut was nothing special, so I have gone back to my old stylist for the time being, where I can get a cut that's just as good for about twenty dollars cheaper.
I am in ATL for a class (from MGM) and decided to find a place to get my 3a hair cut. I was able to get an appt with Malaika, and she is WONDERFUL!!!!! Took the time to find out about my hair and routine, offered up some great suggestions, and some great products. I will definitely being making another appt with her the next time I'm in ATL (hopefully a few months from now)! The atmosphere of the salon and other staff are absolutely wonderful, too! Wish I could transplant the whole place to Montgomery!!!!!
I went online and saw all the great reviews for Malaika so I decided to try her out.I have extremly long curly hair and am embarassed to say I had not had a cut in 3 years! My last cut was so bad I was just too afraid to try anyone else. Malaika was so sympathetic to my concerns. I did not want to loose much length but knew my ends were horrible. She compromized with me to make my first visit less tramatic and took off some of dead ends and reshaped my hair so it no longer resembled a carpet. I was so happy with the results and comfortable with her that I went back a month later to get rid of the rest of the bad ends.If you have curly hair that needs serious help go to Malaika she definitly takes your concerns to heart and will give you a cut that includes your input in the process.
Thank you ladies for recommending Erika! After several bad hair days as a result from a bad haircut and humidity, I went to this site and saw all of the lovely comments about Erika. I made an appointment with her and she was wonderful! When I walked in the door, Randy, the owner, introduced himself to me and was very nice. When Erika came and got me she was very comforting and genuine and took her time cutting my hair. My haircut is exactly what I was hoping for and looks great. I am going back to her for my color and I can't wait. I would definitely recommend going to see Erika as she completely exceeded my expectations!
I'm so thankful I discovered naturallycurly.com! After moving to Atlanta, I had no idea where to get a curl-friendly cut. I made the mistake of walking into a mall salon and walked out horrified with the results. I immediately went home and started emergency googling in a desperate attempt to find a salon to repair the damage that had been done. After reading all of the glowing reviews about Erika, I had to check out Helmet for myself. It really is true, she's absolutely fabulous. Not only is she an expert at cutting curly hair, she is so nice and friendly and genuinely listens when you tell her your hair woes. I walked out thrilled with my new cut and wondering where she had been during the last 23 years of my curly haired life! I also loved how she was really knowledgeable about all of the products sold at the salon and made great suggestions of what products would work well with my hair, but never pushed products like alot of other salons I've been to. The receptionists are all very nice too. Janine has curly hair and was really helpful with choosing products while I waited for Erika. Fantastic salon, I won't be going anywhere else!
WOW! Erika made my hair come to life. I have type 3b hair and lots of it. It curled well enough on its own but as she cut, the hair just sprung to life. I've been solely curly just over a year and trying to grow it out after fighting my curls for 40+ years. Erika gave it style. She is wonderful about teaching and showing. People always noticed my curls but now they are mesmerized by them. Thanks Erika - I'll definitely be back.
I made an appointment at this salon based on the reviews here, and I was very dispppointed. When Erika got out the thinning shears, I told myself, "She must know what she's doing." I now know to absolutely refuse to have anyone use them on my hair, no matter how cool the salon or how highly recommended. Six months later, the lower half of my hair is still a frizzy mess. It will not be the same until the all of the thinned part has been cut off. Her styling methods (Aveda Be Curly, diffusing my hair while having me lean over in the chair) left me looking like a poodle. I ran home to restyle. The only good news is that she didn't charge an outrageous amount for the haircut.
I couldn't see Erika one day and Malika was able to fit me in. I think she did a great job and really loved the color she did.
I tried Erika after seeing all her great reviews on this site. I like my curly 3b hair but have trouble with it becoming a triangle when it is long. Erika listened to what I wanted and took the weight off with out cutting it short or thining it too much. I really like what she is doing with it. Sometimes I leave with it curly and sometimes curly all over. Give her a try.
This was my second visit with Erika. First time a haircut (which was wonderful) and this time for highlights. I have graying hair and she was able to make me look like a natural sun-kissed blonde! Whoever wrote the bad review on Erika obviously has a problem. Just look at all the positive comments on the miracles Erika has performed on the curly girls of Atlanta!
I went to see Erika at Helmet in late March. She gave me the best haircut I have ever had in my life! I grow my curls for donating every 3 years. My previous stylist, knowing this, continually made mistakes by cuttting it too short or unevenly. The last haircut left me with a long, curly mullet!! Erika was able to help repair thjis with a sassy, shapely bob that I love! I went back two weeks later to treat myself to highlights and she did an amazing job with that too!
I went to Helmet to get a consultation with Erika or Melika and when they were too busy to look at me hair, I was disappointed. The receptionist suggested Emily and said though she was new she had a lot of experience and was really good. I was skeptical. Then when she was analyzing my sad looking hair it was obvious she did know what she was talking about and told me that her training was with the Ouidad system. She had time to do the cut so I said Ok. It looks amazing and the way she showed me how to do it myself was totally different from what I have ever done. I went from feeling like I had a big fuzz ball on my head to feeling sleek and sophisticated!!
I just got my hair cut at Helmet by Malaika a couple of days ago. It was great! I have 3B sort of hair. I'm biracial, half black, half korean. And well, the last haircut i had did NOTHING for me. Until! Malaika cut my hair and wow! She got my curls defined and beautiful! I'm still getting used to the volume...but other than that it's awesome! She also told me about products to use and whatnot and has a great personality. If you're in Atlanta, go see Malaika at Helmet for your curls!
After reading the wonderful comments about Erika, I knew she was the one to battle my damaged curly locks. Erika and the salon were wonderful. She worked very carefully to condition, cut, style, and instruct me on the proper way to take care of my hair. She said I am now in hair "rehab" and we can get thru this stage of damage. I have found that graying hair becomes more frizzy and brittle added with a previous hairstylist that used the wrong product to high-light my hair. I am starting to feel "healthier" already. Thanks Erika! Debi K.
I went to see Erika based on the positive comments on this website. MISTAKE!!!! I had long curly hair, all one length. I told her I wanted to have shoulder length hair with some pieces cut around my face. I told her I wanted my hair to have curly ringlets. What I wound up with was a chin length haircut with severe layers and she also thinned my hair out. My hair does not curl now. IT IS A MESS! I did speak with the manager there and she offered to have someone else re-cut my hair. I hate my haircut. If you want your hair butchered go see her. She's not that pleasant or professional either.
New to Atlanta I checked out this website to see who would be the best stylist to try out after 12 years with the only woman I trusted with my hair, Ivonne Cascallares of Golden Scissors in Wheaton, IL (of all places!). I decided to go with Kristen James who is famous for her "C" cut for curly hair. She charged $100! The cut was good, she gave me conditioning treatment & decent conversation, but certainly not $100 worth. I decided to try someone else in a more reasonable price range and had heard of Malaika on here, but also got a reference from a friend of the family who used to live here in ATL, now lives in Chicago. So I scheduled the appointment. Malaika was running behind about 30 minutes, which was a bit irritating, but I hung in there. I was a bit thrown off by the straight haired weave or wig she had on and hesitant when I first sat down in her chair. She did a consultation and showed me some samples of what she was thinking - I told her I wanted something more fun/funky - I had 11 in. cut off in June '07 after 15 years of long curly hair - it was growing out to close to shoulder length and I was bored. She gave me a lovely fun cut and conversation that was actually interesting (without prying into my life). I've decided to stick with Malaika and encourage other weary curly haired Latinas to check her out!
I have long wavy/curly hair and I wanted a style that would soften my face because it is very angular. Malaika gave me the greatest cut ever that's softly layred with a sexy side swept bang. I feel like I have cool celebrity hair now and I get tons of compliments, even from men! I loved my experiecnce with Malaika and I want other women with hair like mine to know that there is someone out there that actually knows what they are doing.
I walked in and presented Erika with a stylist's nightmare: A severely overgrown haircut, made worse by me hacking away at it with dull scissors (yes, I know), which made my usually shiny curls morph into a frizzy wild mop-looking thing on top of my head. Erika fixed all that. My hair still needs another trimming session, but it looks 100 times better already. I appreciate the fact that Erika talked me out of cutting off all my hair like I wanted to. She said we'd better work on getting the layers even, THEN we could work on going shorter if I still wanted to. I'm glad she did that. After discussing what the action plan was, she got to work. She evened out my hair, styled it, and showed me a few tricks for styling it on my own. She didn't assume I wanted to straighten my hair, which is a first, and she did a good job of styling it curly , which is also a first. Usually when I go to a salon I have to run home and re-style it because it looks like a bad 80s perm. Erika knows how to deal with curly hair. The salon is very nice too... it's actually an old house and has tons of charm. There is convenient parking too. I will definitely be going back.
Erika was awesome! She gave me the first good haircut I've ever had. She used Aveda Be Curly products on my hair which I love! My hair looks awesome. I'm so happy I can't stop smiling. :D
Malaika is wonderful! I was reffered to Malaika by a curly-haired friend who found her on the naturally curly website. I never even knew this website existed, but i'm glad I found out. I have shoulder length hair (when curly) and I do very little styling . Malaika consulted with me throughly to find out my lifestlye to ensure that she gave me a cut I could keep up with. My curls were transformed! I always felt I had a frizzy mop for hair but now I have beautiful ringlets that require just a little dab of product and a diffuser. I am so thankful I found Malaika and that she helped me to understand and appreciate my beautiful curly hair, so go see her so she can do the same for you!
Another great review for Erika! I went to see her based on reviews here & was not disappointed. My hair hadn't been cut or highlighted in a YEAR thanks to a really bad experience with another stylist. Erika didn't hesitate to take me on & the results are incredible. My hair actually curls like crazy with less frizz & the color looks great. I'm still getting used to the diffuser, but it has made a tremendous difference in how my hair looks. The salon is cool, no attitude like that found in some other Atlanta salons! Erika was very comfortable to talk with & really knows her stuff. Give her a call - you won't regret it!!
I Went to Helmut Hair Works and had Erika cut my hair she had me go for a much shorter style than Im used to but it is curly and cute. It has movement and she really understood how to cut my hair . I had found Erika from the other reveiws on Naturally curly and Ims so glad I went . I felt very comfortable there and Erika really seems to know hair . I will definatly go back. The hair cut was more than Im used to spending but it was worth every penny to have a hair cut I love rather than hate.
I highly recommend Erika. I’d been going to the same stylist in Birmingham for years, and continued to go back to him even after moving to Atlanta in 2006. When I couldn’t get an appointment with him for over three weeks, I finally decided it was time to take the plunge and find a stylist in Atlanta. I read tons of reviews on this site, and had always been a little curious about the salon as I’d driven past it many times when I lived in Midtown, so I thought I’d give Erika a try. She did a fantastic job on my cut and brow wax. My curls are actually blended and seamless now rather than looking like steps! She gave me, hands down, the best cut I’ve had in YEARS. By the way, the best curl product I’ve found is Bumble and Bumble Curl Conscious. I towel dry and pick out my hair. Then I apply a bit of Frizz Ease and a bit of Curl Conscious, and then let it air dry. My curls come out fairly frizz-free for Atlanta in the summertime. My former stylist started me on it, and HELMET recently started carrying it. I’d recommend picking up a sample size while you’re there and give it a try!
Erika has received alot of fabulous comment's on this site so I decided to go to her for cut and color. I am so happy that I did! She has the most amazing curly hair herself and it automatically made me comfortable with her. She gave me a very cutting edge haircut that I can wear straight or curly and the color is incredible. If you have had problems finding a stylist who knows curly hair I highly reccomend Erika!
I've never written a comment before but I have to mention how great ERIKA at the Midtown Helmet is. I went to her yesterday after reading the comments on this site and she gave me my first ever good haircut. I was extremely pleased. Usually, I have to wear my longish hair up because it's frizzy and it's always been cut unevenly by stylists who don't know how to deal with hair that curls up as they're cutting it. Erika cleaned me up and gave me a super cute shorter style that I've always wanted that not only frames my face correctly but is not frizzy or uneven. She was also very accomodating of my low maintenance style despite her hipness. I am incredibly pleased to have found somebody who can cut curls. Thanks everyone for your guidance!
Malaika cut my long curly locks into a wonderfully shaped bob haircut. I told her what I wanted it to look like, and she created exactly what I had in mind. I'm so pleased with Malaika and this salon and am looking forward to my next appointment!
I have seen Erika a few times already for cut and color, and always have loved her work. On my last visit though, she asked me if I had ever tried diffusing my hair. I didn't even know what a diffuser was! She assured me it would look great and give me some versatility with my style so I let her try it. My goodness!! I had NO idea how much curl was in my hair. I am so thankful that Erica was able to see the potential in my hair, and to give me a cut to work with it. I love my new found curls!
After reading a great review about Malaika on this website, I decided to schedule a haircut appointment with her to coincide with a trip to Atlanta, because my (formerly) regular hairstylist in New Orleans has been MIA since Katrina (Kesi Redd where are you?), which is about how long its been since my last good haircut. I have medium length 3C hair that was over-highlighted within an inch of its life by a stylist in DC, and I’d been growing it out with periodic “maintenance” cuts to get rid of the colored ends but needed a “real” cut I could wear either straight or curly, depending on how conservative the situation or event was. When I walked into the salon and saw that Malaika had the most perfectly cut and styled head of shoulder length 3C hair, I knew I was in the right place. After we chatted about what I wanted and needed my hair to do, Malaika washed, blow dried and flat ironed my hair so she could make sure my cut worked when my hair was straight. Needless to say the cut was fabulous and my hair stayed straight for the entire weekend I was in ATL—which had never happened before. However, the big test was when I did the wet down and wash and put some gel in my hair to wear it naturally. And it STILL looked fabulous enough for me to get numerous compliments while wearing it curly to a political fundraiser. Unfortunately, now I’ll have to find reasons to regularly visit ATL to get a haircut. BTW, Malaika is quick, so I didn’t have to spend half a day getting a haircut.
I am now a reformed flat iron junkie! I have battling my curls for years and finally have been shown a way to work WITH them instead of AGAINST. I'm extatic over my new hair! Go to Erika NOW....she is a godsend!
I went to Helmet on whim because I live in Midtown, and I pass it almost every day. The salon is very warm and inviting and I encountered none of that snooty stuff you often get at high-end salons. I asked for a stylist that was good with curly hair and they set me up with Malaika. I was immediately at ease when I saw her because she has curly hair as well and could sympathize with my issues. Malaika gave me a great cut that supported my natural curl and got rid of that horrible Bozo the clown triangle thingy that all curly haired women are plauged with. She then explained the proper produts to use for my hair type and demonstrated the correct way to diffuse my hair. I never knew my hair could get as curly as it did and it looked awesome! If you have curly hair you can't handle go see Malaika, you won't regret it.
I heard about Erika from the reviews on this site and decided to give her a shot. The salon is beautiful and unique and Erika gave me the best haircut I have ever gotten. She walked me through the styling process and tought me how to diffuse my hair and use the proper products. My cut and color are so amazing and anyone reading this should check her out. Hope this helps!
I have been bouncing around from stylist to stylist for years hoping to find someone who could cut my curly hair properly. I finally ended up with Erika at Helmet and I could not be happier. She has curly hair herself so she knows first hand what works and what doesn't. I have never been happier with my hair and I would recommend her to anyone I meet!
I have had such a hard time finding a hairstylist who understands how to cut and color curly hair properly...until now! A friend told me about Erika at Helmet salon in Midtown. She has very curly hair herself which put me at ease because she knows first hand what curly hair needs. I was amazed at what a difference a few tweaks here and there made with my cut and color. My hair has never looked so good! I HIGHLY reccomend her to any of you out there who are going through the same thing I was. Hope this helped!
Tori does a great job with color and cut and believe me, I have tried a lot of salons. I have received so many compliments on my hair since I have been going to her. I get highlights and lowlights. I used to go to Siggers and they did a great job but my stylist left and Hairworx atmosphere suits me better...a little more funky, warmer, more relaxed and not so many prom girls.
